Braveheart's Mel Gibson makes surprising confession about filming of iconic Scots movie

MEL Gibson has admitted he faked it as a film director when he was making Braveheart.
The Aussie-born superstar, 69, said he had to pretend to the crew and enormous cast that he was totally in control of the £150million blockbuster.

He came clean at a Fan Expo convention in Philadelphia, US, as the Oscar-winning epic celebrated its 30th anniversary.
Gibson, who played legendary Scots freedom fighter Sir William Wallace, recalled: 'It was only my second outing as a director and it was a massive shoot.
'There were about 3,000 people on the set. They're all looking at you like you know what you're doing.
'So I pretended I knew what I was doing.
'But somehow it all came together.
"Logistically speaking, it was a monster — from feeding everybody to getting them all to look like they were in the war.'
Gibson said his 'proudest achievement' was avoiding serious injuries in the movie's many battle scenes.
He explained: 'One guy got a hangnail and another got a broken nose and twisted ankle but that was it.
'It was a long shoot — there were 105 shooting days. We didn't get any days off.'
'But I'm really proud of the end result. It really paid off.'
Braveheart fans go mad for Mel Gibson as he's asked about independence
Elsewhere a former child star from Braveheart has revealed how he used to slag off Mel Gibson's dodgy Scots accent on set - so the Hollywood A-lister begged him to help improve his brogue.
Andrew Weir from Ayr played William Wallace's best pal Hamish in the Oscar-winning flick and even managed to get family friend James Robinson a crucial part as the young freedom fighter.
But the pair would regularly fall into hysterics at the Aussie actor's attempt to master our dialect.
Andrew, who now lives in New York, says: 'I think Mel liked that we were kids and not intimidated by him. We used to laugh at his accent and he would ask us to help him make it better.'

Noel Edmonds devastated over horror disease as he makes TV comeback

After leaving the UK, Noel Edmonds has delved into his passion for farming. But despite his experience on his own farm, he's haunted by the foot and mouth disease outbreak in 2001. Noel Edmonds was personally affected by the deadly outbreak of foot and mouth disease back in 2001. He's been the face of Channel 4 's Deal Or No Deal, a fixture on Top Of The Pops and one of the most recognisable names in British television. Now, at the age of 76, Noel Edmonds is embarking on a new adventure – and he's filmed it all for ITV. ‌ The presenter first settled in Auckland, New Zealand 's busiest city, but it wasn't quite the serene escape he had hoped for. Craving stillness, he and his wife Liz eventually bought land in Ngatimoti, at the top of South Island. 'The Tasman region is stunning,' Noel says. 'Nelson is our nearest city, though it feels more like a large town. We're very happy here.' ‌ Essex-born Noel's love of the land stems from childhood and his memories of summers spent in Carlisle with his Aunt Muriel. His enthusiasm later developed into a passion for ethical farming. 'When my career took off and I could afford a nice house, I bought one with 10 acres. I later bought more land, and by the late 70s or early 80s, I'd started farming,' he says. After the devastation of the 2001 foot and mouth disease outbreak in Devon, which paralysed the farming industry, Noel became an advocate for animal welfare. 'It means treating livestock with respect,' Noel says. "One of the core principles of ethical farming is respect for livestock. My passion and determination partly comes from my experience in Devon in 2001, during the foot and mouth disease (FMD) outbreak. That year taught me a lot - especially relevant to recent years with flu outbreaks and government responses to major health issues." Luxury hotel offering Elemis spa treatment with a free £101 beauty gift In Noel Edmonds' Kiwi Adventure, Noel lifts the lid on his life down under in New Zealand. Noel and his wife Liz made the move in 2019, and it was as instinctive as it was life-changing. ‌ 'Our first holiday was to New Zealand, and it was a fantastic trip,' he remembers. 'We stayed in a couple of luxury lodges, but also in B&Bs and farm stays. We began to understand the Kiwi way of life. We returned to the UK thinking this could be our future.' Things rapidly unfolded. The end of Deal Or No Deal – after an extraordinary 3,000 episodes – marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of another for Noel. Looking back, he says, 'It was a punishing schedule but a fabulous period of my life. Without Deal, I wouldn't have met Liz.' Noel and Liz have also launched a hospitality business with a vineyard, pub, restaurant and a supermarket. But for his new show, the focus shifts towards something even more ambitious. ‌ The couple want to create New Zealand's first energy garden – a pioneering project that blends biodiversity, community and sustainability into one regenerative living space. In the series, Noel will tackle hands-on challenges, meet inspirational locals and try to navigate day-to-day life in some seriously wild weather. 'The weather here has an attitude,' Noel says. 'Oh, and earthquakes. We've had three.' But he's made friends for life. 'We've been lucky. We've met some incredible people and they've welcomed us. They're glad we came. We're grateful to be here.'

Blake Lively speaks out on Justin Baldoni's £294m defamation lawsuit dismissal

Blake Lively initially launched a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin Baldoni - who has strongly refuted the claims - after the pair worked together on It Ends With Us Blake Lively has spoken out for the first time since she was cleared in the $400million (£294million) defamation and extortion lawsuit filed by her It Ends with Us collaborator Justin Baldoni. The actress' powerful statement comes just hours after a judge dismissed Justin's case. Blake, 37, said on Instagram: "Last week, I stood proudly alongside 19 organisations united in defending women's rights to speak up for their safety. ‌ "Like so many others, I've felt the pain of a retaliatory lawsuit, including the manufactured shame that tries to break us. While the suit against me was defeated, so many don't have the resources to fight back." ‌ Blake initially launched a sexual harassment lawsuit against Justin - who has strongly refuted the claims. However, he hit back with the $400million defamation claim against her, her publicist and husband Ryan Reynolds, all of whom have dismissed the accusations. But after the judge chucked out Justin's claims, a source close to the Los Angeles-born actress said: "Today's opinion is a total victory and a complete vindication for Blake Lively, along with those that Justin Baldoni and the Wayfarer Parties dragged into their retaliatory lawsuit." The row happened after Blake and Justin, 41, starred together in It Ends With Us, a romcom released last year. The alleged sexual harassment occurred during production for that film, which Justin directed. But now, speaking after the dismissal, Blake added she was "more resolved than ever to continue to stand for every woman's right to have a voice in protecting themselves, including their safety, their integrity, their dignity and their story". The Gossip Girl actress, who has four children with Ryan Reynolds, "With love and gratitude for the many who stood by me, many of you I know. Many of you I don't. But I will never stop appreciating or advocating for you." Last month, Blake's pal Taylor Swift was dragged into the scandal when she was officially subpoenaed to appear as a witness. The pop star was delivered a legal notice by Justin's lawyer Bryan Freedman - a decision which had been slammed by her team as a tactic to create clickbait. In a move that appeared to please Blake and Taylor, it was confirmed Justin would no longer be calling on the Bad Blood hitmaker to appear as a witness. Bryan Freedman had claimed Blake had called on "her high-profile friends" including Taylor to "manipulate Justin at every turn." Taylor, who is close friends with Blake, licensed her hit song My Tears Ricochet to be used in the film but was not involved in the making of It Ends With Us, said her reps. Justin has denied all allegations brought about by Blake.
