2 North Carolina river sites fail E. coli testing this week after 12 last week

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A nonprofit group that tests more than 50 sites weekly along North Carolina rivers reported Friday just two areas failed for testing of fecal bacteria levels this week. Sound Rivers monitors and tests rivers throughout the summer from the Durham and Raleigh area to the coast. This week, nearly all river sites were clear after 12 river areas failed testing last week. 'Last week's results were likely due to the rain we had prior to testing,' Clay Barber, Sound Rivers' program director, said in a news release. 'Any time there's a hard rain, water quality can be affected by the influx of stormwater into the waterways because stormwater runoff can carry some pretty nasty stuff off the land and into the water.' Don't swim in these North Carolina river areas; 12 sites fail fecal bacteria testing, group says The upper Neuse River watershed had no sites that failed for E. coli testing, the group said. However, two sites in the lower Neuse River watershed failed — meaning there were elevated levels of fecal bacteria, which brings an increased risk of gastrointestinal illness, Sound Rivers reported. The Maple Cypress Boat Ramp in Grifton failed along with Slocum Creek near Havelock, the group said. Several areas closer to the coast passed the testing, but five areas at Lake Royale were not checked this week. In areas of salt water, Sound Rivers checks for enterococci for their Swim Guide. Five sites were not texted in the upper Neuse this week: Clayton River Walk, Neuse Golf Club, Smithfield Town Commons, Hickory Hill, and Ledge Rock. Based in Raleigh, New Bern, and Washington, Sound Rivers has worked for more than 40 years to help improve the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico rivers. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Dry for Saturday, tracking rain and thunderstorms on Sunday

The Latest From Storm Team 5… We received good news in terms of the wildfire smoke, we no longer have an Air Quality Alerts in northeast Wisconsin as the latest one expired at noon Friday. However, this weekend, the WI DNR is saying we will have some elevated levels of smoke around and some surface ozone, but conditions are looking better then days past. Tonight, an early shower is possible, but most see mostly cloudy skies with temperatures in the low to mid 50s. Saturday will be the best day of the weekend. Expecting a mixture of sun and clouds, high temperatures will work back into the middle 70s. We were watching the chance of a pop up shower, but the main thinking is that will stay out in central and western WI. At worst, a brief shower may brush up against our western counties. Sunday will start dry, but a cold front cutting across the state will bring with it a line of rain and thunderstorms, beginning in the late morning and ending by the late afternoon. Then we will watch for a few more isolated thunderstorms to pop up during the evening. Severe weather is not expected. Highs will sit in the low 70s. The upper level low from this system will rotate in on Monday, likely bringing more scattered showers and storms on Monday. Adding an early rain chance Tuesday, but expecting a run of dry weather as temperatures warm up mid week. Watch for the return of more smoke early next week. CI Road Trip: Tremont Turkey Festival

TREMONT, Ill. (WMBD) — Chief Meteorologist Chris Yates was in Tremont on Friday for our CI Road Trip. Chris was visiting the Tremont Turkey Festival and was enjoying the food, including the strawberry shortcake. He said he is also looking forward to having a turkey leg. This is the festival's 59th year, with the theme 'Gobble and Groove' honoring the festival's history of live music. Chris talked to Miss Tremont, Ava Proehl, who said her favorite thing about the festival is the community and the businesses. 'I think it's amazing to promote small businesses and look at all the knick-knacky, small things that vendors sell,' Proehl said. The festival will run from June 6 to 8. More information on the festival is available here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
