Fallen Heroes Memorial 5K draws hundreds in support
LAKELAND, Fla. (WFLA) — Around 800 people came out early Saturday morning to support officers killed in the line of duty.
The Lakeland Police Foundation hosted its 9th annual Fallen Heroes Memorial 5K at the Three Parks Trail.
Everyone who crossed the finish line raised support for local law enforcement, honored the officers killed in the line of duty, and raised funds for the Lakeland Police Foundation.
'Remembering the officers who have given their lives and paid the ultimate sacrifice is what this is all about,' said Lakeland Police Chief Sam Taylor.
The Lakeland Police Foundation hosts this event to remember their own killed and to raise funds to help support officers and their families during times of hardship.
'The Lakeland Police Foundation started this race 9 years ago as a way to honor the 7 men who died in the line of duty for our agency, the Lakeland Police Department, but since that time, it has become so much more,' said Assistant Chief Steven Pacheco. 'It's become a community event that we could honor other law enforcement officers who also died, and also, our military members who died serving this country.'
Some runners wrote down the names of Lakeland police officers who have been killed.
'Officer Crispin, who lost his life taking care of each and every one of us out here, so this is the least that we can do to pay back him and his family,' said Linda Martinez.
Other runners ran for officers killed in the line of duty in other states.
'His name is Nick O'Rear. I didn't quite know him personally, but I know his kids really well and I know how much they loved him and were devastated when he was lost,' said Adam Smith, who ran for an officer killed in Alabama.
Many who showed up to the event were proud to see the support for the men and women in blue.
'I do a desk job, right, and what they do is they risk their lives every single day for me and to keep us safe, so that's what brought me out here today,' said Donna Hughes, a runner.
'I've been doing this for 35 years, and this kind of feeds your soul when you come out and understand that the majority of people do like the police and they do support what we do,' Chief Taylor said.
Runners of all ages took steps to honor, remember, and let the memories of those killed live on.
Organizers said they're going to continue doing this event and that this is the largest community event that they have.

Former local news anchor sues rival station for defamation over report he says portrayed him as a ‘child predator'
A former local news anchor in Shreveport, Louisiana, has sued a rival station for defamation, accusing it of engaging in 'character assassination' after it ran a report he says portrayed him as a 'child predator.' Emmy Award-winning journalist Bill Lunn, a former anchor for ABC affiliate KTBS, filed the lawsuit late last month against rival local outlet KTAL, its married co-anchors Daniel and Jacquelyn Jovic, and its owner, Nexstar. The complaint was filed almost one year after Lunn resigned from KTBS in advance of a KTAL report claiming Lunn had been busted by 'vigilantes targeting men seeking to prey on underage girls.' Lunn had been cleared by a police investigation, and no charges were filed — a fact KTAL included in its report. Nevertheless, the former anchor said in his lawsuit that KTAL and Nexstar failed to 'vet, edit or confirm allegations that labeled him a child predator.' Lunn resigned to spare his employer any embarrassment, he said in the lawsuit, 'with the intention and hope to return to work once the facts cleared his name.' However, the lawsuit alleges the KTAL report ultimately 'ended his career in broadcast journalism.' The former anchor alleged that KTAL targeted him because of their two stations' rivalry in the Shreveport market. 'Jovic and his co-Defendants seized on the opportunity to bend the facts to their will in an attempt (to) take out or otherwise substantially interfere with the market leader and their direct competitor, Lunn,' the lawsuit alleges. Lunn downloaded the popular dating app Tinder on May 27, 2024, and was sent a message of 'interest' from a person he thought was a 19-year-old woman the same day, according to the lawsuit. Shortly thereafter, Lunn was asked to text the woman on her cellphone, after which she 'initiated a sexually explicit exchange.' Two days after the initial message, the supposed 19-year-old invited Lunn to her home, where he was ushered in by a woman. Upon entry, Lunn was 'beaten and robbed of his belongings' by a trio of men. After escaping the house, Lunn returned home and, with the help of another person, called the Shreveport Police Department, according to the lawsuit. Once police arrived, Lunn recounted the night's events and provided his cellphone to aid in law enforcement's investigation, at which point he noticed that the woman had edited her age in a text message from 19 to 16, the lawsuit says. Her Tinder profile, however, still showed her as being 19 years old. In the days that followed, Daniel Jovic, the rival reporter, contacted a police source to inquire whether Lunn had been found with a 14-year-old girl and whether he had fled from the police, according to the lawsuit. Jovic was told Lunn did not run, that no arrests were made and that the investigation was ongoing, the lawsuit says. Jovic interviewed the trio of men for a newscast he led with his co-anchor and wife, Jacquelyn, which was broadcast on June 3, 2024. According to the lawsuit, that newscast allegedly 'lied, misrepresented, and ignored the evidence in their possession,' relying on 'an interview conducted with a wholesale lack of diligence.' 'After meeting them, Jovic engaged in leading and calculated questioning eventually eliciting some 'facts' that, despite the source and Jovic's own training and knowledge as to their questionable truth or veracity, culminated in the false broadcast that derailed Lunn's career,' the lawsuit read. The next day, Daniel Jovic published a story on KTAL's website, revealing the group of local so-called predator hunters 'pretending to be an underage girl in an effort to 'catfish' local men who are allegedly trying to meet up for sex.' Despite publishing two subsequent stories — one reporting Lunn's denials and another reporting that police cleared Lunn — KTAL and the Jovic couple have 'never acknowledged, corrected, or retracted their numerous defamatory broadcasts in which they named Petitioner a child predator,' the lawsuit says. A Nexstar lawyer told Lunn's attorney that the company 'stands by the journalist and the stories as presented,' according to the lawsuit. The lawsuit does not list a specific dollar amount in damages sought by Lunn. However, he 'demands a trial by jury' in order to 'hold these Defendants accountable for their actions.' Nexstar, KTAL, Daniel Jovic and Jacquelyn Jovic did not immediately respond to CNN requests for comment.

Police search Bronx River for missing 2-year-old as father faces questions
The search is continuing for a missing toddler in the Bronx. The NYPD searched part of the Bronx River for a second day Tuesday. It's been a month since 2-year-old Montrell Williams was last seen. The NYPD initially took the search for him to the Bronx River Monday night, looking in the area of Bronx River Avenue and Bruckner Boulevard, near Hunts Point. Sources tells CBS News New York police were able to pinpoint surveillance video that put Williams' 20-year-old father in the area. Police deployed divers again Tuesday. According to police, the child was last seen on May 10, when his father took him for scheduled visitation. A police source said the mother went to family court on May 30, claiming she couldn't contact his father, which is a violation of the custody agreement. A judge then issued a warrant for his arrest to appear in family court. Police say the mother claims she had a confrontation with the father Monday that led her to believe the boy could be in danger, so she notified police. The father was taken into custody and appeared in family court, but allegedly refused to tell the judge where the child is. Sources said the father has no criminal record. Williams remains missing. Aurora, Illinois chiropractor faces more sexual abuse counts
An Aurora, Illinois chiropractor is facing even more felony charges in a growing sexual abuse case. Murtaza Hameed, 46, of Naperville, appeared in DuPage County Court on Tuesday on the additional charges. He was indicted by a grand jury on Thursday, May 29, 13 new counts of criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse, attempted criminal sexual assault, and misdemeanor battery. The new charges involved three more alleged victims bringing the total to five. On May 12, Hameed appeared in DuPage County First Appearance Court, a judge agreed to a prosecutors' motion to deny him early release. At his court appearance Tuesday, Judge Brian Telander granted Hameed pretrial release over prosecutors' objection, according to the DuPage County State's Attorney's office. Hameed was released on electronic monitoring with home confinement, and is not allowed to have contact with any minors other than his own children, prosecutors said. The DuPage County State's Attorney's office on Jan. 11, a 17-year-old boy was receiving chiropractic treatment at Hameed's office in the 3800 block of McCoy Drive in Aurora, when Hameed sexually abused him. The boy told his father what had happened when he got home from the appointment, and the boy's father called Aurora police right away, prosecutors said. Aurora police in turn called the DuPage County Children's center, and authorities learned a 16-year-old boy also claimed he had been sexually abused by Hameed in 2016, prosecutors said. Since Hameed was arrested, three more alleged victims have come forward, prosecutors said. These victims claimed the abuse happened between July 2016 and January of this year, and the age range spans from preadolescent boys to adult men.
