What is teamLab? The art attraction coming to Abu Dhabi explained
TeamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, the capital's newest art attraction, will open in the Saadiyat Cultural District on April 18. It will merge art, science and technology through exhibitions across 17,000 square metres that engage sight, sound and touch, according to teamLab. It says the ever-changing installations will seamlessly blend with the architecture, making each visit unique. But who and what is teamLab? And how did they become an important name in the art world? Japanese engineering students Toshiyuki Inoko and Shunsuke Aoki, along with three other classmates, founded teamLab in 1998, while they were studying at the University of Tokyo. The group called themselves 'ultra-technologists' and consisted of artists, programmers, engineers, CG animators, mathematicians and architects. During the first 10 years of their project, teamLab made little profit, getting more popular with the growth of smartphone and social media use in the 2010s. The group got their big break in 2011 when Japanese artist Takashi Murakami invited them to make their international debut at the Singapore biennale. By 2014, teamLab's work had grabbed the attention of New York's Pace Gallery, which began promoting the collective's work and continues to do so. TeamLab's work centres on using technology such as laser projection and colourful lights, alongside smoke machines and reflective surfaces, to create an immersive experience for visitors. The group uses these and other methods to transform galleries and large rooms. Their work often explores the concept of borders and space, how far the eye can see and what it can recognise in the manufactured space. For teamLab, art is a living, breathing experience, one that is all around us, and that can be felt vividly in their spaces. Images of everything from universes to gardens are projected around a room, over the ceiling and the walls, bathing visitors in a world of colour. TeamLab describes its exhibitions as 'body-immersive', requiring a visitor to use all of their senses, including touch, to experience the art. At its exhibition in Tokyo, a section requires visitors to remove their shoes and walk barefoot on a grassy surface to get a fuller experience. Today, the group has permanent exhibitions in many cities around the world, including Tokyo, Jeddah, Macau, Osaka, Singapore, Okinawa and Valencia. TeamLab Planets Tokyo holds the Guinness World Record as the most visited museum (in the single art group category), after it recorded 2,504,264 visitors between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024. TeamLab continues to host temporary exhibitions while expanding its permanent spaces. This year, teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi will open, while teamLab Borderless Hamburg is set to open next year. Singapore is the country with the most teamLab exhibitions outside Japan with five.

Metaplanet Unveils Unprecedented $5.4B Bitcoin Investment Initiative
Tokyo-based investment firm Metaplanet has announced a groundbreaking plan to raise approximately $5.4 billion through the issuance of 555 million moving-strike warrants, aiming to significantly expand its Bitcoin holdings. This move represents the largest stock acquisition rights issuance in Japanese capital markets history and marks the first instance of such warrants being issued above market price. The company's ambitious strategy, dubbed the '555 Million Plan,' sets a target to acquire 210,000 Bitcoins by the end of 2027, equating to roughly 1% of the total Bitcoin supply. This initiative follows Metaplanet's earlier '21 Million Plan,' under which it aimed to hold 21,000 Bitcoins by 2026. Having already surpassed interim goals with 8,888 Bitcoins, placing it tenth globally among corporate Bitcoin holders, Metaplanet is now intensifying its efforts. The issuance of 555 million new shares through moving-strike warrants is designed to optimize capital raising with minimal dilution. If fully exercised, this issuance could generate an estimated ¥770 billion at an initial strike price of ¥1,388 per share. The funds raised will be primarily allocated to purchasing Bitcoin, with smaller portions earmarked for bond redemptions and income-generating strategies like selling put options. ADVERTISEMENT Metaplanet's CEO, Simon Gerovich, highlighted the significance of this move, stating that it represents Asia's largest-ever equity raise dedicated to Bitcoin. He emphasized the company's commitment to accelerating its Bitcoin strategy, aiming for 30,000 Bitcoins by the end of 2025, 100,000 by 2026, and reaching the 210,000 target by 2027. The company's approach leverages Japan's deep capital markets, where demand for regulated Bitcoin exposure remains strong. Metaplanet's stock, known for its liquidity, offers domestic investors an accessible, tax-advantaged vehicle to gain Bitcoin exposure—a notable advantage given Japan's lack of spot Bitcoin ETFs. This strategic move positions Metaplanet alongside other major corporate Bitcoin holders, drawing parallels to MicroStrategy's pioneering Bitcoin-backed securities approach. The firm's execution to date has been swift, with its previous capital raise of ¥102.8 billion fueling a 225.4% increase in Bitcoin holdings year-to-date. Now, Metaplanet aims to deliver an even more aggressive 600% Bitcoin yield by the end of 2025.

How to *actually* take good pics at teamLab Phenomena
ICYMI teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi in Saadiyat Cultural District is the latest exhibition taking over the capital. Irshowcases groundbreaking artworks by the international art collective teamLab, all of which are inspired by the balance between nature, the manufactured world and the environment. It's got to be seen and if you do go you will 100% be wanting to get some shots for the 'gram, which may be a little overwhelming due to the lighting and everything to see. Dw though as we've been sent tips on shooting content on Apple iPhone at the spot. Keep reading if you are heading to AD's teamLab soon. Tips for shooting content at teamLab Phenomena by Peter Jay Shot by Peter Jay 1. Turn on the level and grid. The first two immersive experiences don't have a clear horizon line, which can make it tricky to get a straight shot. Enabling the level and grid helps ensure your framing is perfectly aligned. It's a simple trick, but it can save a lot of time and effort in post-processing. 2. Dealing with screen flicker in video mode. If you notice flickering while recording video, it's likely because the lighting frequency in the room doesn't match your camera's frame rate. To fix this, head into your video settings and adjust the frame rate until the flicker disappears. Alternatively, in video mode, just tap the frame rate digits on the top right of your screen and select a better-suited value. 3. Shooting in low light with Night Mode. In darker areas, your device may suggest a longer exposure time—sometimes 5 seconds or more. You can control the exposure length by swiping left or right to adjust it. Since much of the experience features moving light art, I recommend shortening the exposure time to avoid motion blur—unless, of course, you're going for a more abstract, artistic effect. Tips for shooting content at teamLab Phenomena by Jerome Rafael Shot by Jerome Rafael 1. If you're using an iPhone Pro model and shooting with a third-party app (like ProCamera), enable RAW to retain maximum detail and dynamic range. 2. Lock Focus and Exposure (AE/AF Lock) is crucial. Tap and hold your focus point until the yellow box appears. Then adjust the exposure by sliding up or down. Tips for shooting content at teamLab Phenomena by Debbie Fortes Shot by Debbie Fortes 1. Using the feature 'clean up' for post-processing your images, helps a lot especially if you would like to remove clutter or people in your photo. 2. Ensure it's in Live Mode – if you want the long exposure effect on your photo. 3. Preserve settings on your camera mode are also useful – making sure you are always using the last mode rather than switching to different modes or different settings of your camera. You want to make sure that you are always ready to shoot away and not worry about adjusting the settings from time to time.
