Nathan Collins tries to take positives from poor Luxembourg performance
Nathan Collins knows Ireland's performance in Luxembourg wasn't good enough but the skipper is still drawing on the positives.The Boys in Green laboured to a 0-0 draw and nearly won it at the death when Jack Taylor smashed a shot off the crossbar.But despite a frustrating night, Ireland are still unbeaten in their four games this year going into the World Cup campaign in September.Brentford ace Collins said: 'A lot of things weren't right. Before the game we didn't want it to be that last game, end of season friendly feel to it.'We didn't want to be that passive and wanted to get after them more but we weren't at that.'But considering we're nowhere near our best, we still dug out a clean sheet. But we all know that was nowhere near our best, and we have so much more to give.'Collins continued: 'We're lucky that the result still carries momentum. The way we played we could have lost that.'We didn't deserve to win but to sit in and defend the way we did, we didn't deserve to lose.'Credit to Max O'Leary, he's been in the camp a long time and not got his caps but made two great saves.'Doc (Matt Doherty) got a tackle in and Knighty was class in front of us. We weren't at our best but we defended well, dug in and had our chances'And when we come back in September we will build on that. We have great momentum and we haven't lost in a few games.'We know there are more things to work on and get better at. Going unbeaten in four into a qualifier, I've never experienced that before so it's good.'Collins played every minute of the Premier League season for Brentford and has been a mainstay for Ireland too.Most of the players are heading straight on their holidays from Luxembourg, so Collins feels there are reasons for the flat performance.'It's been a long season,' he said. 'I've been trying to push myself to the limit. I'm physically tired, but I'm more mentally tired. I doubt I'm the only one in that boat.'We've pushed ourselves to the max this season. Away to Luxembourg, it's not an easy game.'They played a really good game, they were very good, they pressed high and that probably hurt us as well.'I know the passiveness was there but we still made them force things, we still defended in a nice solid way and made them go around us.'And Collins also believes that some fringe players have put their hands up for selection against Hungary in September after capitalising on the absence of others.'I think that's the whole point of this, you want players to come in, you want players under pressure for the next person,' he added.'You want to have that feeling, that the people behind you are pushing for your spot, it's a great thing.'

BULLS BOSS JAKE White said he needs more international players if his side are to close the gap on Leinster, who he lavished with praise after their dominant URC final performance. White referenced how smoothly Leinster dealt with losing Jamison Gibson-Park to injury late on in the week, with the experienced Luke McGrath stepping in impressively. You have to give credit where credit's due. Out of the three finals, this is by far the toughest final we've had. 'Make no bones about it, they've gone another level up. That was Test rugby. Two-time World Cup winner Handré Pollard is among the new additions for the Bulls ahead of next season, but White is worried that the gap to Leinster won't close any time soon. 'The lesson I've taken from that is we need more international players to play in our province,' said White. 'I need what Leinster have. I need to be able to fight fire with fire. Leinster, Toulouse, La Rochelle, what do you need to win those games? Academy players or seasoned internationals? 'The biggest cheer tonight was for Jordie Barrett. He's not Irish. Please don't take it the wrong way but that's what I've learned. They're sitting in the coaching box, 19-0 up, and say, ' RG, warm up.' They put him on and let him menace the defence like he did tonight. 'I keep banging the same drum. I've coached some of the best players in the world, players who have won player of the year twice. If you're playing against 23 internationals, I think today Leinster were short with only 22, there is a complete difference. 'That's a phenomenal provincial team. That must be the best Leinster team, I know that's going to be headline but that must be one of the best Leinster squads they've ever had.'

Gianluigi Buffon confirms Italy set to name Gennaro Gattuso new boss
Italy are set to appoint their former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso as manager to replace the sacked Luciano Spalletti. "We have worked, we are now waiting for the final details," said Gianluigi Buffon, now the head of delegation with the Italian football federation (FIGC). Buffon, speaking at the Under-21 European Championship, told Italy's state broadcaster RAI when asked to confirm that Gattuso would be the new coach: "The president and the whole federation have had some busy days but I think that in the end we made the best choice." Spalletti's sacking came after less than two years in the job, taking charge for the final time in the 2-0 win over Moldova the day after he announced his own dismissal following a 3-0 loss in Norway in Italy's opening World Cup qualifying game. Gattuso, who made 73 appearances for Italy and was a member of the 2006 World Cup-winning squad, recently left Croatian club Hajduk Split by mutual consent, after a third-placed finish in the country's top flight. Claudio Ranieri had been the FIGC's first choice, but the 73-year-old turned down the offer to focus on his senior advisor role at AS Roma. Gattuso began his managerial career as player coach at Swiss club Sion in 2013 where he finished his playing days after 13 seasons with AC Milan but was fired after winning two of his 10 league games in charge. His only trophy as manager came at Napoli, lifting the Coppa Italia in 2020, in a 12-year career in which he has taken charge at nine clubs, including AC Milan, Valencia and a five-month spell at Olympique de Marseille. Gattuso was appointed as Fiorentina manager in 2021, but 22 days later the club announced they had mutually rescinded the agreement, with reports citing disagreements over transfer strategy. The 47-year-old will be tasked with getting Italy to next year's World Cup, after they missed out on the last two tournaments, and will begin on the back foot after the humbling loss in Oslo.
