SEC Quarterback Rankings for the 2025 season

SEC Quarterback Rankings for the 2025 season

USA Today7 hours ago

The SEC is breaking in a number of new quarterbacks in the conference this year, but several players have a chance to be in the Heisman Trophy conversation as the season goes along. It's the most important position on the field, and much of how the SEC season will go will depend on which quarterbacks shine during the season.
There are only five schools that have the same week one starter that they did in 2024. Garrett Nussmeier, LaNorris Sellers, Taylen Green, Diego Pavia, and Blake Shapen are the only quarterbacks projected to start week one, two years in a row. But teams like Florida and Texas A&M found their starters midway through the 2024 season with D.J. Lagway and Marcel Reed.
Five teams will be rolling with transfer portal quarterbacks as their starters in 2025, and three schools have starters who have sat and waited for a couple of years: Arch Manning, Gunner Stockton, and Ty Simpson.
We're a couple of months away from the start of the season but fall camp will be here before we know it. Here's how we're stacking up the SEC quarterbacks ahead of 2025 training camp.
16. Zach Calzada, Kentucky
Zach Calzada is making his third swim through the SEC after stints with Texas A&M and Auburn. He had a breakout year for Incarnate Word. Can he help resurrect a Kentucky passing offense that struggled with Brock Vandagriff at QB last year?
15. Gunner Stockton, Georgia
Gunner Stockton helped Georgia win the SEC title after taking over for the injured Carson Beck but struggled against a good Notre Dame defense. He's likely to surpass this ranking, but there's a lot to prove for the Georgia quarterback.
14. Blake Shapen, Mississippi State
Blake Shapen has a ton of experience but that can only get you so far. We've seen some good from him dating back to his time at Baylor but in his only SEC game last year, he completed just 61% of his passes for 140 yards and a touchdown in a 17-point loss to Florida early in the season.
13. Austin Simmons, Ole Miss
Austin Simmons has big-time potential in Lane Kiffin's offense. He's one of a number of first-year starters in the SEC this season, and his dual-threat ability will give him the opportunity to shine.
12. Ty Simpson, Alabama
Next to Garrett Nussmeier is one of the more experienced quarterbacks in the SEC, he just hasn't thrown a ton of passes. He's appeared in 16 games and thrown just 50 passes. However, he's a former five-star prospect, and in a Kalen DeBoer-Ryan Grubb system, he should have a chance to shine.
11. Beau Pribula, Missouri
Beau Pribula, coming over from Penn State, may be last on this list, but he has the potential to finish in the top half of the league at quarterback. He's a dual-threat quarterback and has scored 19 touchdowns in his career. He may not have as much passing experience but he's an underrated talent in the conference.
10. Jackson Arnold, Auburn
What happened at Oklahoma last year wasn't entirely Jackson Arnold's fault. He has to own the turnovers but OU's lack of offensive production as a whole had more to do with injuries along the offensive line and at wide receiver. It wasn't an environment conducive to development for a first-year starter.
9. Joey Aguilar, Tennessee
Joey Aguilar may be making the jump from App State to Tennessee but he's got the tools to thrive in Josh Heupel's offense. He had two seasons with the Mountaineers with more than 3,000 yards passing and 56 touchdowns. That experience will matter for something in 2025.
8. Marcel Reed, Texas A&M
Marcel Reed took over for Connor Weigman last year and showed off his athleticism with an impressive performance against LSU. He was good in a loss to Auburn but struggled against Texas. If he can continue to develop, he'll have the Aggies in contention.
7. Diego Pavia, Vanderbilt
Diego Pavia revived the Vanderbilt Commodores with a great year one in the SEC. Wins over Alabama and Auburn, playing Texas to one score, Pavia elevated Vandy and has them in a better direction heading into 2025. Pavia combined for 3,000 total yards and 28 total touchdowns last year.
6. Arch Manning, Texas
Arch Manning has big-time potential, but he hasn't played enough to rank higher on this list. The tools are there to be the No. 1 quarterback in the SEC by the end of the season, but let's see how he fares as a full-time starter before propelling him to No. 1.
5. Taylen Green, Arkansas
Taylen Green helped Arkansas to a big win over Tennessee last year and had Oklahoma State on the ropes before the Razorback defense let the Cowboys back into it. Green threw for 3,158 yards and 15 passing touchdowns and eight rushing touchdowns in 2025. In year two with Bobby Petrino, Green should be even better.
4. D.J. Lagway, Florida
D.J. Lagway helped Florida have a strong end to the season with four wins in a row over LSU, Ole Miss, Florida State, and Tulane. He'll need to cut down on the interceptions against one of the toughest schedules in the nation.
3. John Mateer, Oklahoma
Sure, he's got to make the jump to the SEC, but Diego Pavia made the jump from the FCS and Taylen Green did so from Boise State and had a lot of success. Why won't Mateer be good? He had a combined 44 total touchdowns last year and 4,000 total yards. He's a dynamic player that's about to take the SEC by storm.
2. LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina
He may not start as No. 1 right now, but LaNorris Sellers has the potential to be the very best in the nation in 2025. In his first season as a starter, Sellers threw for 2,534 yards and 18 touchdowns. He also ran 674 yards and another seven touchdowns to lead the Gamecocks to a 9-3 season.
1. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU
Garrett Nussmeier is one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the country returning for 2025, and he threw for more than 4,000 yards last year. He's one of the favorites to win the Heisman Trophy in 2025, and why LSU will be in the conference title hunt.

Buccaneers Announce 'Creamsicle' Game for 2025

Buccaneers Announce 'Creamsicle' Game for 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Like it or not, and there are many who don't, Bucco Bruce is returning in 2025. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced on Tuesday that they'll bring back the Creamsicle uniforms in the Week 15 matchup next season against the division rival Atlanta Falcons at Raymond James Stadium. Advertisement The team last wore the Bucco Bruce helmet and Creamsicle jerseys against the Falcons last season in a 31-26 defeat. Some fans consider the uniforms to be bad luck, most associated with the early days of the franchise that saw little success. Tampa Bay wore the colors from the franchise's inception in 1976 through the 1996 season, then first wore them as an alternate look in 2009. From 1976-1996, the team posted a 100-223-1 record and just three winning seasons before making the switch to "Pewter Power" for the 1997 season. In 1979, Tampa Bay went 10-6 en route to a 9-0 NFC Championship game loss to the Los Angeles Rams. In 1981, they went 9-7 and lost 38-0 to the Dallas Cowboys in the Divisional Round, and then 5-4 in the strike-shortened season of 1982 before they lost to Dallas 30-17 in the Wild Card round. Advertisement That's it. Three. Three winning seasons while wearing Bucco Bruce and the Creamsicles, and no winning season or postseason appearances from 1982 until 1997 after the team changed looks. It's no wonder fans and some media believe the bad luck takes, as the evidence is almost overwhelming. Buccaneers insider, JP Peterson of the JP Peterson Show on Fan Stream Sports - Tampa Bay is one that believes in the bad luck, and questions why those colors keep coming back. 'Why are the Bucs still playing in these uniforms? They are gorgeous to wear to bars, but the Bucs are 1-6 in the Creamsicle throwback games and went 0-26 to start the franchise and then 14 straight years without making the playoffs," Peterson said. "And as soon as they switched to the 'Pewter and Red', we went to the playoffs four of the next six years! You can't win in Creamsicles, and this is a key divisional game! This is not an opinion, it's a demonstrable fact!" Advertisement Tampa Bay's in-game sideline reporter, T.J. Rives, has a different view of the Creamsicles. "As someone who grew up watching the Bucs as a teenager in the 1980s in the orange, I always love the nostalgia of them putting it back on," Rives told us. Bucs Make Major on Date For 'Creamsicle' Uniform Return

Few NFL teams tout as popular of a throwback uniform set as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Known by the famous "creamsicle" nickname, the uniforms are popular among both new fans who are not familiar with the kit and those in the older group who admire the nostalgia that they bring. Advertisement Following a hiatus lasting over a decade, the Bucs brought them back for the 2023 season and they made a second straight appearance in 2024. The upcoming season will make it three years in a row following Tuesday's announcement. Tampa Bay announced a series of celebrations for each of their 10 home games, including the preseason, commemorating the team's 50th season. The Bucs' Week 15 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons will mark the official return of the "creamsicle" uniforms. The team returned their throwbacks against the Falcons last year as well, ending in a 31-26 defeat in Week 8. In fact, the Bucs' success in these uniforms has been minimal since retiring them as their official kit in 1996. Advertisement Tampa Bay lost in their first contest after the most recent absence in 2023 and have lost five of their last six including the four-year span from 2009 to 2012 when they made their initial return. The Bucs hope for better luck this time around not only based on the jerseys but the opponent as well. Tampa Bay lost to the Falcons in both matchups last season and they project as their strongest rival in the NFC South once again. They managed to hold onto the South for the fourth straight season but a similar pattern in 2025 could be detrimental in their quest for their fifth straight division title. Baker Mayfield's 'Adaptability' Key To Buccaneers Success

Baker Mayfield's 'Adaptability' Key To Buccaneers Success originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has enjoyed a career resurgence over the past two seasons, and he's done it with two different offensive coordinators. Advertisement First, it was Dave Canales who left for the Carolina Panthers' head coaching role, followed by Liam Coen, who is now the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars. Now, Mayfield, in his third season with Tampa Bay, will have his third offensive coordinator in Josh this is a little different. It won't be a complete change for Baker, with Grizzard serving as passing game coordinator for Coen. So, things for the most part will stay the same, aside from the new wrinkles that Girzzard wants to incorporate into his offense. For Fox Sports' Ben Arthur, adaptability is key for Mayfield in 2025. Advertisement "Baker Mayfield will have his third offensive coordinator in three years with the Bucs this season in Josh Grizzard, who was Tampa's pass game coordinator in 2024," Arthur wrote. "The challenge will be to maintain the explosive offense the team featured with Liam Coen as OC last season." Nov 10, 2024; Tampa, Florida, USA; Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield (6) is pressured by San Francisco 49ers defensive end Leonard Floyd (56) in the fourth quarter at Raymond James Stadium.© Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images If the last two seasons have shown us anything, it is that Mayfield can handle the change in coordinator. Except this time, it won't be completely new for him. So the grace period for Mayfield won't be what it was in previous years, and that should allow the offense to hit the ground running in 2025. Mayfield has an abundance of weapons at his disposal, with the Buccaneers now seen as genuine NFC contenders. Advertisement However, that comes with a big "if," and that is Mayfield can continue his resurgance with another coordinator. Baker has shown he can adapt to the offensive changes, and while this latest one isn't as big as his previous two, things will be a little different. But that hasn't stopped him from winning the division and a playoff game, and we don't think it will stop him from leading the Buccaneers to another postseason run.
