What That Thunderbolts* Asterisk Means for Some Marvel TV Characters (Warning: Movie Spoilers)
The following contains spoilers from the Marvel Studios film — post-credits scene included.
As revealed at the end of Thunderbolts*, the MCU Phase 5 team-up film now in theaters, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's John Walker aka U.S. Agent — that goofy, knock-off Captain America — is now one of the Avengers.

Announced in September 2022 and originally pegged for a July 2024 release (but pushed back thrice), Thunderbolts* assembles 'an unconventional team of antiheroes' — Yelena Belova (played by Black Widow and Hawkeye's Florence Pugh), Bucky Barnes (MCU vet Sebastian Stan), Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian (Black Widow's David Harbour), Ava Starr/Ghost (Ant-Man 2's Hannah John-Kamen), Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster (Black Widow's Olga Kurylenko) and the aforementioned John Walker/U.S. Agent (Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Wyatt Russell).
And Bob (Outer Range's Lewis Pullman).
After finding themselves ensnared in a death trap set by soon-to-be-impeached CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Falcon and the Winter Soldier's Julia Louis-Dreyfus), this collection of castoffs — self-dubbed 'Thunderbolts,' after young Yelena's pee-wee soccer team — embark on a dangerous mission with (and sometimes against) Bob aka Sentry aka The Void, that forced them to confront the darkest corners of their pasts.
As the film draws to a close, after the team of antiheroes saves poor, beleaguered New York from yet another catastrophe, Yelena & Co. stumble out onto an outdoor rally stage, where Valentina announces them to the press and all onlookers as 'The New Avengers!' (The start of the closing credits confirms that this is what the asterisk in the Thunderbolts* 'placeholder' title was always about, as the asterisk disappears and the name Thunderbolts morphs into The New Avengers.)
What this means is that John Walker — a character that made his live-action debut on one of Disney+'s first Marvel series — has graduated to Avenger status. As has Bucky (also previously seen in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier), Yelena (previously seen in Hawkeye) and the others.
Provided, that is, that this 'New Avengers' team can withstand a copyright infringement complaint filed by Bucky's bestie Sam Wilson, who is currently assembling a new team of Avengers proper. Alexei is quick to offer one workaround (ending their team name with the letter Z instead of an S), but the legal squabble is quickly set aside when Yelena alerts the team to space crisis/incursion event, and footage of a spaceship (sporting the Fantastic Four logo) entering the atmosphere above New York….
The screen then confirms that 'The New Avengers.. and Bob… Will Return.' Which isn't brand-new news, given the early cast reveal for Avengers: Doomsday, now filming.

Kevin Feige Talks Thunderbolts* Post-Credit Scene, If It Connects to Fantastic Four Movie
Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige recently opened up about the mysterious post-credits scene in Thunderbolts* and what it could mean for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Speaking to Empire Magazine, Feige was asked about the post-credits scene. In it, the New Avengers can be seen talking about their lack of support from society when they notice a spaceship has entered orbit. After taking a look, the spaceship is revealed to be none other than the Excelsior, the Fantastic Four's ship. Although Feige confirmed that the ship does indeed look like the one that belongs to the group, he then teased that the ship might not be the 'same ship' people are thinking of. 'Their ship is the Excelsior, and there is a Fantastic Four ship entering the MCU . . . But I'm not sure they're the same ship,' Feige teased. Fans were quick to begin theorizing on what Feige could have meant. The leading theory for most fans is that the ship is being piloted by none other than Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. However, it remains to be seen when the post-credits scene is taking place, as many have also theorized the scene could be a moment from 2026's Avengers: Doomsday. Kevin Feige Hints That THUNDERBOLTS*'s Big FANTASTIC FOUR Tease Might Not Be What We Think — GeekTyrant
Marvel fans thought they had it all figured out after Thunderbolts* ended with that jaw-dropper of a post-credits scene. It features a mysterious ship entering Earth-616's atmosphere, right as the New Avengers were still struggling to win over public trust. Naturally, speculation exploded… Was that the Fantastic Four finally arriving from a dying reality? And why wouldn't we think that!? The ship had a big Fantastic Four logo on the side of it! But Kevin Feige is here to cool our jets a bit. In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, the Marvel Studios head was asked if that ship was the Excelsior, the signature craft of Marvel's First Family. His response? Classic Feige mischief: "Well, the name of their ship is the Excelsior, and there is a Fantastic Four ship entering the MCU in the tag, but I'm not sure they're the same ship." Not. The. Same. Ship? This implies that the the Fantastic Four might not be on that ship, and if they aren't on board, then who is? There are a few possibilities being tossed around online. One theory is that The Fantastic Four sent Franklin Richards alone, maybe to escape Doctor Doom and prevent him from getting his hands on multiverse-warping powers. Another, is that Doom himself stole the Excelsior and is using Reed Richards' tech to break through the multiversal veil. That would flip the script entirely… imagine expecting Marvel's most first family walking off the ship and getting Victor Von Doom instead, and Victor Von Doom that looks exactly like Tony Stark. Whatever the truth is, The Fantastic Four: First Steps , which drops next month, isn't guaranteed to answer it. That tease may be a slow burn, setting us up for something much bigger in Avengers: Doomsday . Feige's cryptic wordplay is nothing new. But if there's one thing we can count on, it's that the truth will come with some multiversal consequences.

THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Director Hints a Robert Downey Jr. Cameo Is Unlikely: "Doom Is Not Part of My Film" — GeekTyrant
Fans were hoping that we would get a look at Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Victor von Doom this year, ahead of his head-to-head with the Avengers next year in Avengers: Doomsday . While he won't be the main villain in The Fantastic Four: First Steps , it was speculated that he would possibly appear, but that prospect seems to have dwindled. First Steps director Matt Shakman said in the new issue of Empire magazine, "Doom is not a part of my film, and therefore not a part of my purview." It makes sense that Doom would not be a part of this story. The Fantastic Four has its own problems and villains to defeat before they cross paths with the greater superhero network. But I still wouldn't rule out an RDJ/Doctor Doom post-credits scene. I think either Doom or a hit at the next Spider-Man film would be most natural, but you never know with these scenes. Either the end of the film, or one post-scene will most likely intersect with what we saw at the end of Thunderbolts* as well, so there will be plenty of material to play with. I can't wait to see The Fantastic Four: First Steps . It looks like it's going to be great, and it's been a while since we got a completely fresh batch of characters to play with, so I'm stoked. The film hits theaters on July 25, 2025. Tickets are now on sale.
