Royal Ascot: Progressive American Affair dashes to King Charles III glory
Scottish challenger American Affair finished best to land the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot for Jim Goldie and Paul Mulrennan.
Successful in valuable handicaps at Musselburgh and York, the five-year-old was perhaps unfortunate not to finish closer than he did when fifth in the Temple Stakes at Haydock and was an 11-1 chance for this Group One debut.
Settled in midfield as the likes of Regional and Night Raider blazed a trail, American Affair was produced with his challenge inside the final two furlongs and found plenty for pressure to get the better of a protracted duel with Frost At Dawn by a neck.

Lanarkshire-based Goldie said: "I've trained the family for two generations, so it's very sweet.
"He's just getting faster, we went seven furlongs at Wetherby in his maiden, we've learnt to run him over the right trip, we took him back to five and he's just getting better and better.
"I was quite confident he could do it today, he had the talent, we got it wrong at Haydock. I knew he was probably one of the fastest horses in the race, but it's how you control that. We've come down a day early and got him relaxed and it all fell into place. It means a lot.
"You're never sure, but I could see he was travelling well. He's just getting faster and faster, we trained his family and they were the same – they just got quicker.
"We brought him here yesterday to settle him in and it's all worked out perfectly. It's just terrific.
"Paul really believed in this horse and we knew he had it in him. It's magical, he's a very good horse.
"We're living the dream, so to speak. To win here is probably a career highlight. Well, it's not 'probably', is it? It's definitely a career highlight."
Mulrennan added: "I was just saying there, at this stage of my career I've probably got more years behind me than I have in front of me, it's extra special.
"It's hard enough to get rides here, it's nice to come down here and have a ride, to win a Group One here is very special and Jim's been very good to me the last few years.
"He's a master trainer at tweaking around with these horses and he can really, with the ammunition he has, he can get the best out of them on the big day."

Cork community rallies to save world's first pitch and putt course in Fountainstown
A Cork community is fundraising to save the world's first competitive pitch and putt venue in the seaside village of Fountainstown. Established in 1936, the pitch and putt club — now a piece of Irish sporting history — was founded by WA Collins, the inventor of the game. A miniature version of golf, pitch and putt needs a relatively small area of land for a course, and became a way to bring communities together through sport. WA Collins, who managed the National Bank in Cork, suggested the first pitch and putt course in Fountainstown, Co Cork, in the 1930s. That first course was constructed in the seaside resort and its popularity quickly inspired other courses across Ireland, and later internationally. The Irish Amateur Pitch and Putt Union was then founded under the presidency of WA Collins, with its headquarters in Cork. WA Collins, founder of Fountainstown pitch and putt club. 'WA Collins, also known as Collie, was married to a Scottish woman, and her father, Pickman, had once played a role in planning the course at Portmarnock Golf Club. Golf ran in the family, and Collie himself wasn't just a player; he had a real passion for the game. "He was inspired to create a sports club in Fountainstown, complete with a pitch and putt course, tennis courts, croquet and more," campaign organisers wrote on GoFundMe. Jimmy Fitzgerald, who lived in the first cottage ever built in Crosshaven, was part of the original crew that built the pitch and putt course in 1936. His granddaughter, Aoife Fitzgerald, is now one of the people campaigning for a revamped pitch. 'We must fully appreciate the work produced by Mr Collins and his crew back in the 1930s,' organisers say. Fountainstown is proud to be credited with the start of the game, to have played its part in this global sport, to have faced the challenges which the development of any competitive sport can entail. 'What they had 89 years ago was raw enthusiasm, gumption, an ideal and a dream. Today, we would like to continue that dream and breathe new life into this community gem.' One of the world's star ballerinas, who had family roots in neighbouring Crosshaven, visited the club in 1939. Alicia Markova, formerly Lilian Alice Marks, was one of the greatest classical ballerinas of the 20th century and was involved in founding the English National Ballet. But the nine-hole community course based in Fountainstown Sports Club is now 'tired', club members say, and needs to be restored so it can be passed on intact to future generations. Donations are to fund restoring and improving the greens; enhancing course accessibility and playability; and "preserving the beauty and history of this unique and historic Cork gem," organisers say. Cercene could be supplemented for next month's Juddmonte Irish Oaks following her surprise Coronation Stakes success at Royal Ascot. Third behind Lake Victoria in the Irish 1,000 Guineas, the daughter of Australia took her game to another level on the penultimate day of the Royal meeting, finishing powerfully under Gary Carroll to get the better of French Guineas heroine Zarigana as a 33-1 shot. While the result was a shock to many, trainer Joe Murphy expected a bold showing. He said: "If you go back and look at the Irish Guineas, she was the only filly that passed three horses over the last furlong. If they went another furlong, I'm not saying we'd beat the Ballydoyle filly (Lake Victoria), but we could have been second and there's no harm being second best to her. "I'm delighted with the way she came home, she licked the pot and we're thrilled with her." With Cercene yet to race beyond a mile, Murphy admits to having doubts about whether her stamina will stand up to the mile and a half of the Irish Oaks, but feels it could be worth rolling the dice. "We have our Group One in the bag now and she's finished third in a Group One and second in the Athasi Stakes from seven runs, so we're in a very happy place," he added. "We're thinking of supplementing her for the Irish Oaks. We'll probably make an entry for the Nassau in Goodwood as well, but we have to figure out the timing. "The Pretty Polly this weekend comes too soon after Ascot. You could go over a mile and a quarter in the Nassau, but you're taking on older fillies, whereas in the Oaks you're only taking on your own age group. "She has her Group One, so if she doesn't stay I'll take the blame and we'll go back (in trip) and start the engine again." The Fethard, Co Tipperary-based trainer also has big plans for the second half of the season, with a trip to California in early November very much on the agenda. Murphy said: "We have have the Matron Stakes (at Leopardstown) and then probably the Breeders' Cup, so that's the programme going along. We're looking forward to the Breeders' Cup as we think she'll handle it - she's very well balanced and tough and honest. "The dream is more alive than it was before Ascot."
