(WFRV) – With less than a week to go before the annual sturgeon spearing opener, authorities in Fond du Lac County say they are keeping an eye on the ice conditions of Lake Winnebago.
According to a release from the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office, while deputies are monitoring the ice conditions, they are asking anyone planning to venture out onto Lake Winnebago or any other body of water to do the same.
Street closures have residents concerned whether front yard parking will be possible for NFL Draft
Officials say that while there is an estimated foot to more of ice well off the shore, getting to that thicker ice has proved to be a challenge yet again this year.
There have already been multiple responses made by the Sheriff's Office to reports of multiple vehicles, ATVs, and UTVs going through the ice.
This includes a recent event on February 1 where a and another man was treated for hypothermic-related symptoms after their UTV crashed into the water through an active crack on Lake Winnebago.
Through recently taken drone photos, paired side-by-side with FLIR images differentiating heat in red (open warm water), plenty of large water and cracks can be seen out on the lake.
While the conditions do change daily, officials say the local fishing clubs do a good job monitoring ice conditions and providing updates on social media.
Anyone looking to venture out onto the waters of Lake Winnebago should make sure they are prepared for the constantly changing conditions by checking those local fishing clubs' social media pages for any potential challenges before heading out.
Stay safe and good luck to all the fishermen and spearers!

Department of Natural Resources warning Wisconsinites over statewide Air Quality Advisory due to Canadian wildfire smoke

(WFRV) – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said that a state-wide Air Quality Advisory is set to begin at 6 a.m. on Friday, and is urging residents to be cautious as a result. The Advisory is due to the smoke coming from Canadian wildfires in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. The Cool Place in Pulaski seeks community help to stay afloat amidst business slowdown Hazy skies and particle pollution will likely cause poor conditions for most, if not all, of the state, the DNR said. The DNR's release said to expect the following: The initial round of smoke is expected in or around northwestern Wisconsin on Thursday afternoon, and pushing southeast throughout the evening On Friday morning, heavier smoke is forecast to come from the north and push south The advisory at this time is set to expire at 6 a.m. Saturday, but the smoke impact could continue in some spots Rain turns to thunderstorms for Friday The Air Quality Index is expected to reach the 'Orange' level, which is unhealthy for sensitive individuals, across much of the state. It is also possible that it may rise to the 'Red' level of unhealthy. Individuals should be wary of symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath. If symptoms arise, people should take a break or go inside. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
