‘Who will return my son to me?'

Hindustan Times3 days ago

As the bodies of the victims from Wednesday's stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium were released to grieving families, grief quickly turned to anger. One after another, heartbroken parents, spouses and relatives accused the government and organisers of gross negligence, holding them responsible for the chaos that claimed the lives of their loved ones, many of them students and young professionals who had only come to see their cricketing heroes.
The message from families was clear: this tragedy could have been prevented.
'I kept telling him not to go,' said DT Lakshman, father of 20-year-old Bhoomik DL, an engineering student from Hassan. 'His mother too told him not to go. But, he wanted to click pictures and post them on social media. Now, no matter how loud I call his name, he will not come back. Ministers may visit us, but who will return my son to me?'
Bhoomik's body was brought to his native Kuppugodu village, where the family conducted the final rites. 'What should I do with all this wealth now, without my son?' Lakshman asked, having spent years building a future for Bhoomik in Bengaluru.
In Puttur, the family of 19-year-old Chinmayi Shetty echoed his sentiments. A bright engineering student and Yakshagana performer, Shetty died after being crushed by the crowd. 'She had so many dreams — she was good at studies, passionate about sports and Yakshagana,' said her uncle Sadananda Shetty. 'If there had been proper crowd control, this could have been avoided.'
Akshatha Pai, 26, a chartered accountant and gold medallist attended the event with her husband Akshay Pai. They had both taken the day off, and entered the stadium through Gate No. 17, proudly wearing RCB jerseys. 'We were walking in together, holding hands,' Ashay Pai recalled. 'Suddenly, there was a huge push… I lost hold of her. I searched frantically. Then I saw her, lying motionless on the ground… She was wearing the RCB t-shirt. That's how I recognised her.'
The body of 14-year-old Divyamshi BS, a Class 9 student, was taken to Andhra Pradesh by her family after a tearful farewell in Bengaluru. Her mother Ashwini blamed the authorities for the failure to control the crowd. 'They said entry was free, so why didn't they open all gates?' she asked.
Ashwini's anger was echoed by Divyamshi's grandfather Lakshmi Narayana. 'There was no police deployment at Gate 15,' he said. 'She went with her mother and aunt. Those present had to rush her to the hospital in an auto.'
In Mandya's Rayasamudra village, the family of 27-year-old civil engineer Poorna Chandra was in mourning. He had travelled to Bengaluru for the celebration with friends, but never made it back. 'Just the night before, we had sweets at home to celebrate RCB's victory,' said his mother Leelavathi. 'Now that very celebration has taken our son away from us.' His uncle Somashekar revealed that the family had planned his wedding for the upcoming Shravana season. 'We had even asked him to meet a prospective bride just yesterday,' he said.
Another life lost was that of 17-year-old Shivalinga Chandappa Kumbara, a pre-university student from Yelahanka. His parents, daily-wage labourers from Yadgir district, were informed by police late at night that their son had 'met with an accident'.
'When we reached the hospital, we saw his body and were shocked beyond words,' said his brother Honnappa. 'There were clear signs of injuries on his chest from being trampled.'

Shreyas Iyer to lead, Virat Kohli to open: Check IPL 2025's team of the season, players featuring from CSK, MI, GT, RCB, PBKS and LSG

IPL 2025's memorable season, marked by exciting close games and the emergence of new talent, culminated in a championship victory for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. This collection of pictures highlights a Dream Team composed of the season's top performers from various franchises. Broadly speaking, GT's left-handed batter did very well this season, hitting 759 runs and taking home the Orange Cap. His ability to score a lot from the opening positions helped the team win and made him a well-known talent among young players in the league. Virat Kohli played a vital part in RCB's IPL final win by guiding the team to victory. Throughout the season, his 657 runs, especially his key innings, highlighted that he was still very skilled and eager to compete. A big reason for Gujarat Titans' good record in the league was Jos Buttler's impressive batting performance. He helped the team by scoring 538 runs, playing steadily while also being strong behind the wickets. It was Suryakumar Yadav's great batting that helped Mumbai Indians remain competitive in the playoff race and in the final stages of the season. Under Shreyas Iyer's leadership, the Punjab Kings made it to the IPL final but failed to win. By doing this, Shreyas has become the first player to captain various teams in the IPL final. The performance of the Punjab Kings in the tournament was greatly helped by Shreyas' runs. Lucknow Super Giants relied on Pooran's strong batting performance for their success. His impressive performance with the bat generated respect for him as a top bomber in the IPL. Royal Challengers Bangalore would not have won the championship without Krunal Pandya's all-round great performance. He played an important role by getting 17 wickets and scoring an unbeaten 73 runs in a match against the Delhi Capitals. In this season, Prasidh Krishna put on a great show for Gujarat Titans. For recording 25 dismissals, the Purple Cap recognized him as the leader in wicket taking, thanks to his constant fast and accurate performance. The 24 wickets taken by CSK's Noor Ahmad were a main highlight for the team, thanks to his left-arm wrist spin. RCB's first championship win was made possible partly because Josh Hazlewood was accurate as a bowler during the IPL finals and playoffs, helping his team with 22 wickets. Bumrah bowled very efficiently, taking 18 wickets at only 6.67 runs a piece. Sports fans recognized that his role was much greater than simply putting up statistics. The way Marcus Stoinis performed with both bat and ball played an important role for Punjab Kings (PBKS). Thanks to his skills as an Impact Player, the team found a good balance and managed to go to the final.

Gavaskar On 'Heartbreaking' Bengaluru Stampede: 'If RCB Won The Trophy In...'

Last Updated: Sunil Gavaskar expressed heartbreak over the Bengaluru stampede, saying that such 'outpouring of emotion' was understandable because RCB fans had to wait 18 years for the title. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has commented and tried to make sense of the tragic Bengaluru stampede last week, which took the lives of 11 people and left several others injured during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)'s celebration of their IPL 2025 title. Gavaskar, in his column for Mid-Day, said it was 'heartbreaking' to see people lose their lives just to get a glimpse of their heroes. He said it was 'understandable' for the fans' joy to be boundless after an 18-year-long wait to see their favorite team lift the trophy, adding that it was now 'futile' to blame anyone for it. 'The loss of lives due to a stampede outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium is heartbreaking indeed," Gavaskar wrote. 'All that those people wanted was a glimpse of the players who had given them so much joy and happiness over the years, especially in the last two months. The IPL Trophy, which they kept hoping would be theirs every year but never did, was finally coming to them after a wait of 18 years. It was totally understandable for their joy to know no bounds and they wanted to show it to their heroes… For some to have been crushed to death and many still injured and in hospital was truly a tragic turn of events. There is no point blaming anyone. That's futile as the lives can't be brought back and some injuries may never heal properly, especially the mental ones." Gavaskar went on to boldly claim that such a tragedy might never have happened had RCB won the title in the first few years of the tournament, which, he thinks, would have prevented such 'outpouring of emotion'. 'If RCB had won the Trophy in the first few years, there would not have been this outpouring of emotion as happened after the long wait of 18 years. Other teams have won but their celebrations have been a lot less frenetic maybe because their fans didn't have to wait this long. The slogan 'Ee saala cup naamde' seemed to be like a millstone around the necks of the team. This year, when that slogan was barely heard, the team played some superb cricket, most of it away from their fans. They won every single game they played away, which is a new record in the IPL. No wonder the home fans wanted to give them a special ovation. Heartfelt condolences to those who lost their loved ones," he added. "I Was Informed Much Later": Karnataka Chief Minister On Bengaluru Stampede

New Delhi: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Sunday distanced himself from the stampede incident outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL win celebrations on June 4, blaming top police officials for the failed security arrangements. According to Mr Siddaramaiah, he was informed about the stampede much later. The Chief Minister also clarified that the government did not organise the event. "It was not a government-organised event at the stadium, and I had not been invited. Despite the victims being admitted to the hospital by 3:50 pm, I was informed of the incident only at 5:45 pm. The stampede should never have occurred. It is deeply saddening," Mr Siddaramaiah told the media. He said that the police department failed to share comprehensive information about security arrangements at the venue beforehand. "Five police officers have been suspended. The state intelligence chief and my political secretary have been transferred. The government is taking this case very seriously. Appropriate action is being taken. The government is not at fault, but the incident is undoubtedly distressing," the Chief Minister said, adding that they are treating the incident with "utmost seriousness". Eleven people died and many more were injured in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium last week, where a large number of people had gathered to participate in the RCB victory celebrations. Since then, Siddaramaiah has been facing a barrage of criticism, with the BJP and JD(S) members calling for his resignation. Responding to this, he said, "The government has not taken any wrong steps. Action has been taken against the guilty. So, there is no reason for embarrassment. During the Kumbh Mela in Uttar Pradesh, many died due to a bridge collapse. Did their Chief Minister resign? Did BJP or JD(S) seek their resignation?" Mr Siddaramaiah also hit back at the BJP and the JD(S), accusing them of making politically motivated allegations over the stampede incident. Also Read | "The BJP is making baseless, politically driven accusations. The government has already taken action against concerned police officials based on preliminary information related to the incident. Furthermore, as per the demand of the BJP and JD(S), a judicial inquiry has also been ordered. A disciplinary action has already been initiated against the police personnel involved," he said. "The BJP now claims that denying permission for an open bus parade was the home minister's failure, but earlier, they demanded action against the event. This shows the BJP's double standards," he added. 'Conditional permission' at Vidhan Soudha Siddaramaiah and the other leaders were present outside the Vidhan Soudha near the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where the day's victory march of fans ended and there, they had met the cricketers. According to officials, the police force deployed at the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru had warned against the idea of holding the RCB's celebrations at the grand stairs of the premises, and also raised concerns over the security challenges that would arise due to a shortage of staff at the state legislature's security wing. Despite this, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had granted conditional permission, Mr Siddaramaiah said. "It was the duty of the police to ensure that all conditions were strictly followed. This permission was specific to an event in front of the Vidhana Soudha. However, no untoward incident occurred on the Vidhana Soudha premises. The stampede took place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, where security arrangements by the police were found lacking. As a result, the concerned officers have been suspended," he said. A day after the incident, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including culpable homicide not amounting to murder, against RCB, DNA Entertainment and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). According to the state government, DNA Entertainment managed the victory celebrations, while the KSCA organised the event.
