Warning: Six armed and dangerous CIT robbers at large in Pretoria
A manhunt is underway in Pretoria after six heavily armed suspects escaped following a violent cash-in-transit robbery.
Police are urging the public to remain alert as officers intensify efforts to track down the dangerous fugitives, who are considered extremely armed and volatile.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Mavela Masondo police arrested five suspects, aged between 35 and 50, soon after they allegedly committed a cash-in-transit robbery in Ekangala, Tshwane on Wednesday.
'Police recovered one of the getaway cars and more than one hundred rounds of ammunition. Police are on the lookout for more than six other suspects.'
He said it is reported that the suspects used a BMW to ramp the cash-in-transit van.
'The suspects then bombed the van and took undisclosed amount of cash before speeding off in different cars. The police from Gauteng Highway Patrol responded swiftly and spotted two of the getaway cars, a silver Mercedes Benz and Silver Mazda CX3.'
Masondo said a high speed chase ensued.
'While on the N12 Highway, the suspects started shooting at the police and police returned fire. One of the getaway cars was chased until the driver lost control and the suspects jumped out of the car and ran into the mielie field while shooting at the police.'
Furthermore, police were joined by private security officers, and the search continued until five suspects were arrested.
'Inside the getaway car, police found scores of ammunition.'
He said preliminary investigation revealed that these suspects are out on bail after committing cash-in-transit robberies in Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces.
'The search is underway for the suspects who escaped. Those who were arrested are expected to appear before the Margistrate Court on Monday facing charges that include cash-in-transit robbery, attempted murder and possession of ammunition. More arrests might be added, pending the investigation.'

Mandeni head-on collision claims two lives
Two people lost their lives and seven others were rushed to hospital following a head-on collision in Mandeni this afternoon. ABC gunning for Umzinyathi mayor with motion of no confidence
The fate of Umzinyathi district municipality mayor Thembisile Mchunu hangs in the balance after Abantu Batho Congress (ABC) filed a motion of no confidence against her. ABC councillor Mfundo Masondo has asked speaker Tyson Kunene to convene a meeting on Tuesday where the motion will be tabled. Masondo has accused Mchunu of shielding municipal manager Lihle Mkhwanazi who is implicated in a damning report on alleged corruption after a forensic investigation initiated by the municipal public accounts committee. 'The grounds for the request to deliberate the removal of Mchunu are based on her repeated violation of municipal processes and procedures,' said Masondo. He said there were a number of breaches at a council meeting held on May 29. Masondo said Mchunu attended the council meeting with the stated intention to deliberate an item she tabled regarding Mkhwanazi's response to the intention to suspend letter. For the second time, the mayor had presented an item without the necessary documents. Masondo said IFP councillors absconded when the issue of Mkhwanazi was to be discussed. The municipality was recently forced to reverse a payment of R5.7m for water projects that were not undertaken. According to a report compiled and tabled in the council by Garnet Ngubane and Partners Inc, the municipality entered into a relationship with a company called Bosch Projects in 2020. The company was tasked with the compilation of an operation and maintenance plan for wastewater treatment facilities, as well as pump stations, a borehole and water schemes which include the Mbono Bulk Water Project in Msinga. The forensic report details how Umzinyathi officials made irregular payments and failed to properly instruct lawyers to defend lawsuits by Bosch Projects and had to pay millions as a result of undefended lawsuits. The municipality paid lawyers to defend the council. The report recommended some officials be charged and others have their pensions withheld and money recouped. It also recommended R5.7m paid to the company be recovered as soon as possible. Former Umzinyathi mayor Petros Ngubane — under whose leadership the alleged corruption took place — said he was unaware of the developments as he was out of the province. Repeated attempts during the past two weeks to get comment from Mchunu, Kunene and Mkhwanazi have been unsuccessful.

Suspect carjacker denied bail
A 25-year-old suspect was denied bail by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court for a case of possession of a stolen vehicle. The arrest took place on May 30, around 18:00, by the Pretoria Central SAPS's Crime Prevention Team in partnership with Tracker. Spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said the team received a lookout call via radio control. They followed the lead and shortly afterwards, and managed to corner the stolen vehicle on Eeufees Street, near the N14. 'All the relevant stakeholders were called to the scene. The suspect was later taken in for detention and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle while the vehicle was booked in at the exhibit store VIS unit. Upon profiling, it was discovered that the suspect has a pending case related to car stealing and possession of dagga with cases at other police stations within the province,' Nkhumise said. The team, consisting of three constables, namely Freedom Sambo, Nyiko Olifants, and Nhlayiso Zitha, and the tracker team, managed to corner the vehicle at the above-mentioned address. The vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux 2.4 GD6 bakkie, had an estimated worth of R200 000. The station commander Brigadier Gibin Hlengani Mashaba welcomed the arrest and applauded all the role players for their efforts to put the suspect behind bars. He stated that the case has been allocated to the branch detectives, and they will ensure that the case receives a good conviction. Motorists are urged to be vigilant and very cautious of their surroundings, and also to take safety precautions while travelling at any time of the day. Police advised residents to avoid offering lifts, as this is also one of the leading factors causing hijackings. The suspect was remanded into custody and will reappear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court at a later date, pending further investigation.
