Royal Caribbean passengers angry over major change

Yahoo02-03-2025

When Utopia of the Seas began sailing out of Port Canaveral, it marked a first for Royal Caribbean. The ship became the first Oasis-class ship to move immediately into sailing short 3-4 day itineraries.
Previously, the cruise line had moved Allure of the Seas to Port Canaveral to gauge demand for Monday through Friday and Friday through Monday sailings. That proved very successful and it was a major draw for new cruisers. The thinking behind using top-tier equipment for shorter sailings is that it exposes people to the best the cruise line has to offer without a long commitment. That, in theory, gives them enough of a taste that they want to come back for more.
Using Utopia of the Seas for shorter sailings was an unprecedented move as new Oasis-class ships had always sailed weeklong itineraries. The move has clearly been successful.
Royal Caribbean Group CEO Michael Bayley talked about the success of Utopia of the Seas during the cruise line's third-quarter earnings call.
"This quarter, we launched Utopia of the Seas, a ship that has quickly become a game changer for a short Caribbean product, which serves as an important entry point for new to cruise and new to brand. It also skews toward millennials and younger guests. The demand for Utopia has been incredible and has well exceeded our expectations for both ticket prices and onboard revenue," he said.Using Utopia of the Seas for 3-4 sailings has been successful enough that in 2025 Wonder of the Seas will sail those same itineraries out of Miami. This is part of a larger plan by the cruise line to offer more shorter sailings that stop at Royal Caribbean's private island Perfect Day at CocoCay, and in some cases, its upcoming new beach clubs in Nassau and Cozumel.
By the 2026-2027 winter cruising season, only Symphony of the Seas sailing out of Galveston and Allure of the Seas have not been committed for 3-4 day sailings. Symphony will sail 7-day itineraries from its Texas port while the cruise line has not shared where Allure of the Seas, which is currently receiving a massive overhaul while in dry dock, will be sailing out of or what itineraries it will sail.
Royal Caribbean will be using its newest class of large ships, Icon-class, to sail 7-day itineraries.
Icon of the Seas sails out of Miami while the upcoming Star of the Seas will sail 7-night itineraries from Miami. The third Icon-class ship, Legend of the Seas, will first sail in Europe before offering 7-night cruises out of Fort Lauderdale. Many regular cruisers are not happy to see five of the seven Oasis-class ships committed to sailing 3-4 night itineraries. They shared their comments on the company's Facebook page.
"Been on a cruise and 4 days is definitely not long enough. We went 7 days, and both agreed we should have gone the 10 days! Our thoughts today are, if it was possible, we could again it would be for two weeks," Sheila Powers wrote.
Debbie Havens had doubts as well.
"I LOVE the Oasis class ships especially Wonder. We live a distance away and usually do back-to-back weeks for 14 days. Smaller trips make it so much more expensive. They should leave some for the week vacations," she posted.
Many people suggested that short cruises only make sense if you live near the port.
"I will never do 3, it's too much hassle. I am doing a 4 and I have done a 5 but I live so close to a port that it's worth it. If I had to fly, I would never do less than 7," shared PilesofLaundry113 on Reddit.
(The Arena Group will earn a commission if you book a cruise.)

Holland America Line boldly takes on Royal Caribbean

Holland America Line boldly takes on Royal Caribbean originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. Holland America Line has never really tried to deliver a cruise experience anything like what Royal Caribbean offers. A beloved cruise line known for offering longer voyages to sought-after destinations all around the world since the early 1900s, Holland America Line is renowned for its refined and immersive cruise Holland America Line ships were cruising long before Royal Caribbean or other family cruise lines took to the seas, the cruise line is not so well known to the younger generation of travelers that Royal Caribbean woos with its flashy new megaships. But not every type of traveler, even Millennials and Gen Z travelers, wants to cruise on a passenger-packed megaship to visit busy cruise ports and crowded beaches. However, many younger travelers have been told that premium cruise lines that carry fewer passengers and offer more relaxed onboard experiences, like Holland America Line and Princess Cruises, are only for older cruisers. As a Millennial myself, I can attest to this. Older cruisers have warned me that I may feel out of place on these cruise lines' ships. But honestly, that doesn't concern me since cruising in a more relaxed, refined, and less-crowded way is something that particularly appeals to me. And with its newest marketing campaign, Holland America Line seems to be speaking directly to cruisers like Royal Caribbean takes on Orlando theme park vacations with its newest action-packed megaship, Star of the Seas, Holland America Line is positioning itself as a refreshing alternative to the megaship cruise experience in the Caribbean. With its new 'Refreshingly Free' campaign, the cruise line is focusing on the things its Caribbean cruise experience proudly doesn't feature like oversized ships, amusement parks at sea, overcrowded beaches, and bland campaign targets travelers of all ages who want a more relaxing, leisurely travel experience that allows them to connect to destinations and each other on board a mid-sized cruise ship. 'For more than 150 years, Holland America Line has elevated travel by sea, and now we're excited to spotlight what makes our brand so different in the Caribbean — the elements on board and ashore that truly set us apart for guests who seek an alternative to amusement parks and overcrowded spaces,' said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer for Holland America research, Holland America Line's marketing team discovered that there are many travelers who don't want an amusement park-like cruise experience. Instead of a high-energy environment, these travelers are looking for relaxation, personalized service, and cultural enrichment. The new marketing campaign contrasts today's mainstream Caribbean cruise experiences with Holland America Line's offerings that are refreshingly different. These elements range from its ships' less-crowded pool decks and enriching activities to locally sourced cuisine and its relaxation-focused private island Royal Caribbean's private island in The Bahamas, Perfect Day at CocoCay, features a water park and plenty of ways to amplify the beach day, Holland America Line's RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay is grounded in tranquility and activities that help cruisers to soak up the natural beauty of the island. As the cruise line launches its 'Refreshingly Free' campaign, Holland America Line is also introducing a limited-time Travel By Sea promotion that features cruise fare discounts of up to 40% and a kids sail free deal designed to appeal to families and multigenerational vacationers. Royal Caribbean picks iconic godmother; Virgin Voyages faces issue

Royal Caribbean picks iconic godmother; Virgin Voyages faces issue originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. Being selected as a cruise ship's godmother (or godfather) is a great honor — one that's historically been bestowed upon influential women from royalty and Hollywood stars to athletes and inspiring activists, and even Tinker Bell. Rooted in maritime tradition, the appointment of a cruise ship's honorary godmother is a meaning-filled practice that's central to the launch of every ship. Becoming a cruise ship's godmother doesn't require a big commitment, but it's a special role.A cruise ship's godparent participates in the ceremony to officially name and christen the vessel. During the naming ceremony, the godparent traditionally breaks a bottle of Champagne over the ship's bow to bless the new vessel with good luck and protection for all who sail on her. For Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas, this christening act was performed by soccer superstar Lionel Messi. Now, a music icon has been selected to fill the important role for its sister ship, Star of the Seas. Doug Parker shared details on Royal Caribbean's newest cruise ship godmother, and other cruise news including mechanical troubles impacting Virgin Voyages' sailings, on the June 6th edition of Cruise News This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Friday, June 6th. Virgin Voyages is adjusting the itinerary for Valiant Lady just right before departure, actually. Today's sailing of the Dominican Daze cruise will now skip Puerto Plata and instead call on Grand Turk due to engine maintenance. The arrival time in Bimini, Bahamas has also moved up an hour. Virgin says there's no compensation plan, but new excursions are being offered for Grand Turk. The change follows a recent onboard power outage that happened last Thursday, raising concerns about ongoing mechanical issues with the Caribbean has named music legend Diana Ross as godmother of its newest ship, Star of Seas, set to debut in August. The ship, part of the line's Icon Class, will sail from Port Canaveral and feature destinations like CocoCay in The Bahamas. Ross will christen the ship in the Aqua Theater on the back of the vessel, continuing the maritime tradition of blessing the ship and its passengers. Star of the Seas promises family-focused vacations with eight themed neighborhoods, a water park, pools, entertainment, and over 40 dining Holland America Line is setting itself apart in a new Caribbean campaign by focusing on what it doesn't offer. The 'Refreshingly Free' marketing campaign highlights the absence of amusement parks, massive crowds, and oversized ships, touting more of the mid-sized vessels, fewer guests, and relaxed atmosphere. We recently published a list of . In this article, we are going to take a look at where Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) stands against other stocks that Jim Cramer discusses. Acknowledging that they recognize that Cramer considers Royal Caribbean Cruises best of breed, a caller inquired about Carnival Corporation & plc (NYSE:CCL). Cramer replied: 'Look, I know, you correctly nailed me and my view, which is that Royal Caribbean's the best. I frankly just have to own best of breed. I know that may make me into someone who's hidebound. I might miss some good stocks. Carnival's good, but Royal Caribbean is great…' A luxurious cruise ship sailing the deep blue sea, sun glistening off its decks. Carnival Corporation (NYSE:CCL) provides leisure travel services through a variety of cruise brands, including Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Seabourn, Costa Cruises, AIDA Cruises, P&O Cruises, and Cunard. On June 5, Citi analyst James Hardiman increased the price target on CCL from $25 to $28 and maintained a Buy rating. The firm pointed to recent web traffic and pricing analysis that showed improvement from April to May, calling it a positive shift after some softness in April data. Citi noted that pricing remains steady, suggesting cruise operators are showing restraint, especially with most capacity already booked through 2025. Overall, CCL ranks 5th on our list of stocks that Jim Cramer discusses.
