Indian Women's Hockey team gears up for crucial FIH Pro League matches in Europe
London, June 13 (UNI) The Indian Women's Hockey Team is set to kick off the second and final leg
of the FIH Pro League 2024-25, facing Australia, Argentina, Belgium and China in the European leg.
Currently ranked 6th with 9 points, the team will play Australia on June 14 and 15, and Argentina on June 17 and 18, at London's Lee Valley Hockey & Tennis Centre.
Talking about the upcoming matches, Indian Captain Salima Tete said, "Our aim is to play well and defeat the teams that are ranked above us in this leg of the FIH Pro League. To prepare for our matches, we have been recording our performances and reviewing them so we can not only improve upon our weaknesses but also know where we are doing well to continue upon those areas during our matches."
After their London matches, the Indian team will head to Antwerp to face Belgium on June 21 and 22, followed by their final two FIH Pro League (Women) matches against China in Berlin on June 28 and 29.
Meanwhile, the Indian Men's Hockey Team will face Australia in Antwerp on June 14 and 15. Ranked 5th with 15 points, the team is looking to bounce back against Australia and gain crucial points to stay in contention for the top three positions.
Indian Men's Hockey Team Captain Harmanpreet Singh emphasized the importance of winning against Australia, saying, "A win against Australia will be very critical for us, as it will not only help us gain crucial points but also give the team a winning momentum. We've had a few close games in the last four matches, and while we have been on the losing end, we want to change that and get some wins under our belts."

Gambhir flies back due to family emergency
New Delhi: A week before India begins their five-match Test series against England in Leeds, head coach Gautam Gambhir has flown back home due to a family emergency. Gambhir had been with the Indian team at Beckenham ahead of their intra-squad practice match starting on Friday. 'Yes it came to the light yesterday that Gambhir would be flying back home due to an important family emergency related to his mother. As of now, we believe that Gambhir has already linked up with his family in New Delhi. 'Keeping in mind the current situation, it's not known yet about when he would join the India team ahead of the Test series' commencement,' said sources aware of development to IANS on Friday. In Gambhir's absence, alongside batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate and fielding coach T Dilip will help the Indian team prepare for the upcoming Test series against Ben Stokes-led England, which starts at Headingley. The Test tour of England will also be right-handed batter Shubman Gill's first assignment as the captain of the Indian team, following the retirement of Rohit Sharma last month. At 25 years and 258 days, Gill will also become the fifth-youngest cricketer to captain India in Tests. Shooting World Cup: Suruchi enters 10m air pistol final
Suruchi Inder Singh stormed into the final of 10m Air Pistol women at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) Shooting World Cup (rifle/pistol), while Paris Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker missed out to make the cut here on Friday. Suruchi scored 588 with 20 inner 10s to be placed second in the qualification, behind Yao Qianxun of China, who topped the qualification chart with Qualification World Record Junior of 589 - 21x. Meanwhile, Manu failed to make the final after finishing 25th after shooting 574 - 14x, while another Indian in the fray, Palak, finished 36th with 570 - 18x. Interestingly, Suruchi had pipped Manu in the women's 10m air pistol event at the ISSF World Cup 2025 Lima in Peru to win the gold in April this year. Suruchi shot a total of 243.6 in the final to beat compatriot Manu, a two-time Olympic medallist who shot 242.3 to grab the silver. This was Suruchi's second successive gold in the women's 10m air pistol event at ISSF World Cups this year. The 19-year-old from Jhajjar in Haryana won the gold medal in Buenos Aires in early April to mark her maiden podium finish at a senior World Cup.
