GSPCA warns islanders over Guernsey online pet scams
An animal charity is warning islanders to be aware of scammers trying to sell puppies on social media that do not exist.The GSPCA said it was "extremely concerned" after receiving reports of dog-selling scams on Facebook.It warned the animals "either may not exist or could be from puppy farms".Manager Steve Byrne said people could consult either the GSPCA or a vet for tips on how to safely find pets.

Mr Byrne said pet scams were still catching people out following a surged during the pandemic."Around 400-500 households in Guernsey look for a new dog and about the same look for a new cat every year," he said.Mr Byrne said living on the islands presented "many challenges" for sourcing pets but people still needed to ensure they were not deceived and animals were bought from reputable breeders or rescue groups.He said it was "extremely important" people verified who they were dealing with before handing over money."Often the best way to find an animal is to be referred by a friend [or] vet," he said.

Car ploughs into pedestrian outside bar as police probe 'hit and run'
A police hunt is underway after a car ploughed into a woman outside a busy bar in Ayr - the woman was left in a serious but stable condition after she was rushed to hospital A woman was left in a serious condition after a car ploughed into a pedestrian. The incident in Ayr, Scotland, saw a car crash outside a busy bar in Ayr. Emergency services were called to reports of a hit and run at Rabbie's Bar on Burns Statue Square at just after 9pm yesterday. The woman, described as being in a serious but stable condition, was rushed to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock. An investigation is underway to identify the driver of the car and the passenger. Police are searching for a Vauxhall Astra, while a picture taken at the scene shows distressed locals surrounding a white Audi Q3 which is lodged between the pub and a bus stop. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 9.15pm on Saturday, 17 May 2025, police were called to a hit and run involving a Vauxhall Astra and a female pedestrian on Burns Statue Square, Ayr. 'The injured woman was taken by ambulance to Crosshouse Hospital in Kilmarnock where medical staff describe her condition as serious but stable. Enquiries are ongoing to identify the driver and passenger in the car." In an unrelated incident at the beginning of this month a woman was seriously injured in a hit-and-run scrambler crash in Dublin city. The woman, a pedestrian aged in her 60s, was struck by an electronic scrambler and seriously injured. The e-scrambler driver failed to remain at the scene and an investigation was launched, police in Ireland said. In April, an 81-year-old cyclist died after a collision on the A57 close to Tdwick. Graham Slinn died after Cain Byrne, from Chesterfield , drove off. The April 4 incident saw Byrne leave Graham critially injured before he was later arrested by police. Byrne pleaded guilty to charges of causing death by dangerous driving, driving while disqualified and driving with no insurance. He is due to be sentenced on June 27. Senior Investigating Officer Tom Woodward said according to the Sheffield Star: 'To drive a motor vehicle on the road is a privilege, and one of great responsibility to increase everyone's safety. We know that those who are willing to drive unlawfully are also likely to take greater risks and Byrne is a true reflection of this. 'This behaviour will not be tolerated on the roads of South Yorkshire, and Byrne will now face a lengthy prison sentence for his actions. At the heart of our investigation is Graham and his family and I hope that this verdict brings them some measure of closure. My thoughts remain with them and other families who have lost loved ones in similar circumstances."

Greek authorities delay inquest into death of British police officer in Kavos
Hannah Byrne, 22, had been out on the first night of her holiday in Corfu when she suffered a fatal head injury after falling several metres on 1 September 2023. The 22-year-old, who served as a constable with Surrey Police's neighbourhood policing team in Reigate, had opted to stay out while her colleague returned to their hotel. Greek authorities believed her fatal injuries sustained outside a bar were compatible with an 'accidental' fall. However, they were also investigating whether Ms Byrne had unwittingly drunk alcohol laced with methanol. On Tuesday, West Sussex Area Coroner Joseph Turner adjourned Ms Byrne's inquest, which was originally opened on 18 September 2023, for another six months. 'We are still awaiting information and material from the Greek authorities,' coroner's officer Anna Soczewka told the court in Horsham. Ms Byrne was found dead on the side of a main road by a passerby the morning after her fall. Her family and friends will now have to wait until 18 November this year for her case to next be heard at West Sussex Coroners Court. Shortly after her death, her family said: 'Our beloved Hannah was beautiful inside and out. She was extremely kind, funny, caring and had a real zest for life. 'She will be greatly missed by all who loved her.'
