Juneteenth is coming up on June 19, giving Americans a chance to celebrate the country's second independence day.
The name of the holiday combines "June" and "nineteenth." It is also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Juneteenth Independence Day and Black Independence Day, according to the Congressional Research Service.
Juneteenth was first observed in 1866, but the holiday spread across the country as African Americans migrated away from the South. More than half of the states now recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday, according to the Pew Research Center. In 2016, the Arizona Legislature passed a law commemorating Juneteenth with a day of observance.

On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in the Galveston area of Texas learned of their freedom.
The news came two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, and more than two months after Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865, bringing an end to the Civil War.
Enslavers were responsible for telling the enslaved they were free, but some ignored the directive.
This event gave rise to the Juneteenth holiday.
Juneteenth is a USPS holiday, according to the agency's website, meaning mail will not be delivered and post offices will be closed for retail transactions on June 19.
Priority Mail Express is available 365 days a year, including federal holidays.
UPS pickup and delivery services will be available on Juneteenth. UPS Store locations may be closed, according the company's website.

Juneteenth is a Federal Reserve bank holiday, USA TODAY reports, meaning most banks, such as Wells Fargo, Citibank, Bank of America, Truist and others, will also be closed on June 19.
All of FedEx's pickup and delivery services will be available on Juneteenth, according to the company's website.
FedEx Custom Critical, however, is available 24/7, according to the company.
Walmart, Target and Costco will be open on Juneteenth, however, it's recommended to check with your local store for specific hours, as they may vary by location. Here are more grocery stores that plan to keep its doors open on June 19:

In addition to retail stores, fast food restaurants like McDonald's and Chick-fil-A will also remain open.

You can find the serial number on either the bottom or middle-right portion of a label on the back of the minifridge. These were sold in various colors, including black, white, blue and pink. It's advised that if you own one of these models you should stop using it immediately, then reach out to AstroAI for a free replacement. In order to get that free replacement, all you have to do is send the company a photo of the recalled minifridge, clearly showing the model number and serial number. Write "Recalled" on the minifridge in permanent marker before you take the snap. Peninsula man's ministry credited for lifting people out of homelessness for nearly 3 decades
Peter Stiehler rises before dawn on weekdays, cooking and serving a hearty breakfast so dozens of people experiencing homelessness in San Mateo County can start their day right. "I find when you're in service to people, your life is richer," said Stiehler. He and his volunteers also give away toiletries and provide showers at St. Bruno's Catholic Church in San Bruno. It's the ministry of the Catholic Worker Hospitality House, the nonprofit Stiehler and his wife, Kate Chatfield, started 29 years ago. The group provides temporary shelter and evening meals for six people at the church, plus permanent affordable housing for a dozen others at two boarding houses in San Bruno and South San Francisco. Stiehler lifts people up in their time of greatest need. "How I got into this work in the first place was I wanted a way to live out my faith," he told CBS News Bay Area. Janice Dahl said Stiehler helped her and her husband get back on their feet. They stayed at the shelter and now rent a room at the Catholic Worker boarding house. Dahl now works at the shelter, paying forward Stiehler's kindness. "He's my hero, basically. He got me off the streets," Dahl said. "He's like my angel that I didn't think I had." Melinda Lent is also grateful that Peter offered her a place to live at the hospitality house after she'd lived for months in her car. "He's like a lifesaver. I was out there in the car in the street and he said, 'Come on in, I have some space,' let me stay here. And now I'm housed," Lent said, smiling. Whether he's clearing the room or cleaning the dishes, Stiehler is often on the move, leading by example. The Catholic Worker Hospitality House relies on volunteers and private donations, and does not accept government support. But he does find support and fulfillment building community - helping people go from despair to hope in starting over. "I get to see that change. I get to be part of it. How's it feel? Tabitha the tabby cat is a versatile kitty who wants affection sometimes, but prefers independence other times. Adopting her would be the best of both worlds! Sadly, she's waited for years for the right person to take a chance on her, but Fran is determined for that to change very soon. What a tough cookie! Living at an animal shelter for years takes a toll on many animals, but Tabitha is still a curious, friendly, and well-rounded cat despite staying there for so long. Fran's friendship and their daily routines play a large role in the kitty's wellbeing, but nothing will be better for her than moving into her forever home. As Fran explained, this cat knows what she wants, and sometimes, she wants to be left alone. Everyone feels that way sometimes! Tabby values independence and boundaries as well as connection, and she needs a parent or family who understands kitty queen also prefers to be the only pet in the general vicinity. No dog siblings, please! She may be able to live peacefully with other cats if both felines have their own spaces, but even young children can be stressful for this rescue cat.
