Teahupoo bounces back to win Stayers Hurdle at Punchestown

RTÉ News01-05-2025

Teahupoo successfully defended his Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle crown with a comprehensive victory on day three of the Punchestown Festival.
Gordon Elliott's charge returned to County Kildare off the back of successive defeats this season, including when bidding for back-to-back wins in the Stayers' Hurdle at Cheltenham in March.
The eight-year-old filled the runner-up spot in the Cotswolds, having previously found star mare Lossiemouth too strong in the Hatton's Grace at Fairyhouse, and was a 5-4 favourite to get himself back in the winner's circle under Sam Ewing.
After being settled in midfield for the majority of the three-mile journey, Teahupoo travelled strongly before being nudged to lead rounding the home turn and the further he went the better he looked, with four and a quarter lengths the margin over Asterion Forlonge.
Another fine performance from Teahupoo to win the Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle. #rteracing

Elliott said: "This horse has got me out of trouble a few times and he's done it again. He's a star of a horse.
"I was panicking turning in to be honest. If we had a couple of winners, I'd have had my chest out.
"He's so laid-back at home and you nearly start questioning yourself 'is he a bit heavy going around the ring'.
"Sam gave him a no-nonsense ride and kept it very straightforward. I'm very lucky to have the riders I have, the staff I have and the owners.
"I was dreaming last night if Teahupoo could win today and Meath could win the Leinster final it would finish off what has been a rough season to be a great season."

Joe McCarthy: 'We know everyone loves to hate Leinster'

Joe McCarthy believes "everyone loves to hate Leinster" and admitted that they use that perception as motivation. The Ireland second row was speaking following the province's 37-19 victory over Glasgow Warriors, which secured a first BKT URC final berth since 2021 Leo Cullen's side were never really challenged by the defending champions, who scored two late tries to put a flattering sheen on the scoreboard. Leinster had come in for severe criticism following a series of lacklustre performances in the last month but came out firing against the Warriors, scoring four of their six tries in the opening half. "We know everyone loves to hate Leinster so that definitely drives us on," the 24-year-old told RTÉ Sport. "We have a great fan base so we don't really care about the outside noise, what you guys [on the TV panel] say or the fans or other people say." "We just want to rip into next week," added the Dubliner, who will go on his first Lions tour this summer. "We definitely needed that, it's our first URC final. "It's massive for us. We need the fans behind us now, we're into Croke Park. "It's exactly where we want to be, it's a great buzz. "There's always pressure, we've never reached a URC final. "We've disappointment this year already so we want to finish strong and get the fans back on our side. Asked if Leinster prepared any differently this week, he said: "Nothing crazy, the lads are so up for it, so hungry to win silverware, there's a good feel but the job's not done yet." Hooker Dan Sheehan scored trademark lineout maul tries at the start and end of the first half, with Jamie Osborne and Thomas Clarkson crossing the line in between. "Our set-piece dominance has been a cornerstone of our success this year," said McCarthy. "Sometimes we haven't got a reward for it but today was a good day, we were accurate, really physical, we shut them down at lineout and scrum and we'll keep building on that." Glasgow boss France Smith admitted the better team won: "It was a huge performance from them from the word go. I felt the urgency. "On the day we weren't good enough, especially in the first half. They are a quality outfit. "I'm really proud [of the lads], you must see this in context."

Caoimhin Kelleher: Brentford move 'a long time coming'

Caoimhin Kelleher is confident that playing on a weekly basis in the Premier League will help him to hold onto the Ireland No. 1 jersey. The Premier League winning keeper with Liverpool made his long awaited move to Brentford this week. signing a five-year deal with the Bees after six seasons at Anfield, where he made 67 appearances. "Obviously, it's been a long time coming," Kelleher told RTÉ Sport after tonight's 1-1 draw with Senegal. "Really happy to get it over the line and get it done. And looking forward to get going over there. "(I've) played well for Ireland. I think I've done well enough to keep the No. 1 position. I need to keep playing well to keep the position. But no doubt playing week in, week out is going to help my cause, for sure." Having vied with Gavin Bazunu for the starting keeper jersey under Stephen Kenny, Kelleher has been the undisputed first choice under Heimir Hallgrimsson. Tonight saw another strong display, with Kelleher pulling off a spectacular fingertip save from Krepin Diatta to preserve Ireland's lead in the second half. He was ultimately beaten from close range by Ismaila Sarr although only on the rebound after saving with his feet from Cherif Ndiaye. Despite the late concession of the equaliser, Kelleher was satisfied with the performance and the direction of travel under the manager. "It was a big save (from Diatta). You have to make those big saves if you want to be a top goalkeeper. I want to keep doing that and helping the team. "We're disappointed to concede and not keep a clean sheet. But throughout the game, we were solid and we limited them to a few chances from crosses. We've come in there a bit disappointed not to win the game which is a good sign. They're one of the best nations in the world. It's very positive and we're going in the right direction. "We were brilliant in the first half. We sustained attacks really well. We didn't give them any chance to counter attack and we created a good amount of chances as well."

Kasey McAteer delight on night of firsts

First start, first goal – all that was missing was the first win to go with it as Kasey McAteer picked up the player of the match award in the Republic of Ireland's promising 1-1 international friendly draw with Senegal at the Aviva Stadium. The Leicester City player was a livewire in the first half and would have opened his Ireland account only for a simply spectacular save from Yehvann Diouf 21 minutes in. Never fear, McAteer reacted quickest to the stop, controlling the dropping ball beautifully, turning sharply and firing low to the net. Even with Senegal grabbing a second-half leveller through substitute Ismaila Sarr, McAteer was "over the moon" with his special night. "I think you can tell by my celebrations it was like a dream come through," he told RTÉ Sport afterwards. "It was my first night here at the Aviva, hopefully many more to come, but I wanted to get myself on the scoresheet, pity we couldn't hold on for the result but Senegal are a really good team and we'll take it in our stride." Although played out in front of a crowd of just 32,478, both teams put plenty of graft in at the Aviva with a late flashpoint involving both teams showed a desire that isn't always present in the friendly arena. "We went into the game saying that," McAteer said of the need to avoid that friendly lull. For us it's about having a good performance and getting a result. "Out there both teams wanted to win the game because that's in our nature and we want to win every game we play. "It was like a dream come true" Kasey McAteer speaks to @Corktod after scoring his first Republic of Ireland goal in the draw with Senegal #COYBIG #IRLSEN 📺 @rte2 @rteplayer 📱 Updates - — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) June 6, 2025 "It was a good game but unlucky we couldn't hold on in the end." Once Tuesday's friendly in Luxembourg is complete, all eyes will turn to the forthcoming World Cup qualifying campaign with Hungary visiting Dublin in early September. McAteer feels things are definitely moving in the right direction. "We had two good results last camp (two Nations League wins over Bulgaria), a good result today against a good team in the end, a really good team, they're ranked high. "We'll look at ourselves going into the next game and hopefully we'll get the win." "We've got some great players," McAteer added. "Festy (Ebosele) is really pushing and we can push each other. "The main thing is to get this country to the World Cup and that's our aim. Every friendly game we need to build and build and hopefully we'll get ourselves there in the future."
