Surrey plans to build 10,000-seat arena and entertainment district

Global News23-05-2025

The City of Surrey will be home to a new 10,000-seat arena and entertainment district, if all goes according to plan.
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke confirmed during her State of the City address that city councillors are working towards a plan to build the new arena.
The city will be searching for a development advisor in the next few weeks to help guide the project and expect to select an operating partner later this year, Locke said.
Work on the site is targeted to begin in 2027 and will also include roughly 100,000 square feet of retail and office space and a hotel with conference facilities.

Locke did not say if a dollar figure had been attached to the project yet.
'If Surrey wants to move forward they need to be accountable with taxpayer money,' said Carson Binda with the Canadian Taxpayers Federation.
'That means proactively releasing things like contracts, proactively and in a timely fashion releasing cost estimates and all the other contracts surrounding this stadium.'
City council will also have to approve the project before it can move forward.

London Knights capture third Memorial Cup title

RIMOUSKI – The London Knights are Memorial Cup champions for a third time. Denver Barkey scored twice, Sam Dickinson had three assists and Austin Elliott made 31 saves in a dominant 4-1 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers in the championship game Sunday. Jacob Julien and Easton Cowan also scored for London, which also won in 2005 and 2016. Cowan, with seven points, became the first player since 1972 to lead the tournament in scoring for consecutive years. Barkey also had seven this year. The Toronto Maple Leafs prospect also tied Mitch Marner for the most Memorial Cup points in franchise history with 15 in nine games. The back-to-back Ontario Hockey League champions redeemed last year's heartbreaking 4-3 loss to the Saginaw Spirit in the final. The Spirit scored with 22 seconds remaining to win the trophy on home ice. Story continues below advertisement Gavin McKenna — the projected top choice in next year's NHL draft — replied for Medicine Hat, which defeated the Knights 3-1 in round robin play to qualify directly for the final and earn four days off. Harrison Meneghin stopped 20 shots for the Western Hockey League champions at Colisée Financière Sun Life. A WHL team hasn't won the Memorial Cup since the Edmonton Oil Kings in 2014. The Knights defeated the Moncton Wildcats, who the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League, 5-2 in Friday's semifinal. The Rimouski Oceanic also played in the tournament as hosts, but lost all three games. After Elliott turned away a flurry of shots — including a tricky deflection from Cayden Lindstrom — Cowan buried his third of the tournament to make it 2-0 at 3:13. Story continues below advertisement Cowan left the puck for Sam O'Reilly in the corner before circling the zone and finding an opening in front. Barkey added to the lead 1:40 later, capitalizing on a breakaway after Dickinson forced Tigers captain Oasiz Wiesblatt into a turnover at the blue line. Cowan appeared to make it 4-0 with his second of the night, but the officials ruled no-goal after O'Reilly interfered with Meneghin on a drive to the net. Barkey then scored his second of the night with a wrist shot from the left circle off the post and in past a screened Meneghin at 12:08. The Tigers peppered Elliott with shots on an ensuing power play. Bryce Pickford nearly scored but shot wide with the Knights netminder sprawling in the crease. McKenna finally broke Elliott's shutout bid by cutting into the slot and converting a wrist shot glove side 2:43 into the third period for his third goal in four games. The star winger was at it again with 5:21 remaining, beating Elliott with a slick shot into the top left corner. The goal, however, was called off following a review due to Ryder Ritchie's high stick earlier in the play. Medicine Hat pulled the goalie for an extra attacker with 3:50 left and held the puck in London's zone for much of the remaining time. The Knights held off the pressure before pouring out of the bench in celebration. Story continues below advertisement The Tigers came out with energy in the first period, piling up nine shots in the first five minutes. Jonas Woo's shot snuck under Elliott's arm but hit the side of the net. London weathered the storm and responded with pressure of their own. Dickinson missed a chance in front after a give-and-go with Barkey. Julien broke through with the opener 11:21 into the first period when Henry Brzustewicz found him up the middle. The Knights forward beat Meneghin to the backhand for his second of the tournament. Ethan Neutens nearly got Medicine Hat on the board with 42 seconds remaining in the period, but ripped his shot from the right circle off the crossbar. London and Medicine Hat dominated their respective leagues en route to the Memorial Cup. The Knights — a team loaded with 12 NHL draft picks — went 55-11-2 in the regular season and lost only once in the playoffs. The Tigers, meanwhile, lost twice in the post-season after a 47-17-4 campaign. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 1, 2025.

Bashing Barger bringing in runs for Blue Jays

TORONTO – There were many offensive stars for the Toronto Blue Jays in their four-game series sweep of the Athletics, but Addison Barger stood larger with his flair for the dramatic. Barger blasted a homer for the third consecutive game, igniting a six-run eighth inning with a three-run shot to give the Toronto Blue Jays an 8-4 comeback win on Sunday. Barger's heroics extended the Blue Jays win streak at home to seven games. In this stretch, the Blue Jays outscored the San Diego Padres and Athletics 63-24, touching home an average of nine times per game. They have a .337 team batting average with 85 hits, including 32 extra-base hits during this run. The 25-year-old Barger, of Bellevue, Wash., has contributed in each game during this streak. But his good vibrations stretch back to early May. Story continues below advertisement In his last 24 games, Barger has hit .321 with eight doubles, five homers and 15 RBIs. 'He's a pretty dynamic player. So I think it's just go, do your thing.' Barger's blast to right centre off Athletics reliever Justin Sterner travelled 412 feet after smacking a 428-foot drive into the seats on Saturday and 406 feet shot on Friday. 'He's confident as ever,' Schneider said. 'It's cool to watch it unfold. You know he's talented, and then when it starts to click like this you get sucked into every at-bat, thinking he's going to do something.' Story continues below advertisement Strange Springer Schneider reported George Springer was jumping up and down on third base when he was tagged out because he tweaked his ankle running from first to third base to end the fifth inning. Initially called safe, a video replay caught Springer off the bag. 'I saw the whole thing unfold,' Schneider said. 'He wasn't dancing. He wasn't doing anything crazy. He was testing his ankle out. 'It's the blessing and the curse of replay.' Swanson returns Reliever Erik Swanson (right forearm) returned after a 60-day stint on the injured list. He pitched a shaky eighth inning but registered the win in his first appearance. In the meantime, outfielder Daulton Varsho was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain he suffered running from second to third base on Saturday. Davis Schneider was recalled from triple-A Buffalo. Easton Lucas was optioned to Buffalo with the return of Swanson. Phillies next While the Athletics left town as the second-worst team in the American League, a much better challenge arrives in the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game set, beginning on Tuesday. Story continues below advertisement The Phillies have won 17 road games, tied for the most in the National League with the Chicago Cubs. 'I think we've played good teams really well all year,' Schneider said. 'It'll be fun. 'I think we've always kind of played them tough.' For residents of B.C.'s Lower Mainland, lining up for condo pre-sales isn't new. But the chance to save money brings them out in droves. 'They're selling 25 per cent lower [than full price],' Realtor Harman Sandu said. 'It's a really good deal' Story continues below advertisement Square Nine Developments, the company behind the project, sold 700 suites over the past two years while the building was under construction. That's why we've been pushing hard to get more housing built faster and making changes to stand up for renters and first-time home buyers.' However, many of the people Global News spoke to at Saturday's flash slae said they were buying the suites to rent out. -with files from Julia Foy
