Kolkata: A Delhi-based fish trader, Nazim Chauhan, was allegedly kidnapped from Sashan in North 24 Parganas on Tuesday for a ransom of Rs 1 crore. He was rescued within hours and three persons accused of the kidnapping were arrested due to prompt action by an app cab driver.
Police said Chauhan arrived at Kolkata airport from Delhi Tuesday morning and took an app cab to Basirhat. On the way, when the cab passed through Sandaliya area under Shasan police station, Chauhan asked the cab driver to stop to step out for a break.
"The moment Chauhan stepped out of the cab, an SUV arrived. The trader was forcibly taken away in the vehicle towards Charghat, near the India-Bangladesh border at Ghojadanga in Basirhat," a senior police officer of the Barasat district police said.
The cab driver, Mohammed Miraz, drove straight to Shasan police station and reported the incident. Based on the information provided and the trader's phone number, cops traced the victim's location and conducted a swift operation at Charghat. Chauhan was successfully rescued and the three alleged kidnappers, Samad Mondal (Charghat panchayat president), Sajjan Alam and Jamal Uddin, were arrested.

ED officer accused of graft in Kerala transferred to Shillong

KOCHI: Shekhar Kumar, assistant director with Kochi unit of Enforcement Directorate (ED), who was arraigned as an accused by Kerala vigilance and anti-corruption bureau (VACB) in a corruption case, has been transferred to Shillong as part of a nationwide reshuffle of ED officers. Kumar was named as the first accused in a case registered by VACB based on a complaint by a Kollam-based businessman, Aneesh Babu, who was allegedly asked to pay a bribe of Rs 2 crore to evade an ED investigation. However, the state agency did not arrest or question him. Vigilance had arrested Wilson Varghese, Mukesh Kumar and a chartered accountant, Ranjit Warrier, in the case. The complainant, a cashew trader, was asked to appear before the ED through a summons in 2024 in connection with a money laundering probe. Subsequently, Wilson called up Aneesh Babu and allegedly told him that he would be off the hook if he paid Rs 2 crore to the ED official. The complainant was asked to pay Rs 2 lakh in cash on May 15 this year, and vigilance caught Wilson red-handed while accepting the money. ED's special task force in Delhi later launched a probe into the bribery allegations against its official. ED sources rubbished Babu's allegations, saying it was an attempt to trigger a media trial with an intent to malign the image of the agency and deflect attention from the ongoing PMLA investigation against him.

DMRC staffers hit in ‘revenge' crash in Gururgam; probe underway

Two Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) employees were critically injured after a car allegedly driven by a drunk man rammed into their motorcycle in a suspected act of revenge, following an altercation over rash driving on MG Road near Sector-28, police said on Tuesday. The victims, Umesh Kumar, 33, and Krishan Kumar, 30, are senior customer relation assistants posted on the Yellow Line (Line-II). Umesh hails from Rewari and lives in Sector-28, while Krishan, originally from Jaipur, resides in Sikanderpur. The incident occurred around 1.30am on June 4 opposite Sahara Mall. According to investigators, a Mahindra XUV 3XO bearing a Delhi registration number hit their Royal Enfield motorcycle. Police said Umesh sustained six fractures—three in his right hand and three in his facial bones—while Krishan suffered deep cuts and bruises. Umesh underwent hand and facial plastic surgery at a private hospital in Sector-38, where he remained admitted for over 10 days. He was able to file a complaint only on Monday. The FIR was registered at DLF Phase-I police station under Sections 125 (act endangering life or personal safety of others), 125(a) (causing hurt by such act), and 281 (rash driving) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Speaking to HT, Umesh said he and Krishan had just dealt with a woman's suicide case at Chattarpur metro station on June 3 and left office past 1am. They were heading to buy liquor in Sikanderpur when the car with five occupants first hit them and fled. 'I followed them. I honked and flashed the dipper, but they didn't stop,' Umesh said. He managed to intercept the car at a U-turn near Sahara Mall but fled when the occupants attacked him and Krishan. 'I rode against traffic to escape. The car chased and hit us again. I lost consciousness and only woke up in the hospital,' he added. Inspector Rajesh Bagri, station house officer of DLF Phase-I police station, said the impact disabled the car after it crashed into a footpath. 'Its axle broke and a tyre exploded. A patrolling van reached immediately, and the occupants fled,' he said. Both vehicles were seized. Police have served a notice to the Delhi-based car owner and are scanning nearby CCTV footage to identify the driver.
