Did a bald JD Vance meme really get this tourist banned from America? Here's what really happened
A 21-year-old Norwegian tourist, Mads Mikkelsen, claimed he was denied entry into the United States at Newark Liberty International Airport after immigration officers found a meme of US Vice President JD Vance on his phone.
The meme, depicting Vance with an exaggerated bald head, had circulated widely online. Mikkelsen said he was detained, questioned about drug trafficking and extremism, and pressured to unlock his phone under threat of a fine or imprisonment. After hours of detention and searches, he was sent back to Norway. However, US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) later clarified that the denial was due to Mikkelsen's admitted past drug use, not the meme.
The incident at Newark Airport
Mikkelsen arrived on June 11, 2025, intending to visit friends in New York and Texas. Upon arrival, ICE officers reportedly detained him, questioning him extensively about drug smuggling, terrorism, and extremism without clear cause. He was taken to a guarded room, asked to surrender his shoes, phone, and backpack, and pressured to unlock his phone under threat of a $5,000 fine or five years in prison.
What was found on Mikkelsen's phone?
According to reports, Officers discovered the JD Vance meme and a photo of a handmade wooden pipe saved from a chat app.

Mikkelsen explained these were harmless images, but officials reportedly treated them suspiciously. The meme had gained attention after Vance's controversial remarks during a White House meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky.
CBP's official response
US Customs and Border Protection issued a 'Fact Check: FALSE' statement on social media, denying that the meme or political reasons led to Mikkelsen's denial of entry. Instead, CBP stated the real cause was his admitted previous drug use, dismissing widespread media speculation linking the ban to the meme.
Allegations of harassment and record issues
Mikkelsen described the experience as humiliating and traumatic, alleging strip-searches, luggage ransacking, fingerprinting, blood sampling, and falsified travel records. He also noted confusion when his Norwegian passport was mistakenly labeled 'Spanish,' despite never having visited Spain.
While the viral story of a bald JD Vance meme causing a tourist's ban captured public attention, official sources confirm the denial was due to unrelated immigration issues. The incident underscores tensions between border security, digital privacy, and freedom of expression in an era of heightened scrutiny at US ports of entry.

No Suit In White House, Zelensky Goes Formal For Latest Trump Meet
KYIV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has returned his wardrobe since a disastrous Oval Office meeting with Donald Trump in February, switching his typical khaki military-style tee-shirts and long-sleeved tops for more formal, but still rugged, black suit-style jackets and shirts. The media-savvy leader had wanted to show solidarity with the troops fighting Russia on the frontline. But he was chided by a US reporter for not wearing a suit at the White House event, which descended into a shouting match over whether he was showing sufficient gratitude for U.S. wartime support. Since then, Zelensky has worked to rebuild relations with Washington, whose military help Kyiv still badly needs, even though the U.S. president has shown no sign of resuming the donations of weaponry that his predecessor Joe Biden, had instituted. When Zelenski met Trump at Pope Francis's funeral in Rome in April, he wore a heavy black field jacket and black shirt buttoned to the collar, with no tie. He sported a similar look when meeting British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in London on Monday, and again at the dinner hosted on Tuesday by the Dutch king that preceded Wednesday's NATO summit in The Hague. Although he was not invited to the meeting itself, he met with Trump afterwards, with an agenda including a wish-list of arms purchases. The subtle switch, stopping short of a white shirt or tie, has captured attention on social media and from the Ukrainian edition of ELLE magazine, which on Wednesday described his changed look as "visual diplomacy of a new kind". The negative focus on Zelenskiy's attire at the White House was widely criticised by Ukrainians, who have largely rallied around their leader since Moscow's February 2022 invasion. A communications adviser for the president's office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

1 more held over Kaliganj girl's death; victim's mom refuses money from TMC MLA
Kolkata: One more person was arrested on Wednesday over the death of a nine-year-old girl in Kaliganj on June 23. This is the fifth arrest in the case, whereas the FIR names 24 people. Forensic experts collected samples from the crime scene at Malandi village where Tamanna Khatun was killed in a bomb blast during a political procession following Trinamool Congress's victory in the Kaliganj bypolls. Police said the forensic team collected some "white substance", "hair clips stained with blood", and some other articles. These will be sent for chemical examinations. Meanwhile, Tamanna's mother, Sabina Yasmin, refused to accept the money offered by TMC's Debra MLA Humayun Kabir and set a 24-hour deadline for the police to nab all the culprits. Yasmin later alleged that the MLA attempted to give her money in a closed envelope in an attempt to silence her. Kabir told reporters that he was in Kaliganj not as a politician but as a human being. "I think everyone should raise their voice against such bomb attacks," he said. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said, "The parents are in pain. We will make no political statements on whatever they say. But as we have seen before, including during the RG Kar issue, although people demand a CBI probe, the agency has failed them time and again. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah?
