Search for missing girl, 15, feared drowned in East River enters second day
A desperate search for a missing 15-year-old girl feared drowned in New York City's East River under the Roosevelt Island Bridge entered its second day Saturday. After a night of heavy rains, NYPD scuba divers were expected to go back into the waters between Queens and Roosevelt Island on Saturday and attempt to recover the girl's body, officials said. The girl was sitting on the rocks, wearing a bathing suit with a flower pattern on it, when she fell into the river, police said Saturday. The teen is believed to be from the Upper East Side, WABC Eyewitness News reported. The teen entered the East River at about 12:15 p.m. on Friday, cops said. When she didn't resurface, a friend she was with called 911. Responding officers found a bookbag near the water that they believe belongs to the teen, who has not been publicly identified. Cops have not recovered any bodies in the East River in the last 24 hours, a police spokesman said. The currents in the East River are quite strong, and may have been one of the causes why the Mexican Navy ship Cuauhtémoc crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge earlier this month. 'Our currents and tides are very strong,' Adams said when the Cuauhtémoc crashed. 'People don't realize that people fall in the river by the Statue of Liberty and find themselves in the Bronx somewhere.'

Couple stabs each other during bloody fight in Queens apartment
A Queens couple stabbed each other during a violent fight inside a Queens apartment early Saturday, officials said. It was one of two bloody blade attacks that took place in the city within five hours, the NYPD said. The two victims, a 27-year-old man and a 24-year-old man, were inside their apartment at NYCHA's Pomonok Houses on Jewel Ave. near Parsons Blvd. in Flushing at about 4 a.m. when they started arguing with each other, cops said. As the fight continued, one of the men pulled a knife, cops said. The two stabbed each other as they fought over the knife. When cops arrived, each man was suffering from multiple stab wounds to the body, cops said. EMS rushed both victims to New York Presbyterian-Queens, where the younger man was rushed into surgery and listed in critical but stable condition. The older victim was also listed in stable condition. The knife was recovered as detectives determined what sparked the fight. There were no prior domestic incidents at the apartment, a police source with knowledge of the case said. In an unrelated incident five hours earlier, two men, both 53, were found slashed inside he basement of a Sunset Park, Brooklyn, home on 58th St. near Seventh Ave. One of the victims was slashed in the neck, cops said. The second man had a deep gash to his head. Both were taken to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn where the one slashed in the neck was listed in critical condition. The other man is expected to recover. No arrests have been made in either case. The bloody back to back attacks come as felony assaults in the city were down, but only by less than 1%. As of May 25, cops had investigated 11,066 felony assaults, 21 fewer than this time last year, cops said.

Stop cyclist crime The bikes are totally out of control in New York City today ('E-bike danger an e-emergency,' May 29). The bike lanes next to the curb are borderline unsafe. Bikers ride at extreme speeds using gasoline and electric motors, while being oblivious to pedestrians and any traffic laws whatsoever. How many times must one see them riding on the sidewalk? Or going the wrong way on a one-way street? Riding against traffic? Running full stop signs and red lights? Advertisement How many vehicular accidents have they caused and just kept going? How many pedestrians have they injured or killed with no consequences? They think they can do anything they want with zero consequences from the NYPD because elected officials protect them. He was in high school, working part-time to help support his mother and siblings and showing up to his immigration hearings. The government changed the rules, and he is now locked up.
