Tiger Woods Biopic in Development at Amazon MGM
Amazon MGM is developing a biopic about golf legend Tiger Woods, with 'King Richard' director Reinaldo Marcus Green and Barack and Michelle Obama's Higher Ground Productions in talks to direct and produce, respectively.
Winkler films is on board to produce the film, which will be adapted from 'The Tiger Slam,' a new book released this past November by former Golf Magazine editor-in-chief Kevin Cook.
The book takes its name from Woods' most famous achievement: winning four consecutive major tournaments starting with the 2000 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and continuing with the Open Championship and PGA Championship later that year before winning the Masters in the spring of 2001.
In doing so, Woods became the only golfer of the modern era to hold all four major titles at the same time and cemented his status as the biggest star of his sport. Throughout the 2000s, Woods went on to increase his major championship count to 14, second only to Jack Nicklaus' 18 for the most of all time.
But in 2009, Woods' career was derailed by scandal after he admitted to multiple affairs, leading to an eventual divorce from his then-wife, Elin Nordegren. Multiple injuries would then hamper his attempt at a return to dominance, though he did win his 15th major championship at the 2019 Masters. Earlier this week, Woods underwent another surgery for a torn Achilles tendon, likely forcing him out of this year's Masters.
The new project comes as Amazon MGM prepares to increase its theatrical film slate, committing 12-14 films to movie theaters per year after Amazon acquired MGM in 2022. The studio will make its main stage debut at CinemaCon next month.
Cook is represented by CAA and David Halpern at David Halpern Literary Management. 'The Tiger Slam' was published by Avid Reader Press, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
