A meal-prep shop, a 24/7 vet clinic and two restaurants are new to Wauwatosa, Brookfield
A restaurant serving Thai and Japanese food, an emergency vet clinic and a pop-up seafood spot all have opened in Wauwatosa and Brookfield. Here's what to know about these new spots in the west suburbs.
Krysta Hutton has worked as a personal chef and business owner over the last 14 years, cooking for her meal prep and catering company Simple Eats in rented-out kitchens and clients' homes. On Feb. 14, she entered a new era and opened Simple Eats' brand-new storefront on North Avenue in Wauwatosa.
Simple Eats, 7225 North Ave., has a kitchen in the back for Hutton to make the meals, while the front has become a shop selling flowers, cards, and locally-sourced gifts including pottery, lotions and plants.
Simple Eats sells about 1,000 meals a week to nearly 500 people, Hutton told the Journal Sentinel. Ingredients are mostly organic, according to her website.
Customers order weekly, placing orders by Sunday on premade meals from a new menu that goes live every Wednesday. Orders are picked up at various distribution sites around the Wauwatosa area on Tuesday.
Any leftover food is now made into dishes Hutton sells in the storefront to avoid food waste and offer food at a discounted rate of 4 to 5 dollars less than their original price. This is helpful for people who forget to order for the week or can't afford the full-priced meal prep service, she told the Journal Sentinel.
The storefront is colorful and bright, thanks in part to a mural from a local artist, she said.
"It's really cute and we always have good music playing," Hutton said. Look out for cooking classes, yoga, and other community offerings in this new space in the spring.
Pet parents in Brookfield and its neighboring communities now have an option for their pets to receive emergency medical care at any time of day.
Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) opened the 24/7 clinic VEG Brookfield, 15455 W. Bluemound Road, on Jan. 31.
VEG Brookfield joins Madison as VEG's Wisconsin locations. The hospitals, of which there are 90 nationwide, "allow pet parents to stay with their pets through all stages of treatment, including surgery and overnight hospitalization," a news release said.
The pet clinic has "an open floor plan that allows pet parents to have freedom of movement and to see life-saving heroics up close," the release said.
Outlaw Oyster, 6519 W. North Ave., a pop-up seafood concept adjacent to Crafty Cow's Wauwatosa location, opened Feb. 13.
The concept is the brainchild of Devin Eichler, owner of Crafty Cow and its locations in Wauwatosa, Oconomowoc and Bay View, which are primarily known for burgers and fried chicken sandwiches.
So why fish? That's what Journal Sentinel Dining Critic Rachel Bernhard asked Eichler.
'The easy answer is, I love seafood,' he said. 'I love oysters. And creating a menu to show that off really spoke to me.'
Dishes on the menu include Northwoods-inspired smoked whitefish dip, East Coast-inspired oysters and lobster. The pop-up seafood spot also has a retail section offering snacks, wine and a variety of tinned fish.
Outlaw Oyster boasts not one, but two happy hours with snack and drink specials available from 4 to 5 p.m. and 8:30 to 10 p.m. daily.
This new restaurant soft-opened in mid-January, bringing its Japanese and Thai cuisine to a space at the Mayfair Collection that formerly housed Adriatic Fresh Seafood & Steaks.
Bangkok Kaizen's menu is filled with options, from sushi, sashimi and nigiri to a variety of noodle or rice stir-fry dishes.
Bangkok Kaizen, 11200 W. Burleigh St., is open from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Monday, and closed on Tuesday, according to the website.
Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling the restaurant at 414-420-1120.
Dining Critic Rachel Bernhard contributed to this report.

We are finally at terra firma, and that is not one of those companies that's going to be, it does have some tariff problems, but not many. And what I would emphasize to you about Chipotle, it's never going to be cheap, but it's rarely down this long.' A chef plating up a wide variety of dishes for a restaurant chain. Nintendo sees record 3.5 million sales of its latest Switch console in first four days
Nintendo sold more than 3.5 million units of its flagship Switch 2 gaming system in the four days following its launch, a record-breaking start for the company's first new console in eight years. The sales figures, reported by the Japanese multinational video-game company on Wednesday, put it on the path to realizing its aim of selling 15 million units of the Switch 2 console in the fiscal year ending March 2026. The Switch 2, which was released on June 5, has been met with much fanfare, with fans fans lined up for hours ahead of midnight releases at Nintendo stores. "Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go," Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser said in a statement, adding the company was thankful for the response. Tokyo-listed shares of Nintendo, which have gained nearly 30% so far this year, were down 3.5% on Wednesday, LSEG data showed. The company has seen its shares rise nearly fivefold since the original Switch debuted in early March 2017. It remains to be seen if the Switch 2 can recapture the magic of its predecessor, which had set the bar with 15 million unit sales in its first year. It went on to sell more than 152 million units to become the second-highest selling Nintendo device ever, behind the Nintendo DS. The record initial sales of the Switch are in line with the strong demand analysts had predicted. However, the rush has put into question Nintendo's ability to meet demand. Retailers including Walmart, GameStop, Target and Best Buy were out of stock of the consoles, their online stores showed Wednesday. In April, Nintendo's Bowser told CNBC that the company had been working with "retail partners to ensure there's ample supply for not only the launch weekend, but well beyond." However, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated the same month that 2.2 million people in Japan had entered the lottery to purchase the Switch 2 on launch day, exceeding expectations and what the company had initially planned to deliver to stores. Serkan Toto, CEO of Tokyo-based games consultancy Kantan Games, previously told CNBC shortages in Japan were expected to persist. President Donald Trump's "reciprocal tariffs" on most countries around the world also present headwinds for the Switch 2. In April, the company announced that it would delay preorders of the Switch 2 in the U.S. while it considers the impact of tariffs. The Switch 2 retails for $449 in the U.S., which makes it Nintendo's priciest console to date. Nintendo's Bowser said in April the company was going to "monitor where tariffs are going" before making any further decisions on price hikes. The Switch 2 builds on the success of the original Switch, featuring a larger screen, improved performance, and a higher price tag. The system also introduces the new GameChat2 feature, which allows players to voice or video chat with friends online and share game screens.
