Carlos Alcaraz is closing in on Andy Murray in terms of career earnings thanks to his win at the French Open.
The Spanish prodigy triumphed over current world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the final at Roland Garros on Sunday, outplaying the Italian in a five-set match and subsequent tie-break to successfully defend his title.
Consequently, it's reported that Alcaraz pocketed a substantial prize of around £2.1million, moving up to seventh place on the list of tennis players with the highest career earnings.
With his 20 career titles on the ATP Tour and five Grand Slams, Alcaraz's total prize money is estimated to be £33m. His win at the French Open also saw him overtake Pete Sampras, who reportedly earned just under £32m before retiring in 2002.
According to the official ATP site, Alzaraz has raked in a total of £5m this year alone, boasting four titles and a record of 37 wins and five losses. His most lucrative season so far was in 2023 when he ended the year with a total of £11.2m in earnings.
That same year, Alcaraz clinched his first Grand Slam at Wimbledon by defeating Novak Djokovic. However, if Alcaraz aims to surpass Djokovic's best single-season earnings this year, he still has a tough task ahead.
The Serbian legend, holder of a record 24 Grand Slams, reportedly earned £15.6m in 2015. Unsurprisingly, the 38-year-old tops the list of the highest earners in tennis history, boasting a staggering £138.8m in prize money.
With Djokovic still in top form, it seems likely he will continue to add to this. Alcaraz aims to increase his fortunes when he returns to Wimbledon this summer, hoping for a third consecutive victory in London.
While the exact prize money for winning the Grand Slam is currently unknown, Alcaraz reportedly pocketed £2.7m at last year's event. Also ahead of him on the tennis wealth ladder in terms of career earnings are second-place Rafael Nadal (£99.7m), Roger Federer in third (£96.5m).
Murray, meanwhile, sits in fourth with total earnings of £47.8m, thanks to an illustrious career that saw him clinch 46 career titles and three Grand Slams - lifting the title at Wimbledon twice as well as the US Open.
Alexander Zverev is fifth in the standings (£39.5m) and Daniil Medvedev is sixth (£34.2m). At just 22, Alcaraz has ample time to catch up with the 'Big Four'. Sinner, too, has potential, currently trailing Sampras with his £30.7m earnings but leading Stan Wawrinka, who completes the current top 10 with £27.8m.

F1 has a growing problem as serving FIA steward brands driver 'a disaster'
In a period when routinely, on social media, accusations of bias in Formula 1 are slung around with abandon, the FIA really isn't helping itself. On the face of it, the appointment of Derek Warwick as one of the stewards on duty at this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix is a normal, entirely uninteresting decision. He's more than qualified for the role. Warwick is a veteran of 147 F1 race starts from his own racing career and has been a regular driver steward for many years now. Aged 70, the Brit is one of the most respected people in the F1 paddock whenever he pays a visit. But something has changed in recent times which should raise questions over whether he remains a viable candidate for a stewarding role – his latest media work. Specifically, Warwick is involved with a PR company which supplies quotes from famous names with credit to various gambling companies. One such set of quotes, attributed to Warwick, was sent around this week. In it, he opined that Lando Norris needs to stop making "silly mistakes" if he is to beat Oscar Piastri to the title, claimed Lance Stroll is a better driver than people give him credit for and said Yuki Tsunoda has "had a disaster" since joining the main Red Bull team. In another email, sent earlier this week, quotes attributed to Warwick said Max Verstappen was "absolutely wrong" to drive into George Russell at the Spanish Grand Prix and that people are "probably right" to suggest that the Dutchman should have been suspended for his actions. Of course, he is entitled to all of those opinions as a person and many will agree with him on some of those topics. But should he be sharing them in public, given he has the power in his hands when on duty as an FIA steward to hand out punishments to drivers for their actions on track – penalties that could be called into doubt based on his personal views? Well, based on the FIA's own example, he shouldn't. While Warwick remains an active F1 steward, having last served at the Miami Grand Prix in May and been selected for this weekend's event in Montreal, Johnny Herbert was cut from the governing body's pool in January. Explaining that decision at the time, the FIA said Herbert is "is widely respected and brought invaluable experience and expertise to his role... [but] his duties as an FIA steward and that of a media pundit were incompatible". Warwick too is widely respected and vastly experienced, but why is he allowed to continue to work in the role? Formula 1 fans can watch every practice, qualifying and race live with Sky's new Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle in a new deal that saves £192. As well as Sky Sports access, this includes more than 100 TV channels and free subscriptions to Netflix and Discovery+. To be clear, there is no reason whatsoever to suggest that Warwick or any active FIA steward would allow their personal opinions to affect their decision making. But the problem is that some people WILL make that accusation and, when an active steward is out there publicly criticising drivers, it's not a good look. Verstappen is one penalty point away from a race ban heading into this weekend's Montreal race. If Warwick is on the stewarding panel which hands him the punishment which triggers that ban, you can easily imagine what the reaction will be from fans of the Dutchman and of Red Bull – perhaps even the driver and team themselves. And it will be a problem for the FIA entirely of its own making.

National Biography adds John Dawes and Michael Peckham
The Gwent pair are among 238 people added to the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography after they died in 2021. Dawes is the only man to have led the British and Irish Lions to a series victory in New Zealand after being skipper on the 1971 tour. The Abercarn-born centre won 22 caps for Wales after his debut in 1964 and was captain for the Grand Slam triumph in 1971 before heading off to face the All Blacks. Dawes became national coach and won the Five Nations title four times, two of them Grand Slams, and won four triple crowns. He coached the Lions in New Zealand in 1977. He played for Newbridge and went on to become a London Welsh captain and coach. Panteg-born Peckham was the son of a railway locomotive fireman and won a scholarship from Monmouth Grammar School to Cambridge. That started a career as a distinguished oncologist whose multidisciplinary treatment programmes improved survival rates and led to the wider acceptance of holistic care models for cancer patients. A strong believer in the application of evidence-based medicine, he was the first NHS director of research and development. The Oxford DNB is a national record of people who have shaped British history. From June 2025, the dictionary includes biographies of more than 63,000 individuals, written by more than 14,000 contributors, and with more than 12,000 portrait images. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, is included in the new edition with Queen Elizabeth II's entry to be published next year. Other prominent figures added include politicians Shirley Williams, Austin Mitchell and Sir David Amess, entrepreneurs Sir Clive Sinclair and Sir David Barclay, Nobel prize-winner Antony Hewish, actors Sir Antony Sher and Helen McCrory, footballers Jimmy Greaves and Ian St John, journalist Katharine Whitehorn, broadcaster Janice Long, anti-deportation activist Anwar Ditta and charity fundraiser Captain Sir Tom Moore.
