Estrange encounter of the impressive kind at Haydock

Estrange encounter of the impressive kind at Haydock

Making her seasonal reappearance after three runs last year in which she was beaten only once and ended the campaign with a Listed triumph at Doncaster, the David O'Meara-trained four-year-old was ridden with confidence by Daniel Tudhope.
Still in cruise control on the outside of runners travelling for home, the 13-8 chance only had to be given the minimum of encouragement to account for market rival and favourite Shaha by four and a quarter lengths.
An IMPRESSIVE performance 👏

Put in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe by her Cheveley Park Stud connections at the first entry stage, that does not look too fanciful now.
Paddy Power cut her to 33s from 66-1 for Paris, while Coral also halved her odds to 25-1 from 50s.
O'Meara said: 'Danny said she's great to ride. She shuts down and saves energy, you can put her anywhere and give her a small squeeze and she comes alive. For me for the yard, for everyone it is brilliant to have a horse like her in the yard.
'She handles cut in the ground, she's gone on good ground today. I think we'll stay away from quick conditions, but the Pretty Polly (at the Curragh) could be considered or there's a race back here, the Lancashire Oaks, and then the Yorkshire Oaks and if she is good enough it would be great to be considering Longchamp.
'Potentially she could be the best we've had.' Estrange really looked the part (Martin Rickett/PA)
O'Meara has trained Group One winners like Amazing Maria, Mondialiste and G Force and he said Estrange's talent was obvious from a very early stage. 'We knew before she made her debut at Goodwood that she was very good,' he went on.
'You don't gallop these sort of fillies every day. Goodwood was no surprise, Yarmouth was a disappointment, but I blame myself for that, Doncaster was then great.
'Today was a step up again, she looks like she's progressed and I'm very, very lucky to have her.
'It never looked in doubt at any stage today.'
O'Meara was completing a double on the card following the earlier success of Stressfree.

Clover favouring York for Tabletalk's next date

The four-year-old Camelot colt ran into the smart Eydon at Newbury last month when he was beaten by a length and a quarter, but a drop to Listed level for the mile-and-three-quarters Grand Cup on the Knavesmire could he on his agenda. He has course and distance form after winning the Melrose Handicap there last summer and Clover also has the potential of the Irish St Leger later in the season. Clover said: 'He ran well in the Aston Park Stakes and there is a one-mile-six-furlong Listed race at York, so we'll go there I think. 'He's obviously won the Melrose, so the one-mile-six is well within his grasp. He had a really good race again in Group Three company which is really good to see and he's had two really good races in Group company, so he looks like he's going in the right direction. 'The Irish St Leger could work and I need to speak to the owner as to where we go from there. There's lots of options available to us so we'll have to see where we go and it will be dictated by where we go up until then.' Clover is keeping his options open with Invictus Gold. The three-year-old won a Newmarket handicap on his most recent start, with the Wokingham and Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes possible options, although a trip to York offers an alternative test for the son of Invincible Spirit. Clover said: 'He could well go to the Wokingham. There's a nice handicap at York the Saturday before which is for three-year-olds only which we could look at for him. 'He's at his best on top of the ground. He's run well on good to soft but I don't think he'd want it really soft, so that dictates to a certain extent where we go. 'It's whether we want to give lots of weight away at York or be a more nicely-weighted horse potentially in the Wokingham if we get in. I think historically we'll get a run in the Wokingham, so fingers crossed that might work still and we could also think about throwing him into the Holyrood if we wanted to.' Clover all but ruled Al Nayyir out of the Ascot Gold Cup, adding: 'I'd be surprised if Al Nayyir takes his chance in the Gold Cup. He was a little disappointing at Sandown last week so I think we'll probably give that a swerve.'

Lazy Griff team hoping to secure Soumillon's Derby services

'He ran really well at Chester and wasn't fully spot on for that and wasn't too far behind Lambourn, so we're expecting him to improve fitness wise,' said Middleham Park's Mike Prince. Another favourite comes in! 🔥 Lambourn wins the Boodles Chester Vase Stakes 🥇#ITVRacing | @ChesterRaces — ITV Racing (@itvracing) May 7, 2025 'Lambourn is around a 12-1 chance and we know our lad is a guaranteed stayer and there will be a few in the field who are not, so he definitely warrants being in the race, that's for sure. 'We do need it to rain a little bit and he's a German bred and would need a little cut. Good ground is fine but if it was good to firm, we would then have to take a view. There is some rain around and we'll certainly declare and then hopefully the rain arrives.' In comparison to those towards the head of the betting like Ruling Court who cost Godolphin €2.3million and Ballydoyle candidate The Lion In Winter who was a €375,000 purchase, Lazy Griff was a relative bargain from Baden-Baden's BBAG September Yearling sale in 2023 at €75,000. Prince continued: 'It's very hard to compete at middle distances against the big owner-breeder conglomerates and we don't actually buy that many horses of that mould for that reason. 'We do try to just buy one or two horses each year that we hope would give us a chance and through bloodstock agent Jeremy Brummitt, that has come off this year. 'It's lovely to be there mixing it and he will be plenty long enough in the market. But we know he'll stay and there will be a few who won't, so it would be great to see him run well.' Christophe Soumillon is poised to ride Lazy Griff (Steven Paston/PA) Lazy Griff was ridden by the aforementioned Soumillon when scooping Group Three honours in the Prix de Conde as a juvenile and the Belgian pilot – who has made no secret of his desire to one day land Epsom's showpiece event – is now pencilled in to ride having taken a shine to the son of Protectionist at Chantilly. 'Christophe said when he won the Group Three that he loved the horse, he gave him a good feel and he'd love to ride him again,' added Prince. 'It made sense to try to book a jockey of that pedigree for the ride.'
