
UP to expand fortification efforts, distribute fortified wheat flour through PDS
Uttar Pradesh is set to expand its food fortification efforts by piloting the distribution of fortified wheat flour through the Public Distribution System (PDS). The announcement was made during the 19th State Connect Programme, jointly organised by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), Uttar Pradesh State FDA, and the Confederation of Indian Industry – Food and Agriculture Centre of Excellence (CII-FACE) in Lucknow on Thursday.
Ranvir Prasad, principal secretary, civil supply and consumer protection, highlighted that over 40% of the state's population is affected by anaemia. To address this, the government has already implemented rice fortification across 865 PDS outlets, 1,823 Anganwadi centres, and 102 rice mills, benefiting around 19.17 lakh people. The state's next step—piloting wheat flour fortification—is expected to further combat micronutrient deficiencies and boost nutritional security.
A dedicated session on large-scale fortification brought together industry experts and organisations such as PATH, GAIN, Fortify Health, Technoserve, KHPT, and WFP. These stakeholders shared best practices and technological innovations to enhance the fortification of staples like rice, wheat, edible oil, and milk. Supported by the Gates Foundation, CII aims to use this platform to drive improved compliance and manufacturing standards.
With 35% of India's wheat and sugarcane output and significant food processing infrastructure, Uttar Pradesh continues to strengthen its food safety ecosystem. The expansion of food testing labs to 18 across the state signals a focus on improved lab capacity and safety monitoring.
Ranjan Kumar, principal secretary of Ayush and Food Safety & Drugs Administration, emphasized awareness campaigns and digital monitoring tools aligned with the Viksit Bharat vision. Dr SK Panda from FSSAI reinforced the importance of FBO registration on the FoSCoS portal and robust risk-based inspections.
FSSAI also conducted hands-on training on digital compliance through live FoSCoS demonstrations, while sessions covered detection of milk adulterants and food contaminants, with a lab demo at CSIR-IITR enhancing practical understanding among officials.

Coimbatore restaurants adapt to ban on mayonnaise made from raw eggs
Following Tamil Nadu government's ban on the use of mayonnaise made from raw eggs, food business operators (FBOs) in Coimbatore have adapted to the regulation. The one-year ban, in effect since April 8, 2025, is intended to prevent food-borne illnesses caused by microbial contamination. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) had cited risks associated with raw egg-based mayonnaise, which can be a breeding ground for pathogens such as Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritidis, Escherichia coli, and Listeria monocytogenes, especially when not stored at recommended temperatures (0–5°C). In a promising development, the ban appears to have had limited economic impact on eateries in Coimbatore due to the availability of alternatives and increasing public awareness. Many restaurant owners report that customers are more conscious about food safety and are willing to accept minor taste differences or price increases if safety is ensured. According to Ramesh Babu, General Manager of restaurant chain Cockraco in the city, the switch had been made well in advance as it moved to eggless mayonnaise over three years ago. 'We procure in bulk from trusted manufacturers. Any hotelier's concern must be to provide good quality and hygienic food. If the mayonnaise costs a bit more, the food item can cost a bit more too - a shawarma that was ₹ 100 can be sold at ₹ 120. Customers are willing to pay for safety', he said. He also noted a behavioural shift among consumers. 'Earlier, customers would request multiple servings of mayonnaise. That demand has reduced significantly', he said. Shruthi S., who runs Momolicious in the city, said her team uses boiled egg whites as a viable substitute. 'Customers initially noticed the difference in taste, but have adjusted. The business has not been affected economically. We have simply explored what we can do differently to ensure that quality and safety go hand in hand', she said. Customers in the city have also welcomed the change. K. Sneha, 22, from Pappanaickenpalayam said she could not find much difference in the taste of mayonnaise after the ban. T. Anuradha, FSSAI Designated Officer for Coimbatore, said various steps are being taken to raise awareness on the ban in the city. 'Awareness meetings were held with fast food sellers on Wednesday. Queries of the restaurant owners regarding the mayonnaise ban were resolved, with alternatives being suggested. They received training on essential safety measures, food storage practices and pest control, and were also informed that the FSSAI would take strict action against eateries not complying with the same', said Dr. Anuradha, adding that FBOs have been extremely cooperative towards the change.

Gupta also appreciated AIIMS, saying it was a ray of hope for millions of people in the country who come to the premier institute for the best treatment and life-saving medical interventions. She mentioned that AIIMS served more than six lakh patients annually through its out-patient department. She further said that in terms of medical treatment, ICU facilities, admission system and the dedication of doctors, AIIMS ranked among the country's top institutions. Gupta also planted a sapling on the AIIMS campus marking World Environment Day. She described this initiative as a vital part of Delhi govt's Harit campaign. While stressing that Delhi govt would plant 70 lakh saplings this year, Gupta urged the citizens to join the initiative in their areas and turn it into a people's movement.

Food safety department holds awareness meetings with fast food sellers in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: In response to complaints regarding the sale of banned raw egg mayonnaise, and to clear the confusion about which types of mayonnaise are permitted, the food safety department in Coimbatore conducted a meeting with fast food sellers on Wednesday. The meeting was aimed at addressing food safety concerns, particularly the risks of food poisoning. FSSAI designated officer for Coimbatore district Dr T Anuradha said, "Many sellers lack clarity about the ban on raw egg mayonnaise. During this meeting, we informed them about the ban and recommended alternative varieties such as mayonnaise made with pasteurized eggs and vegetarian ingredients. Even vegetarian mayonnaise must be handled and stored according to safety protocols. We urged everyone to use fresh mayonnaise that does not contain raw eggs." Dr Anuradha also said the participants received training on essential safety and standard measures within the food industry, including the importance of proper waste disposal, pest control, and obtaining medical certificates for food handlers. She warned that businesses that do not possess an FSSAI licence may face fines of up to Rs 10 lakh and possible suspension of operations. Further, she said there are around 5,000 to 6,000 fast food shops operating in Coimbatore district, most of which licenced. 'This programme is set to cover these establishments zone by zone. We have five zones in the city and 11 blocks in the rural district. On Tuesday, we covered two zones, and the remaining areas will be addressed in the coming days. We also hold sessions for Food Safety Training & Certification (FoSTaC), as well as licence registration and renewal camps," she added. The food safety department also plans to conduct similar meetings with hoteliers and suppliers of packaged drinking water.
