Damask roses are boosting farmers' incomes in Kumaon hills
Almora: In the hills of Kumaon, farmers are turning to rose cultivation—particularly the prized Damask variety—not only as a lucrative addition to their traditional crops, but also as an unexpected shield against crop-raiding wildlife, especially monkeys.

What began as a small experiment has now spread across the districts of Almora, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, with more than 500 farmers embracing the bloom.
In Almora's Takula region alone, nearly 300 farmers now grow
Rosa damascena
, a variety known for its intense fragrance and medicinal properties. The plant thrives in the region's cool climate, and its petals are processed into high-demand products such as perfumes, essential oils, and rose water.
Encouraged by Takula's success, the Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP) recently introduced rose farming to Garur block in Bageshwar. In the block's Amoli village, 50 farmers now cultivate roses across two hectares, signaling the crop's growing demand in the region.
Among the new wave of growers is Manoj Giri, who was employed as a hotel employee in Delhi and returned to his native Gananath village in Takula. Today, he earns around Rs 70,000 annually from the sale of dried rose petals and rose water, and is preparing to produce rose oil—a product that sells for several lakhs per kg.
In Bhakuna village, Meena Bisht has carved out her own success story. While her husband teaches at a local school, she runs the rose farm, earning nearly Rs 1 lakh in a year from her diversified product range: dried petals, herbal teas, perfumes, and incense sticks. Her products reach buyers as far as Mumbai, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, and Chandigarh. Now, she plans to lease more land from neighbours to scale up production.

Rose cultivation
requires low investment and minimal water, yet offers high returns," said Vijay Bimola, CAP's district in-charge. The organisation not only provides technical support but also helps farmers connect with buyers. At a recent Damask Rose Festival hosted at CAP's Satellite Center in Takula, both farmers and tourists turned up in large numbers.
In Kumaon's highlands, roses are doing more than just blooming—they're rewriting the script for rural prosperity.

Piyush Jain case: Court dismisses accused application, hearing on July 4
1 2 Kanpur: Special chief judicial magistrate Kanpur Nagar Kumud Lata Tripathi on Friday dismissed the application of accused Piyush Jain and Sunil A Hirani in the much-publicised case in which the GST department had recovered approximately Rs 195 crore cash and gold bars weighing around 22 kgs. The DGGI Ahmedabad had raided perfume trader Piyush Jain's houses situated at Anandpuri Kanpur and Kannauj on December 21, 2021. The department had seized Rs 196 crore in cash and 23 kg gold from his possession. Piyush was ultimately arrested on December 27, 2021. He was bailed out after about eight months. The prosecution had made thirteen other persons accused apart from Piyush. All are currently on bail. Both accused had previously applied for the case diary and other documents as per provisions of the Cr PC which was strongly opposed by the prosecution. According to Ambrish Tandon, special prosecutor for DGGI Ahmedabad, the accused applicants pressed their demand on last date while he submitted that CD/DVD containing 479 to 11,455 pages of the charge sheet had already been provided to the counsel of Sunil A Hirani and the same had also been provided to Piyush Jain on October 20, 2023. Therefore, the court should dismiss the application of Hirani and Piyush Jain. The court, which had reserved its order on the previous date, delivered the verdict and dismissed the accused applicants' plea. The magistrate in her order observed that since all documents had already been delivered by the prosecution to the accused, there was no reason to deliver them again. The application was viewed as a tactic to delay the trial and thus was dismissed. The next date was fixed as July 4 for hearing. Tandon informed that the prosecution would now present its evidence. Lawyer bail plea rejected in 2.6cr cheating case
Mumbai: Observing that if this court exercises discretion in favour of applicant it will give a wrong message to society, a sessions court on Monday rejected the bail plea of advocate Vinaykumar Khatu, who is accused of defrauding a Delhi-based 74-year-old woman, a client, of Rs 2.57 crore by allegedly presenting her with forged orders purportedly issued by Bombay high court. "This court cannot ignore the antecedent of applicant. Admittedly, two offences were registered against applicant for misrepresenting himself as an IAS officer. If this court exercises discretion in favour of applicant, it will give a wrong message to society. The seriousness of allegations and antecedent of applicant prevent me from exercising discretion in favour of applicant," sessions judge VG Raghuwanshi said. The judge also said that if one decides to rely on WhatsApp chat then he cannot ignore that accused had stated about stay granted by honourable high court in his chat with the accountant and it is also clear that huge amounts were transferred to the accounts of his friends, associates and him after the date of fabricated orders. Following Khatu's advice, she filed a second appeal in Bombay high court, with applications for condonation of a four-year delay and a stay order. Denying the allegations, the accused said that he was arrested on Oct 19, 2024. "Nothing needs to be seized from him. There is no possibility of tampering evidence," the lawyer submitted. Cabinet nod to Rs 1,113cr biotechnology devpt scheme
1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: The state cabinet, under the chairmanship of chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi, on Friday approved a comprehensive five-year biotechnology development scheme with an outlay of Rs 1,113.50 crore. The programme will be implemented from 2025-26 to 2029-30. The 'Development of Biotechnology' initiative, comprising 17 sub-schemes, aims to transform Odisha into a knowledge-driven bio-economy by leveraging the state's rich biodiversity and existing research infrastructure. "This scheme will create a robust ecosystem for innovation, incubation and investment in the biotechnology sector," a govt statement said. The programme aligns with the state's Industrial Policy Resolution (IPR) 2022, which identifies biotechnology as a thrust sector.
