MoU inked to rehabilitate ex-servicemen

Guwahati: An MoU was signed between Assam Skill University and Directorate of Sainik Welfare in Guwahati on Thursday to prepare ex-servicemen for opportunities in other sectors, including reserved govt jobs and PSUs.
The programme also emphasises the rehabilitation of ex-servicemen, many of whom retire young, with 15 to 20 years of active work life still ahead of them.
A key aspect of the initiative is its focus on supporting widows and dependents of ex-servicemen. The partnership will guide them towards meaningful and sustainable career paths, ensuring their economic independence and integration into the workforce.
The MoU was signed at the Assam Skill University in Mangaldai by vice-chancellor of the university Subhash Das and Brigadier(Retd) Polash Choudhury , director of the Directorate of Sainik Welfare.
Speaking at the event, vice-chancellor Subhash Das emphasised the importance of leveraging the unique skills of ex-servicemen to meet the demands of today's workforce. "Our veterans bring an unparalleled combination of leadership, discipline and adaptability that modern industries need," Das said.
Brigadier Choudhury expressed his gratitude for the partnership and highlighted its potential to transform the lives of veterans and their families.

"Courses under this initiative will commence from within the next two months, which will include one-year diploma and three-month certificate courses," Brig Choudhury added.
To ensure seamless implementation and success of this initiative, Colonel (Retd) PN Giri, Zila Sainik welfare officer of Darrang district, and Jagadish Nath, deputy registrar of Assam Skill University, have been appointed as the Single Points of Contact.
Col Giri explained, "As I was appointed as SPOC, it is my responsibility to act as a medium between ex-servicemen and the university. I will facilitate the enrolments of those who are interested in the skill development courses provided by the university."
This MoU marks a crucial step in the ongoing efforts to integrate ex-servicemen and their dependents into mainstream economic activities, contributing to nation-building and the socio-economic development of the region, reiterated Giri.The university will offer courses in several domains comprising security & supervisory roles, housekeeping & facility management, construction & infrastructure, machinery operations and telecommunications & IT, etc.

Equipping youth with practical skills essential for building self-reliant, capable India: Governor
Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot on Saturday inaugurated the Indian Institute of Future Skills at the Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) in Mysuru. In his inaugural address, Mr. Gehlot said that equipping youth with practical skills is essential for building a self-reliant and capable India. He said that skill-based education is a powerful catalyst for the social and economic empowerment of rural, underprivileged, and marginalised communities. 'Only when every youth is equipped with both knowledge and practical skills can the vision of a 'Skilled and Capable India' be realised,' he said. The Governor noted that various government initiatives—both at the Centre and in States—are helping India move towards becoming the 'Skill Capital of the World' and highlighted flagship schemes such as the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, National Skill Development Mission, National Apprenticeship Promotion Scheme, and the Skill India Mission. These schemes were instrumental in enhancing youth employability and meeting industry demands. 'India has a demographic advantage with around 65% of the population under the age of 35. By providing this youth population with proper training and guidance, India can achieve economic, social, and technological strength on the global stage,' he remarked. Mr. Gehlot stressed the growing importance of emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, data science, cybersecurity, and digital marketing, describing them as vital areas that are transforming economies and creating new avenues for employment and innovation. Praising the collaboration behind the launch of the new skill centre, the Governor lauded the joint efforts of KSOU, the National Skill Development Corporation, Skill India, and the Ethnotech Group in establishing the Indian Institute of Future Skills at KSOU. He also commended KSOU for its NAAC A+ accreditation. Sharing a personal anecdote, the Governor recalled his early days working at the Birla company in Madhya Pradesh, where he took on multiple roles despite being appointed as a supervisor. 'Doing every kind of job helps one build comprehensive skills,' he said. Nirmalanandanatha Swami of Sri Adichunchanagiri Math, Prakashanath Swami, managing director of SJB and BGS Group of Institutions and Hospitals, Sharanappa V.
