Sniff squad upgrade: Fire Dept to bring in 16 new K9 dogs from UK for RM2.4m

Malay Mail22-04-2025

SEREMBAN, April 22 — The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department's (JBPM) K9 Dog Detection Unit will receive 16 new canines from the United Kingdom (UK) this year, costing RM2.4 million, said JBPM director-general Datuk Nor Hisham Mohammad.
He said that this addition will complement the existing 20 live assets across the country, further strengthening the team's K9 operations.
'Half of the current dogs are over 12 years old, compared to the recommended age range of eight to 10 years. The initial selection process for 20 dogs has already been completed in the UK. So in June, we will send three of our officers to work alongside trainers there.
'They will train them first, then from the 20, they will reduce it to the number we want, which is 16. If any of the selected puppies are not suitable at that time, they will look for others, so the process will take place in three months,' he told reporters after attending the JBPM Negeri Sembilan Aidilfitri celebration at the JBPM headquarters last night.
The event was also attended by Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun last night.
He said that the sniffer dogs in question include breeds such as the English Springer Spaniel and Labrador Retriever, which are more suited to Malaysia's tropical climate and have more effective specialised functions.
Nor Hisham stated that there are four specialised disciplines for K9 dogs: Wilderness Search and Rescue (SAR), Fire Forensics, Water Cadaver Detection and Urban Search and Rescue (USAR).
'If there are no obstacles, some of the 16 dogs we purchase will be trained in Malaysia and we will conduct internal training with Genting World Berhad for other classes,' he said.
He also said that the 30 new fire engine units, worth RM45 million, will be received in the next six months to replace old engines through a disposal and replacement process managed by the appointed company.
He expressed hope that the new asset replacements will enhance the team's excellence as well as ensure they remain at peak performance at all times. — Bernama

Gerik crash: 'Some victims were thrown out, others trapped inside bus'

KUALA LUMPUR: Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Sayani Saidon said the bus and the Perodua Alza were travelling in the same direction, from Jeli, Kelantan, to Gerik, at the time of the incident. She confirmed that 48 individuals were involved in the crash, which caused the bus to overturn and the MPV to skid into a ditch. "Some victims managed to exit the vehicle on their own, some were thrown out, while others remained trapped inside the bus. "The operations commander cut open the rear section of the bus using hydraulic tools to create a working space," she said, adding that once access was gained, six victims were found still inside the bus. Sayani said fire department personnel stabilised the injured victims and extracted them from the bus before handing them over to the Health Ministry for further treatment. "Injured victims, including those who managed to exit the vehicle on their own, received initial treatment from MoH personnel at the scene before being sent to the hospital," she said. Meanwhile, UPSI deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin said most of the bus passengers were UPSI students returning to campus in Tanjong Malim from Terengganu after the Aidiladha holidays.

Tanjung Harapan boat capsize: Fire Dept suspects missing victims were swept away by strong currents during towing

KLANG, June 8 — The Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) has not ruled out the possibility that two missing victims of a boat capsized in the waters off Tanjung Harapan yesterday were swept away by currents while the boat was being towed to the floating jetty of the Selangor Maritime Headquarters here. Port Klang Fire and Rescue Department (BBP) head, Deputy Superintendent Haikal Jammy Ngali said from initial investigations, the boat the victims were on was towed by a public boat for 0.3 nautical miles before they received a distress call regarding the incident at around 5 pm the same day. He said the department also did not rule out the possibility that the victims, who were a married couple, were thrown overboard during the capsize. 'Although the sunken boat was successfully refloated, the two victims being sought were not inside the boat, thus strengthening the fire department's theory that the two victims drifted away with the current. 'So far, the rescue team has only carried out surface search-level as opposed to deep diving because the fire department has not been able to ascertain the exact location of the capsize,' he said at a press conference which was also attended by North Klang police chief ACP S. Vijaya Rao at the search location in Tanjung Harapan here today. Meanwhile, Vijaya said the police party has not found any clues regarding the two missing victims even though the search radius covered an area of five nautical miles. Regarding the refloated boat, he said it would be taken to the Port Klang Marine Police base for further inspection and investigation, including technical aspects. 'In addition, we would also like to inform that the bodies of the three victims, including a three-year-old child who died in the incident, have been claimed by the family after the post-mortem was completed at the Shah Alam Hospital today,' he said. Vijaya also stated that the search and rescue operation was suspended at 7 pm and will resume tomorrow morning. In the capsize of the boat with six on board at about 5 pm, three individuals, including a child, died, while one survivor, Alvin Chang Yan Qin, 17, was rescued, and the married couple is still missing. The deceased victims were Darren Gan, 3; Cheu Son Hin, 50; and Fong Yong Sen, 29, while the missing were identified as Gan Hon Tat, 32, and his wife Careen Man, 29, both from Klang Utama. — Bernama
