A luxury travel bubble is swelling
WHEN you go on vacation, do you ever treat yourself to an upgraded airline seat? Or book the (admittedly cheapest) room at a five-star hotel? Maybe splurge on a spa day or celebratory Michelin-starred meal? If any of this sounds familiar, you may be what the travel industry calls an 'aspirational' luxury traveller. And much to the industry's potential dismay, you're also inflating an economic bubble that may be about to burst.
According to McKinsey, the aspirational set, defined as those with between US$100,000 and US$1 million in net worth, now accounts for 35 per cent of the global luxury travel market. In 2023, they spent US$84 billion on high-end vacations, a figure expected to grow to US$107 billion by 2028.
That purchasing power has helped turn luxury travel from a glamorous niche into a major profit centre, sparking a race among airlines, hotels, cruise lines, tour companies and the rest to cater to and capture this market segment. But what happens when economic uncertainty suddenly brings aspirations back down to earth?
Consider the reasons why so many people with money – but not true US$10,000-a-night-suite money – started spending so much on fancy getaways.
One is the boom that kicked off with post-Covid 'revenge travel' and was going strong until recently. Even as prices climbed, Americans have increased their travel spending every year since the 2020 bust, according to the US Travel Association.
There's also a demographic element: Millennials, the generation that popularised the idea of investing on experiences over things, are entering their peak spending years.

Perhaps less considered is a cultural shift that's normalised the idea that all travel should be luxurious. You see it in pop culture (who wouldn't check into the White Lotus, body count or no?), but nowhere is the luxury obsession more pronounced than on social media. The travel industry has discovered the marketing power of influencers, gifting them private jet outings and luxe villas that they then flaunt all over our timelines, sending an unmissable message that anyone bunking at a 'meh' chain hotel or stuck in the back half of the plane is a loser. It's gotten to the point that there was even a movement on TikTok to 'normalise' flying coach.
As the luxury category has swelled to encompass both the uber-rich and aspirational splurgers, travel companies have been quick to invest. Post-pandemic, the pipeline of new luxury and upscale lodging has been expanding at a faster rate than that of more affordable hotels. At the very top of that range, the number of hotels charging an average daily rate of US$1,000 or more has more than trebled since 2019.
Even Airbnb is looking to go upscale – in May it debuted a new service that lets users book a personal trainer, masseuse or chef for in-rental pampering.
Meanwhile, US airlines, including United and Delta, have been increasing the share of planes given over to 'premium' seating. Some have also introduced a class of service that falls between business and economy plus (that is, extra-legroom coach seats).
The cheapie airlines, too, have had their heads turned by the appeal of luxury options: Southwest has adopted extra legroom seats, while JetBlue and Frontier are planning to add first class.
But wider seats, posher rooms and even the odd hot-stone massage may not be enough to woo travellers spooked by a potential downturn and America's increasing hostility to the rest of the world.
To hear the industry tell it, the fall-off in the sector's latest earnings is little to worry about. In March, Delta cut its profit and revenue forecast but later reported that 'we are not yet seeing any cracks in premium'. For its part, United said it would trim domestic routes due to weak demand – even as it noted that new premium cabin bookings were up over last year.
It's not crazy to think the ultra-rich may keep booking even if, as many are expecting, the economy slows, inflation returns and the stock market falls into a funk. (Though the recent cratering of luxury retail suggests that's not a sure thing.)
Unlike the multimillionaire crowd, though, aspirational luxury travellers aren't in a position to ignore the status of their bank and 401(k) accounts. Many of them might understandably choose to trade down to (for shame!) economy-class seats or the kind of hotel that offers a free breakfast buffet.
The industry has never been particularly good about thinking beyond the moment. When Covid hit, the airlines hacked schedules to the bone – only to be caught off guard when demand came roaring back, and then to find themselves cutting prices last year when they couldn't fill all the new flights. Meanwhile, the development process for hotels can take years; by the time a new property opens its doors, the environment that inspired its construction is long gone (the glut of supply that came online during the 2008 recession is probably the most painful such example).
This would be a smart time for travel companies to take a look back at that chequered history and reconsider just how big they want to bet on luxury carrying them through what could be a bumpy couple of years. For vacationers, a slowing economy could be a reminder that, while creature comforts are wonderful, at its heart, travel is more about people and places than perks. And the companies that find ways to deliver value and keep those experiences accessible are likely to be the ones that come out ahead. BLOOMBERG

Commentary: Record profits for SIA and other airlines, but aviation's long-term outlook isn't that rosy
SINGAPORE: From three years of losses during the pandemic to three consecutive years of record profits, Singapore Airlines (SIA) has made international headlines for the profit-sharing bonuses given to its employees, most recently 7.45 months' worth. SIA Group declared excellent financial results, with S$2.78 billion (US$2.14 billion) net profit for the fiscal year ended March 2025, boosted by a one-off S$1.1 billion gain from the divestment of stake in India-based Vistara. Emirates, a rival that is comparable in reputation to SIA, reported a record profit of US$5.77 billion People may have come to think of healthy profits as routine in aviation. But that hasn't typically been the case across the sector, according to management consultancy McKinsey. In fact, the airline industry's recent results and especially those reported by leading airlines such as SIA and Emirates have proven many analysts, including me, wrong. Most had anticipated airlines to struggle post-COVID once everyone scratched their revenge travel itch. Among the factors was that video conferencing adopted during the pandemic would persist to the point of reducing business travel, a key contributor to full-service airlines' profitability. That clearly hasn't happened. Also unanticipated were the robustness of the global economy post-pandemic and consumers' willingness to continue paying top prices amid concerns about cost of living and inflation. All these contributed to the increased yields (or the earnings for every available seat per kilometre travelled) enjoyed by carriers such as SIA compared to the pre-pandemic years. Customers are unlikely to find much respite from high fares in the short term. Demand simply outstrips supply. The International Air Transport Association expects the number of passengers to reach a record high of 4.99 billion in 2025, up 4 per cent from 2024. Airlines have faced difficulties in bringing planes that were mothballed during the pandemic back on stream constraining the supply of seats. Boeing and Airbus, which together control a large proportion of the commercial airliners made, have also told customers to expect delayed deliveries for new aircraft. They reported backlogs at the end of 2024 of over 5,500 and 8,600 aircraft respectively, considering between 600 and 800 were typically delivered each year. In particular, Boeing has had quality problems over the last few years, with the American planemaker's 2024 marked by a string of high-profile mishaps, legal challenges and the lowest number of deliveries (348) since the pandemic. AVIATION'S LONG-TERM PROSPECTS AREN'T THAT ROSY But at the risk of being wrong again, I would venture to say that air fares cannot keep going up. The long-term prospects of airlines are weaker than their short-term prospects. On the demand side, there are three reasons. First, there is a cloud of uncertainty hanging over the global economy, chiefly attributable to the prospect of a global trade war. Many economies in Asia will be dented by the imposition of United States tariffs (especially if the paused 'reciprocal' tariffs and more sector-specific tariffs come to pass), affecting the purchasing power of consumers in these countries. Equally importantly, if regional (or even within-country in the case of the US) supply chains substitute global supply chains, the multinational presence (especially of US multinationals) in Asian countries may decline, in turn impacting business travel to and from these countries. Second, employment in the tech sector – which has been a good paymaster for many people, especially the younger demographic – might struggle because of the emergence of AI and related technologies. Several recent reports suggest that layoffs by many tech companies are substantial, though it remains unclear whether these layoffs are because of the adoption of AI. Third, the recent uncertainty about the visa policies of the US might reduce the travel demand to and from the US, which will likely impact global travel demand. On the supply side, there are two reasons. New airlines may enter, especially if the yields earned by incumbent players continue to be firm. Markets with strong growth in the airline traffic such as India are already witnessing the entry of several smaller players who are not taking larger rivals head-on but competing with them regardless. As existing players aggressively add seats, yields might come down over time even if demand stays high. We are already seeing signs of this: In 2024, the US-based airlines reported record sales but not record profits. BUSTS AFTER BOOMS As always, the airline industry is also affected by uncontrollable factors such as jet fuel prices, pandemics and wars, among other things. The industry has often witnessed busts after booms, so going by past patterns, a bust may not be that far away. So, what is my advice to travellers? Maybe, for discretionary travel, they can pick and choose among destinations that offer better value while waiting for fares to moderate. For airline executives, my advice is to remain flexible by not taking on too much expansion, especially if it involves debt financing, squeezing out cost savings and strengthening their balance sheets. In other words, be ready to take advantage of the opportunities but protect your downside as well, if the environment becomes adverse.

Chinese tourists ramp up European summer trips, as Americans cut back

PHOTO: REUTERS Newly cost-sensitive Americans may be hitting the breaks on their big European vacations this summer, but another group is taking up the slack: Chinese travellers. According to a survey about long-haul trips the European Travel Commission (ETC) is publishing on June 10, which was previewed exclusively with Bloomberg, 72 per cent of Chinese respondents say they plan to travel to Europe this summer – up 10 per cent from 2024. The figures reflect the highest demand from Chinese travellers since the pandemic. That should elicit a sigh of relief for hoteliers, restaurateurs and other business owners across the continent who depend on big-spending foreign tourists. Before Chinese outbound tourism ground to a halt in 2020, it represented a particularly lucrative sector in Europe, with Chinese travellers coming in second to Americans in spending. Chinese tourists spent US$251 billion (S$323 billion) abroad in 2024, according to UN tourism, surpassing pre-2020 levels. That makes China the largest market in terms of overall tourism spending, even if until recently most of this revenue was spent on trips within Asia. But there's a significant catch in ETC's findings: Chinese tourists do not plan to spend like they used to. That is notable, given the group's previous propensity for luxury shopping. In fact, just 29 per cent of respondents say they plan to spend more than €200 ($290) per day, a 44 per cent drop compared to last summer, and a majority of Chinese travelers – 54 per cent – plan to limit their budgets between €100 to €200 a day. Even still, at least 53 per cent of Chinese respondents in ETC's report indicate shopping will play at least some role on their trips, and budgets are more generous among business travellers, 36 per cent of whom expect to spend more than €200 a day. Overall, Chinese tourists are being tighter with their budgets than most of their global counterparts. The ETC's survey queried 7,100 long-haul travellers from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, South Korea and the US about their summer travel intentions – and results show that a total of 11 per cent of travellers to Europe will be lowering their spending this summer. The overall ratio of travellers spending only €100 to €200 per day – 40 per cent – was lower than the Chinese traveller percentages. The reality is that in a climate of economic uncertainty, few travellers are splurging – regardless of their origins. That is echoed in data from the World Travel & Tourism Council showing that tourism growth is expected to slow sharply in 2025. Only a third of the ETC's American respondents are planning trips to Europe this summer, which is 7 per cent fewer than in 2024. And yet another three markets surveyed in the ETC report – Brazil, Canada and Japan – are on the decline, to a lesser degree. High travel costs and plans to vacation locally are the primary deterrents. Mr Eduardo Santander, chief executive officer of the ETC, sees reasons for optimism. 'While recovery from China has been more gradual than other long-haul markets, momentum is clearly building,' he said. Building back business with these travelers, he added, 'remains a top priority for many European destinations.' In other words, it's a relief that Chinese travellers are coming at all. Russian Railways said it had agreed with North Korea's railways ministry to resume a twice-monthly service between the two capitals on June 17, a journey it said took eight days and which, at over 10,000km, was the longest direct rail journey in the world. Another service between Pyongyang and Khabarovsk, a Russian city close to China's north-eastern border, will restart two days later. The services will be operated by Korean State Railway, the state operator, and in the case of the Moscow-Pyongyang route will see a North Korean passenger railcar hitched to the regular Moscow-Vladivostok service and then re-attached to another train. Passenger rail traffic between Russia and North Korea was suspended in February 2020 at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. Moscow and Pyongyang have since ratcheted up cooperation, including in the military sphere since President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty in 2024. North Korea confirmed in late April that it had sent more than 10,000 troops and weapons to Russia to assist in its war in Ukraine, aid which proved crucial for Moscow in recapturing Russia's western Kursk region from Ukraine. The two countries already operate a passenger rail service between Vladivostok in Russia's Far East and Rason, a North Korean port city. The nations are also linked by freight rail networks, although Russia does not disclose the size of the cargo traffic.
