A French tourist in her 60s was arrested and hospitalized in Iceland after two people were found dead at a luxury hotel in central Reykjavík, Icelandic news outlet RÚV reported over the weekend.
While authorities have not released the names or confirmed the specific relationships among those involved, RÚV reports that the deceased were the woman's husband and daughter.
The group was reportedly due to depart Iceland on Saturday, the outlet reported.
The Context
The double homicide has drawn attention both in Iceland and internationally due to the nation's reputation as one of the world's safest countries.
Iceland has one of the lowest murder rates in Europe, with only two recorded homicides in all of 2021, according to data from Statista.
Iceland attracts millions of tourists each year, seeing over 2.3 million visitors in 2024, with 90 percent going to Reykjavík, Iceland's capital, according to the Icelandic Tourist Board.
What To Know
The Metropolitan Police in Reykjavík received a call early Saturday morning regarding an incident at the Edition Hotel, the release from the department said.
Emergency services, including four ambulances and a firetruck, responded after the call at 7:14 a.m. local time, with police sealing off a hotel floor during the response, Iceland Monitor reported.
Other hotel guests were told to stay in their rooms while authorities responded to the incident.
A man and woman were found on the fourth floor with multiple injuries, reportedly including stab wounds, the release said.
A woman in her 60s was found alive but hospitalized with injuries considered non-life threatening, Deputy Chief Inspector Ævar Pálmi Pálmason told mbl.is.

GOP Senator's Minnesota Assassination Comments Spark Backlash

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Senator Mike Lee, a Utah Republican, is facing widespread backlash following posts about the targeted shooting of two Democratic lawmakers and their spouses in Minnesota. The suspect, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, was arrested late Sunday following a nearly two-day statewide search. The Saturday morning shootings left State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, dead, and wounded State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. "This is what Marxists don't get their way," Lee posted on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a photo of Boelter wearing what appears to be a latex face mask. Newsweek has reached out to the senator's office for comment by email. Why It Matters President Donald Trump—as well as several Republicans—has long used the label "Marxist," or also "communists," to describe Democrats. Experts who study political messaging have said the term is inaccurate and dangerous as it risks fueling political polarization in the country. Police said they had uncovered a notebook with an apparent target list naming Democratic officials, abortion providers as well as civic and business leaders, The New York Times reported. A state report in 2016 listed Boelter's political affiliation as "none or other," and another report in 2020 listed him as having "no party preference," according to The New York Times. Voters do not declare political affiliation when they register in Minnesota. What To Know Lee also shared another post of Boelter with the caption: "Nightmare on Waltz Street." Nightmare on Waltz Street — Mike Lee (@BasedMikeLee) June 15, 2025 He appeared to be making a reference to Minnesota governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, misspelling his name. According to a criminal complaint, police responded to a shooting at a home in Champlin, Minnesota, at around 2:05 a.m. local time Saturday. A 911 caller reported that a masked individual had approached their home and opened fire. Authorities say a masked Boelter posed as police officer as he shot the Hoffmans. The Brooklyn Park Police Department, having learned of the Champlin shooting, proactively dispatched officers to the home of lawmaker Hortman. At around 3:35 a.m, they witnessed Boelter shoot Mark Hortman through a doorway. Boelter fled after officers exchanged fire, said police who found the Hortmans dead inside the home. Boelter's vehicle and personal belongings were found roughly an hour from where the shootings took place. Police also uncovered a target list naming Democratic officials, abortion providers as well as civic and business leaders This is what happens When Marxists don't get their way — Mike Lee (@BasedMikeLee) June 15, 2025 SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk also drew backlash for attempting to blame the "far left" for the attacks. "The far left is murderously violent," Musk wrote on X, as he shared a post that said without evidence that the left "now kills a MN state rep and her husband and injures a Senator and his left has become a full blown domestic terrorist organization." Authorities have not confirmed Boelter's political affiliation or motive. In a Sunday press conference, Governor Walz appealed for political unity. "Now is the time for us to recommit to the core values of this country, and each and every one of us can do it. Talk to a neighbor rather than arguing, debate an issue, shake hands, find common ground," he said. Boelter previously served on Minnesota's Governor's Workforce Development Board—appointed by Governor Mark Dayton in 2016 and reappointed by Tim Walz in 2019. What People Are Saying The timing and tone of the posts have drawn strong criticism on X: Dan Pfeiffer, former senior adviser to President Barack Obama, said: "Truly disgusting behavior from a United States Senator." Brett Meiselas, co-founder of media company MeidasTouch, wrote: "For a U.S. senator to be posting fake information like this after Democratic lawmakers were just shot is just so beneath contempt I don't even know where to begin." Journalist Karly Kingsley wrote: "A senator celebrating the murder of political opponents should be expelled. Not debated. Not excused. Expelled." Journalist Aaron Rupar said: "This is an egregiously shameful tweet from a US senator." What Happens Next Law enforcement officials say the investigation into Boelter's motive is ongoing. Governor Walz said Sen. Hoffman has come out of his final surgery and is moving toward recovery.

Employee's 'Petty Revenge' on Colleague Who Keeps Taking Their Pens Praised

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A worker who grew tired of their colleague repeatedly stealing their favorite pens turned to an unexpected solution—refilling the pens with glitter ink. The incident was detailed in a post shared by u/Main_Scallion2394 in the r/pettyrevenge subreddit, and it has gone viral, amassing over 51,000 upvotes since June 9. Titled "My coworker kept stealing my pens. so I started refilling them with glitter ink," the post recounts how one office worker devised a sparkly form of petty revenge after months of missing pens. "I work in this pretty chill office," the poster began, "but for whatever reason my pens kept missing—not like … all my pens. Just mine, the ones I actually liked using." The worker in the viral Reddit post said that they suspected a particular coworker but wanted to avoid direct confrontation. That changed one day during a meeting: "I kinda had a feeling who it was but didn't wanna cause drama, then one day I saw her using my purple gel pen during a meeting. I said something like 'hey I think that's mine' and she just laughed and went 'oops lol [laugh out loud] didn't even notice.'" Stock image: A woman holds a pen while talking to a man also holding a pen while seated at a desk. Stock image: A woman holds a pen while talking to a man also holding a pen while seated at a desk. Getty Rather than escalate the situation, the poster got creative. "So I ordered some cheap refillable pens and swapped the ink for glitter gel. They looked normal when you wrote with them but dried all sparkly and ridiculous," the poster noted. The payoff came at the next office meeting. "Next meeting she's writing away and someone goes 'why does your notebook look like a birthday card?' She just stared at it like it betrayed her soul," the poster wrote. Since then, the pen thefts have stopped. "My pens haven't gone missing since—no apology or anything … just awkward silence. Honestly? I'll take it." Etiquette expert Jo Hayes told Newsweek: "While this petty revenge may have felt satisfying in the moment for OP [original poster], the reality is that this sort of behavior is what one would expect of a child, not a grown adult working in an office environment." A 2022 study by The Myers-Briggs Company found 36 percent of people reported dealing with conflict at work often, very often, or all the time. Poor communication was found to be the No. 1 cause of conflict and "the more time that an individual spent dealing with conflict at work, the lower their job satisfaction and the less included they felt," the study said. Experts Warn Against Petty Revenge While many on Reddit applauded the poster's creative approach, etiquette experts said there might have been a better way to handle the situation. Hayes acknowledged the wrongdoing of the pen thief: "Of course, what the pen-stealer has done—and on a continual basis—is wrong; no doubt about it." However, she added: "The MO [modus operandi] for dealing with this sort of thing is clear, direct, adult communication, not passive-aggression, avoidance, or petty revenge." Nick Leighton, an etiquette expert and co-host of the Were You Raised by Wolves? podcast, agreed. He told Newsweek: "Better would be a polite-yet-direct conversation with the colleague. Something along the lines of 'I've noticed my pens keep disappearing … I would appreciate it if you would ask before borrowing them.'" Leighton added: "Unfortunately, good etiquette isn't usually as satisfying as exacting sparkly revenge." Hayes said that, while addressing these situations can be uncomfortable, doing so builds valuable life skills. "Sure, addressing a situation—even one as seemingly innocuous as pen stealing—is uncomfortable. Few would disagree. But any adult who wants to be successful in life needs to get comfortable with being uncomfortable." She added: "Avoiding uncomfortable situations, particularly conflict resolution, might be the easy way out in the moment, but, in the long run, we only do ourselves a disservice." 'Devilishly Clever' Despite the experts' advice, the majority of Reddit commenters were firmly on the side of the original poster. One user, u/IDGAF53, commented: "Oh that's devilishly clever. You're my petty kinda person!" Another, u/AstrixRK, wrote: "Perfectly petty! This is a perfect example of petty revenge." User u/JustanOldBabyBoomer added: "Glittery revenge is the BEST revenge!!!!" Another, u/Affectionate_Gap8220, said: "I would love this as a form of 'revenge'—innocent and right to the point!" Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via the Reddit messaging system. Do you have a work-related video or story to share?
