Six-year-old boy dead and two young girls in hospital after tragic crash
A young boy is dead and a girl is in a serious condition in hospital following a tragic crash in southern NSW.
About 4.10pm May 13, emergency services were called to Towamba Road, Nullica, 10km south-west of Eden after a dual-cab utility and Kenworth tipper truck collided.
A six-year-old boy, who had been a passenger in the utility, died at the scene.
The driver, a 31-year-old man, and two girls - aged two and eight - in the same vehicle, suffered multiple injuries.
The driver was airlifted to Canberra Hospital while the two girls were airlifted to Sydney Children's Hospital.
In a statement to media on May 14, Detective Inspector Jason Hogan of the Crash Investigation Unit, said one of the girls was being treated by specialists at Randwick in a "serious but stable" condition.
All three surviving ute occupants remained in hospital as of noon May 14.
The driver of the truck, aged 52, was taken to South-East Regional Hospital at Bega for mandatory testing and to be treated for the effects of shock. He had since been released," Detective Inspector Hogan said.
"The circumstances will be investigated by the Crash Investigation Unit for a full and detailed account of what happened," he said.
"It's a road that runs about 10km southwest of Eden, a thoroughfare through state forest. The reasons a car and truck were in that area will be part of the investigation.
"We have nothing to suggest the road conditions were dangerous."
Detective Inspector Hogan said the crash was "a terrible tragedy that we need to avoid".
As inquiries continue, police were appealing for anyone with information or dashcam footage of the crash, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Eden Fire and Rescue NSW members, alongside multiple first responder agencies, attended the crash on Towamba Road and were faced with the critical and confronting scenes.
A Facebook post by FRNSW Station 286 said firefighters worked through the night, completing their duties about 3.30am Wednesday.
"Due to the severity of the accident and the condition of the roadway, the scene was handed over to NSW Police, Towamba Road remained closed overnight and was reopened later this morning once it was deemed safe for public use," they posted on the brigade's Facebook page.
Eden Fire and Rescue also had something to say about the social media commentary that spread quickly following initial reports of the crash.
"Following the incident, some [Station] 286 Eden members raised concerns about insensitive commentary posted in a local Facebook group.
"A young community member, recognising the emotional toll on those affected, respectfully requested the group administrator to remove the post, this was actioned promptly.
"FRNSW 286 Eden extends its thanks to the group administrators for their discretion and community awareness.
"We remind the public that those involved in this tragic accident are not just names on a page, they are people with families, friends, and loved ones who are now facing immense emotional and psychological challenges in the days and weeks ahead.
"As investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing and led by NSW Police, we urge everyone to consider the human impact before posting speculation or commentary online. If you wouldn't say it directly to those involved or their families, please think twice before sharing it publicly.
The members of Eden FRNSW Station 286 also expressed their sincere condolences to the family and friends of those involved.
"To the families, friends, and the broader community affected by this tragic incident.
"Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with you during this incredibly difficult time. We understand that no words can ease the pain of such a loss, but please know that our hearts are with you.
"To those who were injured, we extend our sincere wishes for a full and speedy recovery. We hope for strength and healing in the days ahead.

‘Cheeky, kind' man killed in horrific East Freo truck crash
The devastated family of an e-scooter rider who died when he was hit by a truck in East Fremantle has spoken of the 'free-spirited, fun-loving, kind and empathetic soul' they lost last week. Kevin Sanders, 31, was killed after the scooter he was riding collided with a truck at the intersection of Canning and Stirling highways late on May 28. Mr Sanders' cousin Kerrie Farrell told PerthNow the pair had grown up together in their nanna's house in Bullsbrook. 'He was so cheeky but the most loving, caring and happiest person I know,' Ms Farrell said through tears. 'You could be in the worst mood and that man would never let anyone be sad, he would light up every room he walked into.' His family said he lit up every room he walked into. Credit: Facebook Mr Sanders had a passion for fixing electric scooters and dedicated his time to tinkering with them when he wasn't working as a landscaper, often sharing YouTube videos to help others. His family said he was very hardworking but would want to be remembered for his humour. 'Cracking jokes and making people smile was important to Kevin because it would fill his cup,' Melanie Farrell — another of Mr Sanders' cousins — said. 'He will forever be remembered as the most adventurous, caring soul that had time for anyone and everyone.' Mr Sanders' mother Suzanne Sanders posted a social media tribute to her son just two days after the accident. Kevin you were the goofiest, funniest young man. Always laughing, making others laugh and having a joke. 'It is with immeasurable sadness that I write this post today,' it read. 'Our biggest boy sadly passed away after a vehicle accident on Wednesday night. 'Kevin you were the goofiest, funniest young man. Always laughing, making others laugh and having a joke, not to mention waking me up at crazy times to visit. 'Loved by so many and will be missed more than you could ever imagine. 'Rest peacefully, sweetheart, we love you xx.' Friend Michael Styles had been on a ride with the 31-year-old earlier that fateful night and posted a video of the group riding through the streets. Mr Styles wrote on social media that he could not believe Mr Sanders was gone and that they had been riding together just half an hour earlier. 'Can't believe you're gone, just can't believe (I) saw and (hung) out that night, only 30mins before going home from the group ride,' he wrote. Kevin Sanders. Credit: Supplied 'Ya going to be missed by a lot definitely made us laugh a lot, and so many rides together r.i.p man just wish it was just a bad dream miss ya man (sic).' Another friend, Rhys Scott Maher, posted videos of Mr Sanders riding his e-scooter, writing that he did not deserve to die. A nurse who was on her way home from a nearby aged care facility also spoke of the moment she tried to save Mr Sanders after she saw him lying on the road. 'I came out of my car to save his life, but then I saw him, he was badly injured,' she said. 'I am so sad for him and his family. 'I was literally crying last night . . . I couldn't save that man.' Mr Sanders' cousins said they are 'eternally grateful' to the nurse who tried to save him. Recent figures provided to Parliament show four people have been killed riding an e-scooter in the first five months of the year — higher than the three in 2024, and just one death the year prior. A pedestrian in Perth also died this week after being struck by an e-scooter on Saturday night. Thanh Phan, 51, died later from critical injuries received in the incident. Alicia Kemp, a 24-year-old visiting from the UK, is accused of striking Mr Phan at the intersection of Murray and King streets about 8.40pm on Saturday. On Tuesday one of her initial charges was upgraded to dangerous driving occasioning death under the influence of alcohol. She also faces a charge of dangerous driving occasioning bodily harm under the influence of alcohol after her 26-year-old female pillion passenger suffered non life-threatening injuries in the crash and was treated in hospital.

Housemate arrested amid missing girl investigation
A housemate of missing teenager Pheobe Bishop has been arrested over the 17-year-old's "suspicious" disappearance. James Wood, 34, has been taken into custody, almost three weeks after Pheobe missed a flight and vanished in southern Queensland. Pheobe was last seen near Bundaberg airport about 8.30am on May 15 after booking a trip to Western Australia to see her boyfriend. CCTV footage indicated Pheobe never arrived at the airport terminal, police said. Police on Wednesday said a man was in custody but no charges had been laid. "A 34-year-old man ... is assisting police with enquiries as part of ongoing investigations into the disappearance of Pheobe Bishop," a statement said. Police earlier on Wednesday said they had scaled back their search for Pheobe after combing the Gin Gin area where the teenager lived with Wood and a woman on a property. The Gin Gin property near Bundaberg and a grey Hyundai ix35, thought to have been used to take Pheobe to the airport, were declared crime scenes soon after her disappearance. Wood and Pheobe's other housemate Tanika Kristan Bromley have since been charged with weapons offences. Bromley was granted bail at Bundaberg Magistrates Court to reappear on June 23 while Wood was issued a notice to appear on June 13. Police said the weapons charges were unrelated to Pheobe's disappearance and there was no suggestion Bromley or Wood were involved. Pheobe's mother Kylie Johnson has been pleading for information since her daughter's disappearance, documenting her family's heartache on social media. In her latest post Ms Johnson wondered if her life would be the same. "Starting day 20 with you still missing Pheobe," she posted on Facebook on Wednesday. "I don't know if life will ever be the same again? I don't know if I will ever look at the world the same way that I did before May 15th. "What I do know is that people have information on where you are Phee and we need that reported to police." In a video statement released by Queensland Police at the weekend, Ms Johnson said she still held onto hope but had to consider the possibility her daughter wasn't coming home. "This is a pain no person or family should ever have to experience," she said. The police search initially focused on Good Night Scrub national park, an hour's drive from Bundaberg airport, with homicide detectives, cadaver dogs and divers called in. Some items believed to be linked to the investigation were seized for forensic examination. The search revealed evidence might have been moved from the national park before police arrived. Police then focused on Gin Gin where Pheobe lived with Wood and Bromley. The community rallied around the missing teen's family during the search with the "Leave the Lights On for Pheobe" campaign. Gin Gin locals posted photos on social media of their front lights switched on "to guide Pheobe home". Anyone with information, footage or sightings of the grey Hyundai between May 15 and May 18 in the Gin Gin area has been urged to contact police. Pheobe is about 180cm tall with a pale complexion, long hair that has been dyed red and hazel eyes. She was last seen carrying luggage, wearing a green tank top and grey sweatpants.
