Won't you be my neighbor? No thanks, Elon Musk.
Written by Kirsten Grind
At first, residents of the upscale cul-de-sac in West Lake Hills, Texas, did not know who had moved into the 6,900-square-foot, six-bedroom mansion next door.
Then construction workers arrived to erect a 16-foot chain-link fence around the $6 million property, which is one of four homes on the leafy street. They also installed an outward-facing camera. Next, a fleet of cars — many of them Teslas — began parking on the street. Three times a day, a shift change signaled security personnel coming and going at the house. Once, the driver of a passing car shouted late at night that he was looking for a party at 'E's house.'
No one liked the commotion, or the traffic, or the keypad-activated gate opening and closing for workers and cars at all hours. So even when they learned through word of mouth that their new neighbor was Elon Musk, the world's richest man, that did not stop some of them from grousing to the city of West Lake Hills about his mansion.
The complaints have since escalated into an uproar over city ordinances, permits and exceptions known as variances — so much so that the matter of Musk's house landed in a contentious Zoning and Planning Commission meeting last month. The debate is headed next to a West Lake Hills City Council session, scheduled for May 14.
'Transporting service employees to other houses, leaving their cars on our quiet streets, hauling laundry to and fro to other houses has to stop,' Paul Hemmer, a neighbor and the main complainant, wrote to the Zoning and Planning Commission. The letter was also signed by the occupants of the two other houses on the street.
For the past few months, Musk, 53, has bulldozed his way across Washington, flouting long-established traditions and hacking away at what he deemed to be unnecessary federal bureaucracy. But in his own backyard outside Austin, the tech billionaire has become mired in a maze of local regulations and red tape. No one, it seems, is rich enough to escape the neighbors.
Moguls including Mark Zuckerberg have sometimes hit the limits of their wealth and connections in disagreements over their luxury homes. So has Musk, who is so far losing against the municipal bureaucracy in West Lake Hills. He and his employees did not obtain permits for a metal gate and the fence built around the property, making the chain-link structure 10 feet taller than was allowed, local records showed. In total, the construction violated six city ordinances. After some neighbors protested, Musk's team tried to gain retroactive permission for the projects.
But Jim Pledger, one of the six commissioners on the West Lake Hills Zoning and Planning Commission, said he and his colleagues voted unanimously last month against recommending that the homeowner — he was careful not to name Musk — be granted variances for the projects. If an exception was made, Pledger said, 'we'd incentivize people to break the rules.'
Unless the City Council disagrees with that decision, Musk faces the prospect of tearing down the fence and gate or changing them to comply with the town's rules.
Musk's history in Texas is relatively recent. The tech mogul, who oversees six companies, moved most of his business operations to the state from California starting around 2021. He has built factories for his electric vehicle company, Tesla, his rocket company, SpaceX, and his tunneling venture, the Boring Co., around Austin and neighboring Bastrop.
Musk also moved himself to Austin. He initially wanted to build houses for himself and his children (he has at least 13) on hundreds of acres that he bought there. After the plan fell through, he looked at other properties.
In 2022, Musk purchased the West Lake Hills home through a limited liability company, which was named after the street where the property sits. The house is in the middle of a residential neighborhood at the bottom of about 2 acres of sloping land off a narrow public road, making security challenging.
'Castles are supposed to be built on hills, right?' said Anne Yeakel, a longtime West Lake Hills resident who lives around the corner. 'These were sophisticated buyers, and if security was the prime directive, this was not the house for it.'
Musk and his staff did not introduce themselves to the neighbors. Few residents have seen him there. But word traveled fast in the community of 3,400, and soon everyone knew he had moved in.
'It's common knowledge here,' Yeakel said.
The mansion was one of three that Musk bought in the area over the past three years to create a compound for his children and their mothers. At one point, Claire Boucher, known as the musician Grimes, lived with Musk and their three children in the house. Shivon Zilis, a brain technology executive who has four children with Musk, lives about a 10-minute walk away. Musk also purchased another Tuscan-style mansion about a year ago.
Neighbors soon grew frustrated with the constant hubbub at the house. They saw people coming and going carrying gun holsters, as the security team ballooned along with Musk's safety concerns. Though Texas has permissive gun laws, the activity stood out.
'I call that place Fort Knox,' said Hemmer, a retired real estate agent who lives across the street and is president of the neighborhood homeowners association.
The house was quieter on days when Musk was not in town, neighbors said, especially in recent months, when he lived mostly in Washington to advise President Donald Trump. Now residents are bracing for Musk's return, after he said he would spend less time in the capital.
Some neighbors became particularly annoyed at the hulking fence in front of the mansion, as well as the giant metal gate at the other end of the property, which appears to serve as an employee entrance.
Hemmer, who has long owned a Tesla, grew so frustrated with his neighbor that he began flying a drone over the house to check for city violations, and he keeps a video camera trained on the property around the clock. Last year, he complained to West Lake Hills officials about Musk's fence, the traffic and how he thought the owner was operating a security business from the property.
Musk's security team also contacted the West Lake Hills Police Department about Hemmer, according to city records. One security official accused Hemmer last year of standing naked in the street, according to the records.
Hemmer denied that he was naked and said he was on his property wearing black underwear. On another night, he said, he was walking his dog fully clothed and stopped when he suddenly needed to urinate — which Musk's camera captured.
'The cameras got me,' Hemmer said. 'It's scary they have guys sitting and watching me pee.'
After repeated remonstrances from Hemmer, West Lake Hills officials found that Musk had violated city ordinances with the fence and the gate. Last month, the Zoning and Planning Commission debated whether to grant him variances for the projects.
Before the meeting, Tisha Ritta, a permit expert working for Musk's limited liability company, wrote a letter to the planning commission asking for relief from the city rules.
'As a high-profile public official, the property's resident faces ongoing security threats, making proactive safety measures imperative,' she wrote, according to a copy of the letter. Ritta did not respond to requests for comment.
Hemmer and other residents wrote their own letter to the planning commission, admonishing their neighbor for facilitating 'bad behavior on our quiet little cul-de-sac.'
For a time, Musk appeared poised to win the neighborhood battle. Planning and zoning officials recommended that his property be granted 'hardship variances,' which would allow him to keep the fence and other projects with only small changes to the property, according to city documents.
But at the planning meeting, the commissioners refused Musk the variances. When they questioned Ritta, she blamed a former house manager for failing to get permits for the construction.
'I just met the property owner last year, and unfortunately they were under the guidance of the property manager,' she said, according to a recording of the meeting.
Hemmer also spoke up at the meeting to say he doubted the homeowner had been misguided.
'If you follow him at all in the news, he's always guilty of building stuff and then asking for permission later,' he said.
One commissioner, who was not identified in the recording, said she could not believe West Lake Hills staff had recommended that the homeowner receive any exceptions.
'I'm astounded the staff is putting forth any kind of suggestions we bend based on who is asking,' she said.
The planning commission's decision does not end the process. At the upcoming West Lake Hills City Council meeting, members must decide whether to stick with the commissioners' recommendation on Musk's mansion.
If the City Council votes against him, Musk could sue the town. And if that does not work — and given his track record in backing candidates — there is always the next local election.

Did This Mysterious 'X' Account Stop Elon Musk And Donald Trump's Ugly Spat?
Last Updated: A mysterious account was hailed as hero for possibly saving space explorations after Elon Musk exploded on US President Donald Trump and threatened to decommission Dragon aircraft. An X account with barely any followers is being hailed as a hero for possibly helping Elon Musk cool down during his ugly spat with Donald Trump. For the uninitiated, the two powerful men had a dirty public fallout after the US President publicly criticized the world's richest man and his former pal at a White House press briefing, backing legislation that could severely impact the electric vehicle industry. Musk owns Tesla. This did not sit down well with the Teslaman for obvious reasons. Logging into the website he owns, Musk took to X and responded to the President he sounded 'ungrateful" after the techie backed Trump both strategically and financially during the 2024 US Presidential elections. One thing led to another and Musk had a meltdown of epic proportions online for the world to witness. Several political and personal attacks were directly aimed at Trump but at some point in the day, Musk had a divine intervention. A Shame An X user who goes by the handle @Fab25june responded to one of Musk's (deleted) posts stating that the Tesla chief had to stop the back and forth. The unknown X user was responding to Musk's threat to 'decommission" SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft that carries astronauts and essential supplies to the International Space Station. For context, Musk's post was in response to Trump's threat to chop federal contracts with his companies. The X user, tired of the standoff between the two powerful men, came in to save the day. 'This is a shame this back and forth. You are both better than this. Cool off and take a step back for a couple days," the user wrote. Musk, realising that his retaliation could have a major impact on space exploration with NASA being directly affected by his actions, took a breather and called it a day. 'Good advice. Ok, we won't decommission Dragon," a humbled down Musk wrote in response. (X Screengrab) 'Saviour Of Space Exploration" As news websites across the globe reported about Musk dropping the insane plan of decommissioning the Dragon spacecraft, folks on the X platform quietly thanked the soul for possibly saving the future of space travel. Shoutout to this guy with 17 followers for saving space exploration — greg (@greg16676935420) June 6, 2025 'Never think your voice doesn't count," wrote one. 'Haha oh man. This is why I decided to mostly ignore today's drama and come back to see what filters out. Good on Alaska." 'This man really walked into the Elon drama like: 'Guys, stop fighting" — and they DID." The account, for obvious reasons, experienced a massive jump in its followers count, taking them from a couple of hundred followers to over 6K in a single day. "Don't Fight Guys": Ex-Russia President To Trump, Musk. Tesla CEO Responds
New Delhi: Amid escalating tensions between US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has offered to mediate a "peace deal" between them - a role assumed by the Republican leader amid the war between Russia and Ukraine. According to Mr Dmitry Medvedev, Moscow is ready to become a mediator for a "reasonable fee". They will accept Starlink shares as payment, he said. "We are ready to facilitate the conclusion of a peace deal between D and E for a reasonable fee and to accept Starlink shares as payment. Don't fight, guys," the former Russian President wrote in a post on X. To this, the Tesla CEO responded with a laughing emoji. 😂 — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) June 6, 2025 Mr Medvedev's comment comes a day after Russian lawmaker Dmitry Novikov has suggested that Musk could seek political asylum in Russia. "I think that Musk has a completely different game, that he will not need any political asylum, although, if he did, Russia, of course, could provide it," Mr Novikov told the Russian News Agency TASS. The lawmaker noted that over the years, Musk has formed "a kind of political communication", so "individual disagreements will remain separate disagreements". "At this stage, the return of the Democratic team to the White House in three years is not what I think Musk needs and not what he is ready to applaud. Therefore, there are tactical differences, and there are strategic things, and he will adhere to them, it seems to me," he said. Another Russian senator, Dmitry Rogozin, who once ran the country's space programme, wrote to Musk on X, saying, "If you encounter insurmountable problems in the US, come to us. Here you will find reliable comrades and complete freedom of technical creativity." Musk was the largest donor to Trump's 2024 election campaign, featured in his pre-poll outings and then remained firmly by his side as the Republican assumed office. Trump had even praised the billionaire in his victory speech, saying a "star is born". But months later, the friction between the two former allies began shortly after the Tesla CEO criticised the US President's marquee tax bill, calling it too expensive and a measure that would undermine his work with the US DOGE Service. Days later, Musk announced his exit from the US administration. Irked by Musk's criticism, Trump said he was "very disappointed with Elon". Then Musk, never one to retreat quietly, retaliated, posting on X, "Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate." This turned into an ugly spat with Musk making big accusations against Trump.

How This White House Official Triggered A Fallout Between Donald Trump, Elon Musk
Last Updated: Various reports have surfaced claiming that a White House official was behind the latest tiff between Donald Trump and Elon Musk over a mega tax and spending bill. The recent feud between US President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk may be one of the ugliest public spats witnessed this year. The once-close allies had a bitter falling out over the White House's $4 trillion tax and spending bill. Their public disagreement began when Musk called the bill a 'disgusting abomination". Subsequently, on Thursday, Trump stated he was 'very disappointed" by Musk's criticism and that the future of their relationship was uncertain. The row quickly escalated as Musk claimed Trump's name was mentioned in the files related to sexual abuser Jeffrey Epstein, while sharing a post on social media calling for Trump's impeachment. Meanwhile, Trump said Musk had 'lost his mind" and threatened to cut his government contracts. However, various reports have surfaced claiming that a White House official was behind the latest tiff between Trump and Musk, engineering a public fallout between the world's most powerful man and the world's richest man. Who Was Behind Trump-Musk Feud? According to a report by Axios, the final straw behind Musk's relationship with Trump came when the US president abruptly announced he was withdrawing the nomination of Jared Isaacman to be NASA administrator. Isaacman is a close friend of Musk's and was backed by the Tesla boss. After Isaacman's nomination was dropped, reports surfaced that Sergio Gor, the director of the Office of Presidential Personnel who had clashed with Musk, was behind the decision. 'This was Sergio's out-the-door 'f**k you' to Musk," a White House official said. Five sources told the New York Post that Gor was instrumental in the withdrawal of Isaacman's nomination, turning a contained disagreement on legislation into a firestorm of insults. Gor had pulled up Isaacman's donations to Democrats, including $100,000 in 2021 to a PAC linked to Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Gor's 'Humiliation' By Musk Musk and Gor had disliked each other since before Trump took office on January 20, with the former describing Gor as 'sleazy" during the transition and questioning his staffing picks. Furthermore, Gor was reportedly 'humiliated" by Musk during a Cabinet meeting on March 6, when the Tesla CEO criticised the pace of staffing the administration. Following Thursday's feud, Gor had reportedly bragged to his colleagues about giving the billionaire 'payback" for making him look bad. 'Elon was always telling the president 'Sergio's not moving fast enough to hire people. He's not the right guy for the job.' In front of the entire Cabinet, he said that. It's not just humiliating, but the president starts looking at him like, 'Why aren't you doing your f—ing job?'" a source said. Some sources said Gor's intensely personal dislike of Musk was illustrated by his periodic celebrations when Tesla's stock cratered. 'He'd go around showing Tesla stock prices going down and laugh about it, like he was responsible for taking the Tesla stock down," one source revealed. Gor Denies Vendetta Rumours As per the report, Gor had an obsession with Musk for making him look bad and spared little opportunities to gloat when Tesla's stock price declined. He also forwarded an article to his colleagues that expressed concerns about Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). However, Gor has denied harbouring a personal vendetta against Musk and insisted that reports of him celebrating Tesla's stock decline were false. 'I fully support President Donald Trump's decision to remove this nominee. Those who actively supported Democrats in the last cycle have no place in this administration. This was never about Elon," he said in a statement on Trump withdrawing Isaacman's nomination for NASA administrator. Former White House staffer Steve Bannon defended Gor and claimed Trump's cancellation of a planned Pentagon briefing for Musk about China, and the president not acting to extend Musk's 130-day tenure as a special government employee fuelled the dispute.
