Iraqi Airways Advances Towards Lifting EU Aviation Ban
By John Lee.
Iraq's Ministry of Transport has reaffirmed its commitment to meeting the International Air Transport Association (IATA) requirements as part of ongoing efforts to lift the European airspace ban on Iraqi Airways.
According to a statement from the Ministry's media office, Iraqi Airways is working towards obtaining the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification in 2025, a key step towards lifting the European ban. This will be followed by securing the Third Country Operator (TCO) certificate, allowing the national carrier to resume flights in European airspace.
The Ministry confirmed its adherence to the required timelines in coordination with IATA and is actively addressing key aviation standards, including: Fleet standardisation and reactivation of grounded aircraft.
Enhancing specialised aviation crews and diversifying service providers.
Implementing aircraft performance monitoring systems.
Upgrading quality assurance processes to meet all compliance requirements.
Modernising operational manuals and introducing the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) system.
Adopting global aircraft maintenance and planning systems, with agreements signed with foreign service providers for ground handling and cargo operations.
The Ministry also noted that some requirements extend beyond Iraqi Airways to include the Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA).
During a recent meeting with Prime Minister Mohammed S. Al-Sudani and Transport Minister Razzaq Muhaibis Al-Saadawi, IATA Vice President Kamil Al-Awadhi confirmed that Iraq has made significant progress, with 56% completion of the corrective action plan for lifting the ban.
The statement highlighted that while past progress towards lifting the EU ban was minimal, Iraqi Airways is now making tangible advancements in coordination with IATA's technical team.

Iraqi Minister Warns of $200-300 Oil
By John Lee. Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Fuad Hussein (pictured), has cautioned that the continuation of Israeli and Iranian military operations may lead to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which could result in the loss of up to five million barrels per day of oil exports from the Gulf and Iraq. He warned that this could drive oil prices to $200-300 per barrel, exacerbating the global inflation crisis and negatively impacting both producing and importing countries, including Iraq. The Minister made his comments during a phone call with Germany's Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr. Johann Wadephul. (Source: MoFA)

Baghdad braces for crisis with food security strategy
Shafaq News/ On Monday, Iraq's Ministry of Trade unveiled a comprehensive emergency plan to safeguard national food security in the face of potential disruptions linked to the Iran-Israel war. Ministry spokesperson Mohammed Hanoun stated that the package includes contracts to import substantial quantities of rice, along with measures to secure domestic supplies of sugar and cooking oil. The plan also outlines steps to safeguard national storage facilities against climate-related risks, helping preserve the country's strategic reserves. To ease potential supply chain pressures, the Iraqi government has introduced temporary customs exemptions on essential food imports and lifted administrative restrictions during emergencies. The ministry has also increased wheat procurement prices to support farmers and reduce dependency on imports in case of global trade disruptions, adding, 'The ministry will distribute food aid to low-income families and other vulnerable groups, in addition to doubling the items included in Iraq's food ration card during peak crises.' On the enforcement front, the ministry has activated emergency monitoring efforts, deploying 'round-the-clock field teams' to supervise markets, prevent price manipulation, and combat hoarding. Citizens are urged to report violations through the 'Raqibni' (Monitor Me) platform, with the ministry promising 'immediate and direct responses.'

In call with UK's Lammy: Iraqi FM warns of wider war
Shafaq News/ Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein called on the international community to take steps to stop airspace violations and prevent escalation in the region, during a phone call with British Foreign Secretary David Lammy, on Monday. According to a statement from Iraq's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hussein underscored that Israel's repeated breaches of Iraqi airspace represent a grave violation of Iraq's sovereignty and international law, warning that the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran could trigger severe regional and global consequences if not contained. The Iraqi FM also stressed the importance of the UK's diplomatic role in de-escalation efforts, either through the European tripartite coordination with France and Germany or in tandem with the United States. For his part, Lammy affirmed the importance of preventing interference by armed groups and reiterated that the UK had not taken part in any military operations. Lammy also noted that London was coordinating closely with Paris, Berlin, and Washington to unify positions on the crisis, urging all parties to return to negotiations over Iran's nuclear program. He warned against attacks on US or British forces in the region, regardless of the perpetrator, adding that any closure of the Strait of Hormuz would pose a major economic threat to the UK and Europe, likely driving inflation higher.
