Goliad honors assistant principal for winning award
Apr. 7—Goliad Elementary School honored Assistant Principal Samantha Natividad-Ramos Monday for winning the TEPSA Region 18 Assistant Principal of the Year Award.
TEPSA stands for Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association.
Students, teachers, staff and families filled the auditorium to celebrate her. The Odessa High School Mariachis also paid tribute.
Students told her how much they appreciated her and offered hugs. She also received a bouquet of paper flowers along with her plaque.
Students said there are a lot of things that make Natividad-Ramos stand out as an assistant principal.
She's confident and helps students feel confident and strong.
Natividad-Ramos supports students at school, works hard, puts others before herself, shows how much she cares about the kids and makes them feel like they belong.
She said she does the job, not for the awards, but because of everyone in the room and thanked them for making Goliad a great place to be and making it easy to come to work every day.
Natividad-Ramos said she knew something was going on because "it was so secretive."
She has been with Ector County ISD for 15 years, seven of them as an assistant principal. This is her fourth year at Goliad.
"It really is an honor and a blessing. I was definitely taken by surprise. It's not something that I was expecting. I didn't go into education" for the glory, but to make an impact on student lives, Natividad-Ramos said.
"This is just a perk to it," she added.
The stereotypical assistant principal is mean.
"I hope that I have changed that. I try to, like I said, just make an impact. I know a lot of our students come from hard backgrounds, and so I ... want to be that change, that person, that they look back on, and ... think, you know what? She believed in me. She's the reason I kept going. ... So I ... try to motivate students as much as possible to be successful," Natividad-Ramos said.
She added that having the students come up and say things about her made her cry. The mariachis behind her also teared up.

Johnson helps Giants find spark in emotional win vs. Padres originally appeared on NBC Sports Bay Area SAN FRANCISCO — Standing on second base and staring straight into the Giants' dugout, Heliot Ramos pounded his chest twice and finished his fiery moment of pure excitement with the three best words in sports: 'Let's f–king go!' Advertisement Ramos had just hammered the hardest-hit ball of the night, a one-hopper off the left-field wall with the bases loaded to tie the game at five runs apiece in the bottom of the seventh inning. The Giants once had trailed the San Diego Padres — a team they hadn't beaten in four tries this season and had a seven-game losing streak against since September of last season — 5-0 before coming back to earn a 6-5 win Wednesday night at Oracle Park. Jung Hoo Lee's sacrifice fly right after Ramos' double gave San Francisco the lead, and the bullpen slammed the door shut on San Diego. The talk of the town had been the Giants' reeling offense, leading to a major roster shakeup earlier in the day. They needed a jolt; a spark had to be lit. Multiple players had a hand in igniting a wick and lighting a fire in front of the home fans. Advertisement None brought pure adulation quite like Ramos' swing after the seventh-inning stretch. Honestly, it was an emotional at-bat. It was an emotional game, for sure.' The Giants on Wednesday morning designated LaMonte Wade Jr. for assignment as part of multiple roster moves. They had lost the first two games of the series against the Padres, almost exclusively because of a sputtering offense that hadn't scored five or more runs since May 16. Ramos, their All-Star left fielder, is supposed to be a bat the Giants can lean on, and San Francisco did when it mattered most. The same goes with Matt Chapman. Defense always will come first for the glove manning the hot corner, but as the Giants' cleanup hitter, Chapman also has a spotlight on him at the plate. Prior to the Giants scoring three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game and take the lead, Chapman got them within striking distance the inning before with a two-run homer that nearly was erased from the unfriendly confines of his home park. Chapman's blast just barely cleared the left-field wall, literally bouncing on top of it and back into the field. He felt like he got enough of it off the bat, but there's no telling unless it's a no-doubter in San Francisco. The rest of the Giants' big-name bats — Ramos, Chapman and Lee — came up big. Yet it was a fresh face who had just arrived from Sacramento that lit a flame as much as anybody else. He had eight people in the stands for his Giants debut, including his mom, dad, brother, sister and a couple of friends. With his speed, Fernando Tatis Jr. almost was assured to score from first base when Luis Arráez launched a ball 372 feet into the right-center gap with a .520 expected batting average. Johnson opened his hips, changed his cleats for track spikes and ran down a ball that was waiting to bounce off the warning track. 'I got to go. I have to run,' Johnson remembers telling himself. 'He hit it — we were playing kind of in — I was running and I'm just like, 'I have to run. I have to go.' That was my only thought: Go get to the ball.' Nevada County Sheriff's Office K9 helps seize narcotics and a firearm in Grass Valley
( —A K9 search led to an arrest and seizure of narcotics and a firearm on Tuesday afternoon. According to the Nevada County Sheriff's Office, with the help of the Grass Valley Police Department, two individuals were arrested for multiple serious drug offenses at around 4:30 p.m. following an investigative stop in the parking lot of a business on Hughes Road. NCSO stated that the suspects have been identified as Kalen Turner, 34, of Nevada City, and Katriena Mulligan, 24, of Grass Valley. NCSO Deputy Ramos and her K9 partner Riggs were on patrol going down East Main Street in Grass Valley, where she saw a suspicious vehicle backing into a car wash but not utilizing the facility. The deputy recognized the vehicle from a prior criminal investigation of drug and property crimes in Nevada County, according to officials. Deputy Ramos conducted a visual surveillance of the vehicle at the business and contacted GVPD since it was within their jurisdiction. Rep. Josh Harder announces legislation to stop invasion of 'stinky' golden mussels NCSO stated that GVPD officers and investigators arrived in the area and assisted Deputy Ramos with observation of the vehicle, which was a 2013 gray Ford Focus. After 20 minutes, the NCSO deputy and GVPD officers saw Mulligan arrive driving a 2007 white Scion and contact Turner, the driver of the Ford Focus, according to NCSO. Both of them drove to a convenience store on Hughes Road, where they parked together behind the businesses and away from the view of the road. NCSO said, 'Detectives were able to position themselves to continue to watch Turner and Mulligan, who then proceeded to complete a 'hand-to-hand' transaction witnessed by the officers.' NCSO Deputy Ramos and GVPD officers conducted a stop on the suspects' vehicles in the parking lot, where narcotics and drug paraphernalia were seen in plain view, according to authorities. At this time, both of the vehicles were searched, yielding the discovery and seizure of fentanyl and paraphernalia from each of the cars and in addition to indicia commonly used in illicit drug sales. This also included a scale and packaging materials in Turner's car, according to NCSO. K9 Riggs is trained and POST certified in narcotics detection and was deployed to search the vehicles, where he detected narcotics in both of the vehicles, NCSO stated. Riggs also alerted to the engine compartment of Turner's vehicle, where crews found 90 rounds of ammunition and a handgun under the hood. Both of the drivers, Mulligan and Turner, were booked into the Wayne Brown Correctional Facility on multiple drug charges, NCSO stated. Authorities said that Turner is being charged with being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition, as well as possession of a controlled substance with two or more prior convictions. At this time, there was no mention of what Mulligan is being charged with.
