Day temp low, but humidity causes woe
Indore: Residents of Indore continued to experience discomfort on Tuesday as high humidity levels persisted despite a drop in day temperature. The Meteorological department recorded a maximum temperature of 35.6 degrees Celsius, which is 5 degrees below normal.
However, the relative humidity stood at 54% at 5:30pm, intensifying the sultry conditions across the city.
The city recorded zero rainfall in the last 24 hours until 5:30pm, even as nearby regions received moderate to heavy showers. Sanwer in Indore district reported 18 mm of rainfall. The city also witnessed gusty winds touching 34 kmph during thunderstorms on Monday night, as per Met office.

(IMD) has issued an orange alert for several districts in western Madhya Pradesh, including Dhar, Jhabua, Alirajpur, Barwani, and Khargone, with warning of thunderstorms, lightning, and moderate rainfall over the next 24 hours.
Wind speeds are expected to reach 40-50 kmph at isolated places.
During the last 24 hours, Alirajpur witnessed the highest rainfall in the state, with a significant 70 mm recorded on Monday night, followed by Jhabua with 27.8 mm. Other rainfall figures include Barwani (15.6 mm), Ujjain (15 mm), Ratlam (12 mm), Khandwa (12 mm), and Khargone (12 mm).
Met scientist Dr Divya E Surendran from IMD Bhopal attributed the unstable weather to a cyclonic circulation over south Chhattisgarh and central west Madhya Pradesh, combined with a trough line from southeast Rajasthan to north Chhattisgarh.

Pune likely to witness surge in rainfall activity
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast an increase in rainfall activity across Pune and nearby regions between June 5 and June 8. Although the progress of the southwest monsoon over Maharashtra has remained stalled for the past four to five days, weather systems developing over central India are expected to trigger showers across the state. This includes light to moderate rainfall spells in Pune city and its surrounding areas. On Wednesday, June 4, the city witnessed widespread moderate rainfall despite no specific alert being issued by the IMD for the day. Shivajinagar, which serves as the IMD's official rain gauge for the city, recorded 16.7 mm of rain, categorising it as a moderate spell. Several other parts of the city and district also received rainfall. According to SD Sanap, senior meteorologist at IMD Pune, the city can expect an uptick in rainfall over the next few days. 'Moderate to heavy showers may occur in isolated areas, accompanied by generally cloudy skies,' he said. The increased rainfall is being attributed to an upper air cyclonic circulation located over South Gujarat and adjoining areas, along with a north-south trough extending near longitude 87°E and latitude 22°N. These systems are influencing weather conditions across Maharashtra and are likely to bring light to moderate rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds (40–50 km/h) to parts of Vidarbha, Central Maharashtra, and Marathwada. A yellow alert has been issued for these regions. In Pune, early morning showers were reported in several areas, including Kondhwa, Katraj, Warje, and Lohegaon, leading to minor traffic slowdowns though no major waterlogging or damage was reported. Rural and ghat areas also saw significant rain. Nimgiri in Mulshi tehsil received the highest rainfall at 25 mm, followed by Malin (22 mm), Kurvande and Hadapsar (17.5 mm each), and Pashan and Shivajinagar (16.7 mm). Other areas like Bhor (13 mm), Lohegaon (10 mm), and Chinchwad (8 mm) also saw notable precipitation. While the monsoon is yet to make significant progress across the state, these developments indicate the beginning of more active rainfall conditions in Pune and other parts of Maharashtra. Meanwhile, the temperature in Pune dipped below the normal level. As per the official data, the maximum temperature in Pune was 28.4 degrees Celsius, which was below the normal level by 7.3 degrees Celsius. At 22.6 degrees Celsius, the minimum temperature was also below the normal level by 1 degree.

Guwahati: The flood crisis in Assam continues to be grave, with 21 districts facing severe conditions affecting 6.79 lakh people as of Wednesday evening. In the past 24 hours, two more flood-related deaths occurred — one child in Nagaon district and a man in Cachar district. Rains come & go, but roads remain a mess
Chennai: For Chennai, the longest stretch of four-five dry months begins in Jan-Feb, after the northeast monsoon. This is the ideal period to complete all outdoor civic work, especially the laying and relaying of roads battered by the rains. And Greater Chennai Corporation has missed this entire window period this year without identifying roads, auctioning works and awarding contracts. Result: Chennai's roads both in core and extended areas continue to remain battered and neglected, endangering the lives and limbs of daily commuters and residents. Major bus routes and interior lanes, many of which suffered extensive damage due to waterlogging and poor drainage during the rains, are yet to be relaid. The delay in road restoration has led to increased traffic congestion, vehicular damage, and safety hazards for both motorists and pedestrians. Areas such as T Nagar, Velachery, and parts of north Chennai report large potholes, eroded asphalt, and uneven surfaces that have worsened due to the summer heat. Commuters say travel time has doubled in some locations because of damaged roads and diversions. Now that the city has already experienced pre-monsoon showers, even if roads are relaid in the coming days, they are unlikely to last long. G Uma Devi, a retired Professor of Civil Engineering at Anna University, said, "The quality of construction is the major issue. If relaying is done properly, roads need not be redone every year, yet we find ourselves doing just that. The concerned department should hold contractors accountable and require them to offer a warranty of at least five to ten years. There should be a Road Safety Audit for Corporation roads, similar to what exists for state highways. " In Chennai, newly constructed roads have a minimum warranty of three years when built using capital and other funds. Roads built under the Chennai Mega City Development Project enjoy a five-year warranty. This defect liability period ensures that contractors are responsible for repairs during this timeframe. "The authorities focus only on relaying major bus route roads. For instance, when the chief minister recently visited north Chennai to inaugurate the tuna fishing harbour, the corporation re-laid only the main roads, leaving interior roads neglected for over a decade. Though underground sewage facilities were provided after our area was added to GCC limits, roads were never relaid," said B Niranjan Patnaik, president of the Kamarajar Nagar Residents' Welfare Association in Ernavoor. Similarly, an interior road in Madipakkam has gone without repair for 20 years, despite nine nearby roads being repaired in that time. The corporation has completed its tender process and is set to commence re-laying 3,980 roads at a length of 650.90km at a cost of 489.25 crore. Post northeast monsoon, the civic body has carried out only patch work. When contacted, GCC commissioner J Kumaragurubaran told TOI: "Typically, road relaying work begins in May. However, this year, due to administrative delays and an appraisal by TUFIDCO to check if the same roads were being relaid again, the process was postponed. Work will commence in June. Milling work has started, and relaying will be completed by the end of Aug."
