UMC: 2 new accolades show commitment to elders
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — University Medical Center of El Paso announced Tuesday, Feb. 4 what it is calling a significant milestone in its efforts to deliver quality health care to the Borderland region and older residents in particular.
UMC said it has achieved two significant new accreditations — Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department Accreditation (GEDA) from the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and a Level 2 Age-Friendly: Committed to Care Excellence Recognition for its outpatient clinics from the Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI).
'As many members in our community age, they require more specialized care. This accreditation and designation, coupled with the geriatric center that will be built in Central El Paso, are prime examples of our focus toward seniors and their care. We are honored to be accredited as a Level 3 Geriatric Emergency Department and to have Age-friendly designated outpatient clinics to maintain the highest level of care for patients of all ages,' said Jacob Cintron, president and CEO for the El Paso County Hospital District.
The GEDA program is a national initiative that recognizes hospitals equipped to handle complex health issues among older patients, UMC said.
To obtain this accreditation, UMC's Emergency Department at the UMC Main Campus implemented specialized geriatric training for staff and screenings to identify potential risks in patients, such as cognitive impairment and fall risks, the hospital said.
As an Age-Friendly Health System, UMC's Outpatient Clinics have also implemented a set of evidence-based interventions specifically designed to improve care for adults age 65 years and older, the hospital said.
'The country is aging, and El Paso is no exception. The median age in El Paso in 2000 was between 28-30 years of age. Now, it is estimated at 34 years of age. The need is clear to health professionals and it must be understood by the public and policymakers, as well. This is one piece of the puzzle to ensure our elders are able to age with dignity,' County Commissioenr David Stout said. 'I am grateful to the community members who brought this opportunity to our attention, and to the Hospital District for moving on the initiative.'

El Paso County approves delivery method for construction of new Office of Medical Examiner
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The El Paso County Commissioners Court approved the use of a construction manager at risk (CMAR) for the construction of a new Office of the Medical Examiner on Monday, June 2. According to the news release by the County, the CMAR approach will 'allow the County to hire a construction firm early in the process to collaborate closely with the design team.' In addition, the CMAR method is 'designed to improve project coordination, manage costs, save time and deliver the best value for El Paso County,' the County said. Santa Teresa Industrial Arsenic Treatment Facility passes most recent arsenic test, CRRUA says
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Santa Teresa Industrial Arsenic Treatment Facility (STIATF) has passed its most recent arsenic test, the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) said in a press release on Wednesday, June 4. The CRRUA says the STIATF's most recent arsenic tests are at 6.9 parts per billion (ppb), which is below the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Maximum Contaminate Level (MCL) for arsenic of 10 ppb. The CRRUA says the latest result is from samples taken on Wednesday, May 21. In CRRUA's voluntary monthly arsenic tests for April, results for the STIATF were at 12 ppb. Two voluntary follow-up tests by CRRUA were 12 ppb on May 6 and 8 ppb on May 14, the utility said. The STIATF is one of four arsenic treatment facilities operated by the CRRUA. CRRUA says its four Arsenic Treatment Facilities (ATFs) are currently compliant based on the New Mexico Environment Department's Running Annual Average (RAA). 'It is a proactive process we undertake to keep our customers constantly informed about water quality,' said CRRUA Executive Director Juan Crosby. El Paso hospital celebrates Project Search students
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — An El Paso hospital celebrated its first class of students who made their way through a program designed to give them job skills and find employment. On Monday, June 2, the Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus celebrated its inaugural class of Project Search students with a graduation ceremony. This program provides opportunities for students with disabilities to learn job skills. The Sierra Campus is the fourth hospital within the The Hospitals of Providence network to have the program. At Sierra Campus, students started back in the fall. Throughout the school year, students are immersed in departments throughout the hospital and given the opportunity to learn new skills. Upon completion of the year-long program, many students will receive job offers within the hospital or in businesses throughout the community, The Hospitals of Providence said. 'We are truly proud to have welcomed this first cohort of Project Search students at the Sierra Campus this year and to have these incredible students as a part of our team – and to see them graduating today is remarkable,' said David Byrd, chief executive officer for The Hospitals of Providence Sierra Campus.
