Pork carnitas sold at Aldi might have metal pieces, USDA alert says
Carnitas made for Aldi by one of the nation's largest food producers 'may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically pieces of metal.'
The not-food-in-your-food warning comes from the USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service for 1-pound trays of Park Street Deli's Pork Carnitas slow-cooked with citrus with use by dates of 06/30/2025 or 07/01/2025 on the outside. They also have 'Est. 46409' in the USDA inspection mark, denoting they were made at Cargill Meat Solutions' protein processing plant in Round Rock, Texas.
These went to Aldi stores nationwide. The USDA didn't request that Cargill issue a recall because the product is no longer for sale.

'The problem was discovered when the (Cargill) establishment notified FSIS that during routine process checks they found equipment damage that may have contaminated the carnitas products with pieces of metal,' the alert states.

Calavo Growers attracts takeover interest from unnamed party
Calavo Growers, the Nasdaq-listed fresh produce business, has received a takeover approach from an unidentified suitor. The Santa Paula, California-based supplier of avocados, tomatoes, papayas and guacamole, said the 'non-binding, indicative proposal' has been put on the table at $32 a share. Calavo Growers added in an official statement yesterday (11 June) that the offer consists of shares in the interested party and a cash portion. The proposal is subject to due diligence and financing, the company said. 'This non-binding proposal may or may not lead to a transaction and the company does not intend to comment or update further unless warranted,' it noted. However, the board of Calavo Growers is 'reviewing' the proposal in consultations with its legal and financial advisors. Calavo Growers' shares closed up 1.7% at $23.58 on the Nasdaq exchange yesterday, trimming a decline this year to 7.5%. Founded in 1924, the business markets its fresh fruit range under the Calavo brand and also supplies retailers with private label. Other customers include club stores, wholesalers and the foodservice channel. As well as guacamole, it also offers valued-added products such as salsas and dips. Led by president and CEO Lee Cole, the business sources avocados from USDA-certified growers in Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Chile, and the Dominican Republic, according to Calavo Growers' 2024 annual report. It operates a facility in Uruapan, Mexico, as well as the site in California. Earlier this week, the company issued its second-quarter results. Sales climbed 3.3% to $190.5m and were up 10.6% for the year so far at $344.9m. For the quarter to 30 April, adjusted EBITDA dropped 17.3% to $11.4m but increased 22.4% over the six months to $20.7m. Net income rose 13% to $6.9m for the quarter and turned to a year-to-date profit of $11.3m compared to a $0.2m loss a year earlier. Diluted EPS came in at $0.38 versus $0.36, and $0.63 against $0.22, for the quarter and year so far, respectively. Frenzy as Aldi's fan favourite Special Buys week returns: 'Will sell out quickly'
Aldi's very popular 'Best of British' Special Buys range is back, and shoppers are already going wild over the range that was released on Wednesday. Snacks such as prawn cocktail and Worcestershire sauce chips (AKA crisps), and Galaxy Chocolate Blocks are set to fly off the shelves this week. Other pantry staples such as Yorkshire Tea, Worcestershire Sauce, HP sauce, Bistro Gravy, Branston Pickle and more are included in the list of available goodies this week. However, there are a few items that have caused a bit of confusion. Rachel Houraghan, an Aldi shopper who's originally from Ireland, tells Yahoo Lifestyle that other people who might be missing their favourite foods from back home should get in quick! "I think all the popular things will sell out quickly," she tells us. "I went last year and most things were sold out by the time I had gone in the first week." She explains that while some of the items are available at Coles or Woolworths, they are much more expensive, making the Aldi Special Buys great value. "Also no where ever does prawn cocktail crisps! I love Australia and there is nowhere I'd rather be but it's always nice to have a taste from home." She adds that she's excited to introduce prawn cocktail crisps to her Aussie friends, and also keen to get some Galaxy chocolate bars, but she was least excited by the tea cakes, which she says "were the worst thing" there. As an Irish person, she also tells us, "I wish there was more Irish products as most were British. I would have loved Meanies crisps, Spice Bag seasoning, Chilli Heatwave Doritos!" Thankfully, for anyone wondering, the food all tastes the same as Rachel remembered from back home in Ireland. Many Aldi shoppers shared that they were going to "run" to their local store to get a taste of the British snacks on offer. "I didn't know and went to Aldi last night... I was in heaven," one woman wrote on TikTok. "As I Brit I have never seen cheese and pickle crisps before (but I need them!)," another said. "$50 later and I bought half the shop," a third said, while a fourth added, "My bank is gonna hurt tomorrow." Many others were left confused, however, that the prawn cocktail crisps were Smith's, which is an Aussie brand, instead of Walkers which are British. "What are Smith's? Walkers?" one person questioned. "Smith's crisps are not British!! We have Walkers," another said.
