India Dealt 'Jasprit Bumrah Blow' For 2nd Test vs England, Say BCCI Sources. His Replacement May Be...

Jasprit Bumrah will miss the second India vs England Test in Birmingham starting on July 2, sources confirmed to NDTV. The star fast bowler, who took five wickets in the first innnings of the first Test in Leeds, will not play the second Test as part of workload management. Bumrah's absence is bound to come as a big blow to the Indian cricketeam as the other bowlers lacked the fire-power in th first Test. While Bumrah took the first five-wicket haul of the series, Prasidh Krishna was expensive while Mohammed Siraj could not get enough wickets. Krishna's figures were 3/128 in 20 overs and in the second innings it was 2/92 in 15 overs. Mohammed Siraj's figures were 2/122 in 27 overs in the first innings and 0/51 in 14 overs in the second.
Compared to Bumrah's figures of 5/140 from 43.4 overs at an economy rate of 3.20, the rest struggled to match his impact. fast bowleing all-rounders Shardul Thakur, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna combined to return with figures of 9/482 from 92 overs, a massive chasm.
Ahead of the series it was decided that Bumrah will play only three of the five Tests against England. The second Test starts on July 2 in Birmingham, and there is a little gap after that as the third Test starts on July 10 in Lord's. Bumrah is likely to be available for the third Test.
Akash Deep and Arshdeep Singh are the two other specialist pacers in the squad. Medium pace allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy is another option. Most indications point towards left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh replacing Bumrah in the XI. While Arshdeep has not played any Test, he has ODI and T20I experrience. In T20Is, he is India's all-time highest wicket-taker with 99 scals in 63 games. Shardul Thakur may also be dropped for Reddy to add more batting muscle.
Earlier, former India coach Ravi Shatri warned the side about resting Bumrah from the second Test. "If he (Bumrah) was looking at a rest, you may have to think twice. If you don't have him and then go 2-0 down, it could be an uphill task," Shastri said on Sky Sports.
Former India batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar had suggested that India should consider playing Bumrah in all five Tests. However, India coach Gambhir quickly turned down the suggestion, claiming they were more concerned about his workload.
"I think for us, managing his workload is more important because there's a lot of cricket going forward, and we know what he brings to the table as well. So, before he came to the tour, it was already decided that he was going to play three Test matches. But let's see how his body turns out," Gambhir told reporters in the post-match press conference after the first Test.

'Bumrah Ka Saath Dena Hoga': Shami Wants Indian Bowlers To Step Up And Take Wickets

Last Updated: India bowlers produced a forgettable show in the first Test, and as a result, the Shubman Gill-led side failed to defend the target of 371 runs and went down by 5 wickets. Mohammed Shami is not happy with India's bowling performance in the first Test against England, which concluded on Tuesday (June 24) at Headingley with Shubman Gill-led side's defeat by five wickets. In the series opener, Indian bowlers, apart from Jasprit Bumrah, leaked runs and failed to take wickets as well. Shami, who was ignored by BCCI selectors for the ongoing five-match away series, wants bowlers to come up with a good show in the next four matches and take wickets with the new ball. In the first innings, Bumrah picked up one wicket for India in the first over before Ollie Pope (106) and Ben Duckett (62) added 122 runs for the second wicket, and in the second innings, Duckett (149) and Zak Crawley (65) added 188 runs for the first wicket in the 371-run chase. 'We dropped a lot of catches, and we need to work on it because at this level you can't drop easy catches and do misfielding because the match can slip, which eventually did as well. In bowling, other Indian bowlers should talk to Bumrah and learn from him. They should talk about planning with him and support him. If they will support Bumrah, then we can easily win the match," Shami said on his YouTube channel. 'If I talk about the first match, then I think we need to do a little work in the bowling. Shardul Thakur and Prasidh Krishna picked up two wickets each in the 2nd innings, but by the time Shardul dismissed two England batters, the match was out of India's reach." 'There is still so much left in the series, and for India to win, it will be important to bowl well. You have to take wickets with the new ball. As a bowling unit, we need to plan better so that we can win the match." First Published: June 26, 2025, 19:17 IST

"Country Over My Child": KL Rahul's 'Huge Call' Before India v England Test Series Revealed

India's star batter KL Rahul had a good start to the England Test series. He scored 42 runs in his first innings and followed it up with a well-crafted 137, albeit in a losing cause in the first Test in Leeds. Rahul has been opening the batting for India in the ongoing series after Rohit Sharma called time on his career in May this year. Rahul, who has mostly been used as a floater in India's batting line-up, has lived up to the expectations so far. Talking about his performance in the first Test against England, the credit for it goes to his commitment. Despite welcoming his baby in March, Rahul left no stone unturned to prepare himself for the England Test series. Delhi Capitals head coach Hemang Badani has pointed out Rahul's commitment. He said that the player preferred the country over his newborn. "I really liked the fact that he was someone who said, 'I want to go to England early. I want to play the side game.' Forget about the hundred he got - that came later. The intent - that's what matters. The intent to be there early, to be prepared, to be with the side. Let's not forget, he's a young father, and I don't think his child is travelling with him initially. So for him to say, 'Country over my child' - that's a huge call," Hemang Badani told Times of India. "He could've easily said, 'I'm not playing the side game anyway, I'll just go straight to the Test match.' But he didn't," he added. Rahul was part of the Intra-Squad match that took place between India and India A. This was the only match simulation for the Indian cricket team ahead of the games vs England. "KL made a statement I remember ahead of the Test series: 'I care for this team, and I want to be here.' He wanted to go to England. I could see the hunger in his eyes and in his words. In the absence of Rohit and Virat, he becomes the senior-most batter - and he has played that role really well," said Badani. "He's played in England before. And in terms of maturity and technique, you can clearly see he's more focused now. He knows he has to fill the vacuum left behind. The rest of the squad - apart from Karun - are mostly under 30. So he has to guide players like Sai Sudharsan, Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Nitish Kumar Reddy - all of whom are new to this level," he added.
