German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said Monday that Israel's "current level of attacks on Gaza can no longer be justified by the fight against Hamas."
"Harming the civilian population to such an extent, as has increasingly been the case in recent days, can no longer be justified as a fight against Hamas terrorism," he told German public broadcaster WDR in a televised interview.
He added he planned to hold a call with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week to tell him "to not overdo it," though for "historical reasons," Germany would always be more guarded in its criticism than some European partners.
"But if lines are crossed, where international humanitarian law is really being violated, then Germany, the German chancellor, must also say something about it," Merz said.
Merz's comments came before hetravels to Finland later today. His comments followed an Israeli strike on a shelter in northern Gaza strip early Monday morning that killed dozens of people.

US updates: National Guard reaches Los Angeles after unrest – DW – 06/09/2025
06/09/2025 June 9, 2025 LA mayor says Trump 'provoked' unrest Mayor Bass echoed calls by California's governor for Trump to rescind the order to deploy the National Guard to LA Image: Eric Thayer/AP/dpa/picture alliance Los Angeles mayor Karen Bass has urged protesters to remain peaceful and not "play into [the US President Donald Trump] administration's hands" as she blamed the White House for escalating tensions in the city. Los Angeles police fired stun grenades and tear gas to disperse crowds of protesters who had gathered on a freeway in downtown LA. LAPD confirmed that "a number of people have been arrested" as thousands of protesters continued to demonstrate in the center of the country's second largest city. The unrest began after dozens of people were arrested in multiple raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) federal agents on Friday. Speaking to reporters, mayor Bass said the scenes unfolding in LA were "chaos that is provoked by the [Trump] administration." The White House has deployed the National Guard and threatened to send in Marines if the unrest continues. "When you raid Home Depot and workplaces, when you tear parents and children apart, and when you run armored caravans through our streets, you cause fear and you cause panic, and deploying federalized troops is a dangerous escalation," Bass said. While she appeared to blame the White House for escalating tensions, she said Los Angeles residents had the right to protest "peacefully" but not "to be violent, to create chaos or vandalize property." "I call on all Angelenos to continue expressing your right, your anger, your outrage, but to do it peacefully," Bass said.

Israel tells aid ship to change course as it nears Gaza – DW – 06/09/2025
Skip next section Welcome to our coverage The ship is trying to deliver humanitarian supplies to the besieged enclave, where the UN has warned of a looming famine Image: Majdi Fathi/NurPhoto/picture alliance A ship carrying humanitarian aid bound for the Gaza Strip is approaching the Palestinian enclave, which is under an Israeli blockade. In addition to much-need supplies, the British-flagged Madleen is carrying climate advocate Greta Thunberg and several other activists. As it neared Gaza early on Monday morning, the occupants aboard the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's ship said it was coming "under assault" from Israeli forces and was surrounded by quadcopters. Israel's Navy has said it has told the aid ship to change course. On Sunday, Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz said that he had instructed the military to stop the ship from reaching Gaza, warning "the antisemitic Greta and her Hamas-propaganda-spouting friends" to turn back. We'll bring you the latest developments on the situation in Gaza and the wider Middle East region on Monday, June 9, 2025.

Israel plans to stop Gaza-bound ship with Thunberg on board – DW – 06/08/2025
Skip next section Israel says it will block Gaza-bound boat with Greta Thunberg on board 06/08/2025 June 8, 2025 Israel says it will block Gaza-bound boat with Greta Thunberg on board Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military would stop the boat carrying climate advocateGreta Thunberg and several other activists to Gaza. The British-flagged Madleen aims to deliver humanitarian aid to the war-torn territory, which has been blockaded by Israel. "I instructed the IDF to act so that the Madleen ... does not reach Gaza," Katz said in a statement. "To the antisemitic Greta and her Hamas-propaganda-spouting friends, I say clearly: You'd better turn back, because you will not reach Gaza." Operated by the pro-Palestinian Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), the ship left Sicily on June 6 and is currently just off the Egyptian coast. Thunberg said she joined the mission to "challenge Israel's illegal siege and escalating war crimes" in Gaza and highlight the desperation for humanitarian aid. FFC press officer Hay Sha Wiya said on Sunday the boat was currently some 160 nautical miles (296 kilometers) from Gaza and was "preparing for the possibility of interception." In addition to Thunberg, there are 11 other crew members aboard. Among them Rima Hassan, a French member of the European Parliament. Israeli media have reported that the military plans to intercept the yacht before it reaches Gaza and escort it to the Israeli port of Ashdod, before deporting the crew. "The State of Israel will not allow anyone to break the naval blockade on Gaza, whose primary purpose is to prevent the transfer of weapons to Hamas," Katz said.
