Family members scared, calling me multiple times: Indian student studying in Iran
Faizan Ali, a 21-year-old student of Kerman University of Medical Sciences in Iran, has never got so many calls from family members as much as he is receiving these days. Ali, who hails from Srinagar, told PTI that his family members are scared for his safety amid the Iran-Israel conflict . "I have been in boarding school since class 7 and I am not used to talking to my family members daily. But ever since Israel launched attack on Iran, my family has been calling me 10 times a day inquiring about my well-being," he said over a WhatsApp call. Ali, who is in first year of the medical college, said their exams were ending on Tuesday, but the university has announced cancellation of exams and closure of the varsity till October. Tehran is completely devastated," he said. We heard gunshots. The students in Tehran are really scared. Since it is the centre of the country, evacuation is also a challenge. But I have heard that students are being taken to safe locations," he added. The 21-year-old said that the internet services are also affected in the country. "It is taking three to four minutes for WhatsApp mesages to go through. That day, my father asked me whether I had food and if I was doing fine. I texted him back saying I was safe but that message took nearly half an hour to reach him," he said, and urged people back home to pray for the safety of those stuck in Iran. The medical student said they are hoping that they will be evacuated either by Monday evening or Tuesday morning. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday said he spoke to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar regarding students from the Union Territory stranded in Iran and was assured that necessary steps would be taken to ensure safety of all Indian students. On Sunday, Indian nationals in Iran were asked to exercise due caution and maintain contact with the Embassy of India in Tehran through its social media accounts in view of the current situation in the country following the launch of strikes by Israel. Israel on Friday last launched Operation Rising Lion to strike at Iran's nuclear, missile and military complexes. The strikes left key military commanders and nuclear scientists dead. Iran retaliated by launching waves of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel.

Call for law to ensure rights of domestic workers
Confederation of Free Trade Unions of India (CFTUI) national president N. Kanaka Rao on Monday (June 16) demanded that the Centre enact a comprehensive law to ensure the rights of domestic workers such as minimum wages, social security and legal protection as per International Labour Organisation Convention no. 189. The CFTUI organised a meeting with domestic workers on the occasion of the 15th International Domestic Workers' Day here. Addressing the participants, Mr. Kanaka Rao said 43 countries have ratified this landmark agreement and expanded the rights of domestic workers, while 56 countries have implemented labour reforms to protect the rights of domestic workers owing to the tireless efforts of many trade unions and social organisations around the world. He explained that CFTUI represents the largest number of domestic workers among all trade unions in India. But, despite the adoption of the agreement, in the past 14 years, despite several struggles led by domestic workers' associations and social organisations, the Indian government has not framed any special law for domestic workers. Expressing concern at the plight of domestic workers in the informal sector of work in India, the CFTUI president said they were largely excluded from the ambit of labour laws. He said a division bench comprising Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjal Bhuyan had issued an order on the lack of legal protection for domestic workers in India. The court had said it was the Constitutional responsibility of the government to protect the oppressed classes. The bench had directed the Centre to constitute an expert committee comprising the departments of Labour and Employment, Social Justice and Empowerment, Women and Child Development and Law to examine the condition of domestic workers and recommend appropriate legislative measures. He said that the committee was supposed to submit its report within six months, but no action has been taken even after five months of the Supreme Court's order. On the occasion of International Domestic Workers' Day, he demanded that the Centre immediately frame a comprehensive national law for domestic workers.

Member of govt's all-party global outreach, Abhishek Banerjee asks: ‘33 countries toured, how many backed India?'
Trinamool Congress (TMC) national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, who was part of the all-party delegations that travelled abroad to convey India's stance on terrorism, on Monday questioned the effectiveness of these trips, while asking pointed questions to the Centre on the Pahalgam terror attack. Less than a week after Prime Minister Narendra Modi met all the delegations following their return, Abhishek said: 'After reaching out to 33 countries post-Pahalgam in the last one month, how many extended explicit support to India?' Asserting that his concerns mirrored the feedback and questions he had received from civil society members and citizens across the five Asian countries his delegation visited, Abhishek spoke about 'the lack of accountability and transparency' by the government over the attack that left 26 dead. In a comprehensive post, Abhishek raised four other areas of concern besides diplomacy. On the border breach and civilian casualties, he demanded to know how four terrorists had 'managed to infiltrate' and carry out the attack. There must be accountability for 'the massive breach in national security', the TMC leader said. Speaking on 'the intelligence failure' behind the attack, Abishek questioned the one-year extension granted to Intelligence Bureau (IB) chief Tapan Kumar Deka barely a month later. 'If this was an intelligence failure, why was the IB chief granted a one-year extension… Why was he rewarded rather than held accountable? What is the compulsion?' Abhishek posted. He added: 'If the Government of India can conveniently use Pegasus spyware against Opposition leaders (including me), journalists and even judges, what stops it from using the same tools against terrorist networks and suspects?' On the status of the Pahalgam terrorists, Abhishek sought clarity on the fate of the four responsible for the 'brutal, religion-based massacre'. He asked if they were dead or alive, and if neutralised, why the government had failed to issue a clear statement. He also questioned the government's silence if they had not yet been apprehended. Abhishek asked when India intended to 'reclaim' Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and why the government had not officially responded to US President Donald Trump's claim that he brokered the ceasefire between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor with promises of trade. The ceasefire had 'disregarded… the emotions of 140 crore Indians', Abhishek said, and asked what led to such a 'compromise' after the nation had united behind the Armed Forces. He said it was a surprise that despite India being one of the world's largest economies, and the Centre projecting the country as a 'Vishwaguru', the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank had approved significant financial assistance and long-term investments to Pakistan immediately after the attack. He questioned how a nation 'repeatedly involved in cross-border terrorism' escaped global scrutiny and was seemingly rewarded, and why Pakistan was appointed vice-chair of the United Nations Security Council's Counter-Terrorism Committee barely a month later. Abhishek concluded his post by highlighting that over Rs 2 lakh crore had been spent on external affairs over the past 10 years, asserting that 'the Indian public deserves transparency, accountability and results – not silence and spin'. Following the TMC leader's post on X, its Rajya Sabha MP Derek O'Brien released a video supporting him. 'Someone needed to call this government out. Someone needed to hold this government accountable. Someone needed to ask five direct questions,' he said, adding that the government's silence on these critical issues was unacceptable. Abhishek was a part of the delegation led by JD(U) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, and as part of his tour, travelled on May 21 to Japan, followed by South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. The other members of his delegation included former diplomat Mohan Kumar; BJP MPs Brij Lal, Aparajita Sarangi, Pradan Baruah and Hemang Joshi; and CPI(M) MP John Brittas. Abhishek was not initially among the delegation members announced by the government, which had instead chosen cricketer-turned-politician and Baharampur MP Yusuf Pathan to represent the TMC. After criticising the Centre for not consulting the TMC, party chief Mamata Banerjee withdrew Pathan's name and sent Abhishek as his replacement.
