Kneecap deny support for terrorism groups and apologises to families of murdered MPs

Extra.ie29-04-2025

Belfast Irish rap trio Kneecap have released a new statement after calls for the band to clarify their rumoured comments on the likes of Hamas, Hezbollah and UK politicians.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin even got involved by sharing the need for 'urgent clarity' surrounding clips from two of their gigs which are now being investigated by the UK's counter terrorism department.
The band has now released a new statement to address these claims, saying they 'unequivocally' do not support Hamas or Hezbollah, and 'condemn all attacks on civilians.' The statement on social media reads: 'They want you to believe words are more harmful than genocide. Establishment figures, desperate to silence us, have combed through hundreds of hours of footage and interviews, extracting a handful of words from months or years ago to manufacture moral hysteria.
'Let us be unequivocal: we do not, and have never, supported Hamas or Hezbollah. We condemn all attacks on civilians, always. It is never okay. We know this more than anyone, given our nation's history.
'We also reject any suggestion that we would seek to incite violence against any MP or individual. Ever. An extract of footage, deliberately taken out of all context, is now being exploited and weaponised, as if it were a call to action. This distortion is not only absurd — it is a transparent effort to derail the real conversation. Mo Chara and Móglaí Bap from Kneecap performing at Coachella. Pic: Valerie Macon/AFP via Getty Images
'All two million Palestinian people in Gaza are currently being starved to death by Israel. At least 20,000 children in Gaza have been killed. The British government continues to supply arms to Israel, even after scores of NHS doctors warned Keir Starmer in August that children were being systematically executed with sniper shots to the head.
'Instead of defending innocent people or the principles of international law, the powerful in Britain have abetted slaughter and famine. This is where real anger and outrage should be directed towards.
'To the Amess and Cox families, we send our heartfelt apologies, we never intended to cause you hurt. Kneecap's message has always been — and remains — one of love, inclusion, and hope. View this post on Instagram

'This is why our music resonates across generations, countries, classes and cultures and has brought hundreds of thousands of people to our gigs. No smear campaign will change that.
'Suddenly, days after calling out the US administration at Coachella to applause and solidarity, there is an avalanche of outrage and condemnation by the political classes of Britain.
'The real crimes are not in our performances; the real crimes are the silence and complicity of those in power. Shame on them.' Kneecap performing at Coachella. Pic:for Coachella
The statement comes after Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch called for a member of the group to be prosecuted after a video emerged from a November 2023 gig, appearing to show him saying: 'The only good Tory is a dead Tory. Kill your local MP.'
The official spokesperson for British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer added that the Government leader believes the comments were 'completely unacceptable' and 'condemns them in the strongest possible terms'.
The inclusion of an apology to the Amess and Cox families comes after relations of the murdered politicians, Jo Cox and Sir David Amess, spoke out against the band and their supposed encouragement of violence against MPs. She explained: 'It is just beyond belief that human beings would speak like that in this day and age, and it is extremely dangerous,' adding that the band saying 'to kill anybody – what on Earth are they thinking', warning there are 'absolute nutters' who could try to act upon the comments allegedly made by Kneecap.
Meanwhile, Labour MP David Taylor has written to the organisers of the Glastonbury Festival, urging them to remove Kneecap from this year's line-up, with the band currently slated to appear on the West Holts stage on the Saturday of the festival. In a letter addressed to founder Sir Michel Eavis and posted on X, the Hemel Hempstead MP said: 'By hosting such a group, Glastonbury Festival risks undermining its proud tradition of promoting peace, unity and social responsibility.
'It would be deeply troubling to see the festival provide a platform to individuals who advocate hatred and violence, especially at a time when politcal and social tensions are already high.
'[Removing Kneecap from the lineup] would send a clear message that Glastonbury stands firm against violence, terrorism and political extremism in all its forms.' Kneecap Pic: Wiktor Szymanowicz/Anadolu via Getty Images
The festival team nor Sir Michel Eavis have responded to the calls yet, but its not the only festival under fire for having the band on their lineup.
The Hurricane Festival in the north of Germany and its sister event, the Southside Festival in south of the country, have both cancelled planned appearances from Keecap this summer.
There have also been calls to have them axed from TRNSMT festival in Scotland, and for the USA to remove, or not issue, visas to the trio for their scheduled concerts this October.

Antiques: Oscar Wilde's desk and a royal carriage bag

Among many highlights are a pair of 19th-century terrestrial and celestial globes on stands by John and William Newton, London 1818 (€15,000-€20,000), a Louis XV clock and matching barometer by Julian Le Roy, Paris, 1686-1759, (€10,000-€15,000), a bronze The Cossacks Crossing the Balkans by Evgeny Alexandrovich Lanceray, 1848-1886, (€10,000-€15,000), a collection of 19th and early 20th-century erotic Indian miniatures (€7,000-€10,000) and a four-fold screen The Star of Bethlehem after Edward Burne-Jones (€4,000-€6,000). An 18th-century Louis XV Cartel clock and matching barometer by Julian Le Roy. Lots like these do not come cheap, but this sale of fine art, antique furniture, silver, miniatures, decorative objects and religious artefacts sourced from private estates and collectors across Ireland offers a diverse collection to suit every taste and budget. Estimates are from €30 and €40 up for lots, including a figure of Buddha and carved ebony elephants (€60-€80), a pair of Birmingham silver pillar candlesticks (€100-€150) and an Edwardian dinner gong with horn supports (€80-€120). More than 1,000 lots will come under the hammer. The Irish giltwood side table and mirror by Arthur Jones, featured here last Saturday, is at €15,000-€20,000 among the most expensively estimated items. The oversized slope-front desk used by Oscar Wilde. Inset, a photo of the author, poet and playwright. There will be literary interest in a large William IV slope-top davenport attributed to Gillows with provenance to Oscar Wilde (€6,000-€8,000). Like many items at Wilde's house at Tite Street in Chelsea, it was quietly removed by friends who offered financial support and safeguarding of personal items before the court ordered auction of his possessions after his trial and imprisonment in 1895. The artist Mortimer Menpes, godfather to Wilde's son Vyvyan, took this desk and a French bateau bed exhibited at the Paris World Fair in 1878. The bed, also in this sale, is estimated at €3,000-€4,000. 'Fishermen by a River at Sunset' attributed to John Butts (c1728-1765). A c1740 oil on canvas, Fishermen on a River at Sunset, is attributed to John Butts (€4,000-€6,000), the artist who started his career in Cork and was influenced by Claude Lorrain and Salvator Rosa. In a catalogue note Dr. Peter Murray explains that the attribution of this Claudean landscape to Butts is based both on the subject matter and the style of painting. A 19th-century French gold brocade royal blue carriage bag owned by Queen Maria Amalia. A 19th-century French royal blue gold brocade carriage bag with coronet and trestle design was owned by the French Queen, Maria Amalia of Naples and Sicily (1782-1866), who was married to Louis Philippe I. Maria Amalia, niece of Marie-Antoinette, was the last Queen of France. Gifted to the Ursuline sisters, it comes to the auction by direct descent and is estimated at €800-€1,000. A fine specimen of the elk horns and skull of the gigantic Irish deer with 14 points and spanning 98 inches is reputed to have been found in the Bog of Allen. It is estimated at €10,000-€15,000. Viewing for this brimful-of-interest and treasure-filled sale gets underway in Castlecomer tomorrow at 1.30pm, and the catalogue is online.

Untitled 1 from the series 'After Magdalene' (2006-2009) The exhibition Dublin City Council's LAB Gallery has just opened its latest exhibition, 'What does it mean to know?' Magdalene laundries may be closed now, but their legacy lingers and this new work asks whether we, as Irish people, have reckoned with this painful past. Irish artists Ethna Rose O'Regan and Sinéad McCann, have worked in collaboration with writer and sociologist Louise Brangan to produce two new artworks: No babies were born there, a large-scale sculptural text work, and I'm still there, a light and sound installation. O'Regan's photographic series, 'After Magdalene' (2006-2009), was made in the last of the Magdalene laundries on Seán McDermott St, which officially closed in 1996 and is, poignantly, mere minutes from The Lab Gallery. During this exhibition, the artists involved and the Dublin City Council staff at the Lab will be sensitive to and supportive of any patron who may find the exhibit or experience distressing in any way.
