Neal Communities helps raise $10K for PACE girls through Lucky Duck Race

LAKEWOOD RANCH, Fla. (BLOOM) — What began as a personal connection more than two decades ago has blossomed into a powerful partnership between Neal Communities and the PACE Center for Girls of Manatee County, thanks in large part to Accounting Manager Jennifer Villareal.
Villareal first became involved with PACE in the early 2000s when two young women close to her attended the center. One went on to serve in Iraq with the U.S. Army; the other built a long career in childcare and is now pursuing new professional goals.
'I was able to witness first-hand the care and attention PACE provided to girls at a crucial time in their lives, when a handful of choices makes the difference between graduating high school and having opportunities—or the alternative,' Villareal said. 'When these young women achieve their goals and become empowered, productive members of our community, their success has the power to resonate across generations.'
Villareal now coordinates Neal Communities' support of the annual Lucky Duck Race, which benefits PACE Manatee. This year, the Lakewood Ranch-based homebuilder served as the Community Sponsor, donating $10,000 to the event. The race features adopted rubber ducks floating down the Manatee River, raising both funds and awareness for the center's mission.
PACE Center for Girls provides academic and social services through a strengths-based, trauma-informed model that focuses on the future potential of each girl. Since opening, the Manatee location has supported more than 1,500 girls and is part of a larger statewide network recognized as one of the most effective programs in the U.S. for keeping adolescent girls out of the juvenile justice system.
'We are so grateful for our partnership with Neal Communities,' said Amy Wick Mavis, executive director of PACE Manatee. 'Their investment in the future of our PACE girls demonstrates their true commitment to Manatee County.'
Beyond financial support, Villareal believes visible corporate backing sends a powerful message to the girls in the program.
'When girls attending PACE Manatee see support from companies with a large local presence, like Neal Communities, they know they are seen and supported in an incredible way beyond the halls of PACE,' she said. 'It's great that I get to share the mission of PACE with people who had no idea it even existed.'
Neal Communities has built more than 24,500 homes across 90 communities from Tampa to Naples during its 55-year history. With a company motto of 'Where You Live Matters,' Neal has donated more than $9.2 million to local charities. In fiscal year 2024, the company reported $800 million in revenue.

PACE introduces Victory for Victoria Day in honour of tortured journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna

The PACE Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media has decided to establish a day dedicated to war correspondents and freedom of journalism in honour of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna, who was tortured and killed in Russian captivity. Source: MP Yevheniia Kravchuk, Deputy Chair of the Servant of the People faction, on Facebook Quote: "An important initiative was launched today [3 June – ed.] during the hearing on my resolution on Ukrainian journalists in Russian captivity at the PACE Committee on Culture, Science, Education and Media meeting in Norway. At the suggestion of PACE President Theodoros Roussopoulos, a 'Victory for Victoria' Day will be established – a day dedicated to war correspondents and freedom of journalism. This day in PACE will be dedicated to the memory of Ukrainian journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna, who was abducted, tortured and killed in Russian captivity. Unfortunately, her story is not unique. Every year, dozens of journalists are killed, captured or disappear without a trace while covering the war against Ukraine." Details: Kravchuk said that the aim of the initiative is to honour journalists who have been killed or have disappeared while reporting the truth. It has been proposed that an annual PACE resolution, a minute of silence during the autumn session in Strasbourg, and a side event during the session will be introduced. Kravchuk also announced that Victory for Victoria Day will be celebrated for the first time this year at the PACE autumn session (29 September-3 October) during the vote on a resolution on Ukrainian journalists in captivity. Read articles by Viktoriia Roshchyna for Ukrainska Pravda Background: Viktoriia Roshchyna disappeared on 3 August 2023 while reporting from Russian-occupied territory. In 2022, Roshchyna wrote a series of articles for Ukrainska Pravda from the temporarily occupied territories. Her work included stories about life in occupied Crimea during the war, the pseudo-referendum in occupied Donetsk Oblast, and a photo report from the devastated city of Mariupol. On 25 July 2023, Roshchyna left Ukraine for Poland, planning to make the three-day journey via Russia to the occupied part of Ukraine's east. It was not until May 2024 that Russia admitted to having detained Roshchyna. The Russian Ministry of Defence sent a letter confirming this to her father, Volodymyr Roshchyn. On 10 October 2024, Petro Yatsenko, the head of the press service of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, said during the 24/7 national joint newscast that Viktoriia Roshchyna had died in Russian custody. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukrainian Parliamentary Commissioner for Human Rights, later said he had received confirmation of Roshchyna's death from the Russian side. The Office of the Prosecutor General announced that a criminal case opened in connection with Roshchyna's disappearance has been reclassified as a war crime combined with premeditated murder. Investigators from the media outlet found that Roshchyna was brutally tortured in Russian captivity: her body had knife wounds, she was tortured with electricity and Russian prison staff hid her from inspections. According to the autopsy, the body of journalist Viktoriia Roshchyna had numerous traces of torture and some of her internal organs are also missing. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!

Future of Chicago area transit funding uncertain after lawmakers miss deadline

The Brief Illinois lawmakers failed to pass a package aimed at addressing a $770M funding cliff for the CTA, Pace and Metra. The House of Representatives can still pass the package after missing a deadline, but it will be an uphill climb. Republican and suburban lawmakers want more of a say on how the money is distributed. CHICAGO - Riders on the CTA, Pace, and Metra might be facing service cuts after state lawmakers failed to pass a bill aimed at preventing a $770 million funding shortfall. The General Assembly didn't give final approval for a package to reform the transit agencies serving the Chicago area, even as they approved a $55 billion budget for the next fiscal year. The backstory The Illinois Senate passed a package that would have consolidated all three transit agencies, provided a universal fare card, and called for "efficiencies" to save money. There would also have been new revenue from taxes on rideshares and delivery services. But the House of Representatives could not pass the bill by the midnight deadline on Saturday. So now, if the Democrat-controlled House aims to pass the package, they need a super majority of 71 votes during a special session or fall session. It's an uphill task that might require buy-in from downstate lawmakers. "This, to me, has to not just be about Chicago proper, or even the collar counties," said State Rep. Kam Buckner (D-Chicago). "It has to be about the entire State of Illinois. This needs to be a bill that finds ways to create transit opportunities for the entire state." Buckner cited the need to help the transit system in Springfield, near the St. Louis border, and potentially create a "seamless" rail route between Chicago and Peoria, which doesn't exist. "There's a lot of stuff we can do to make this palatable for the entire state," he added. The other side There's been considerable pushback to the plan from Republican and suburban representatives who argued the bill would subsidize Chicago riders and the CTA on the backs of suburban residents. They want a bill that helps out Metra and Pace riders more. Orland Park Mayor Jim Dodge told Fox 32 that suburban leaders should have a bigger say about how the pie gets distributed. "If we're paying for it, what is our say?" Dodge said. "We want to be at that table in saying, OK, how do you balance this out so you really think appropriately about transportation in Chicago: roads, rails, buses, etc. So it's a big problem and they need to fix it."
