Cardiff Devils re-sign forward Olischefski

Yahoo13-05-2025

Cardiff Devils have re-signed forward Kohen Olischefski for the 2025-26 campaign.
The 27-year-old Canadian scored 18 goals in all competitions after arriving in the Welsh capital last season.
Olischefski joined Cardiff after one season playing for Dusseldorf in the top flight of German ice hockey, having previously played for Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League (AHL), the top affiliate of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres.
Devils head coach Paul Thompson said: "I'm delighted Kohen has signed another contract with us for the coming season.
"Watching him, I like the fact he can play in all forward positions."
Olischefski is the first player to commit to another year with the Welsh club since Thompson was appointed to succeed Pete Russell who left the club in April.
The Devils had already signed up two players to their roster last month, with Joey Martin returning for a 10th season and last season's top scorer Josh McDonald the first to commit for 2025-26.
Local hero Myers leaves Devils for fourth time

London Pulse top Netball Super League as Geva Mentor bows out

London Pulse topped the Netball Super League regular season table thanks to victory away at LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons. Pulse were comfortable winners in the Welsh capital, ensuring they finished in first place ahead of Loughborough Lightning who were beaten away at Birmingham Panthers. Advertisement Manchester Thunder warmed up for their minor semi-final against London Mavericks with a win over the same opponents at OVO Arena, while Nottingham Forest finished their inaugural season with a triumph over NIC Leeds Rhinos, as netball legend Geva Mentor bowed out from the elite game. Pulse seal top spot London Pulse sealed top spot in the Netball Super League regular season with a comfortable 67-44 win over LexisNexis Cardiff Dragons. Pulse led from the front in the Welsh capital and never let their opponents get within touching distance after the first quarter, pushing out to a 16-goal lead at the break thanks to a 19-7 second quarter. Advertisement Dragons continued to push hard to get back into the contest, and took the third quarter by two, but it was not enough despite the efforts of Jacqui Newton, who took four rebounds, four gains and two intercepts. At the other end, Funmi Fadoju once again shone with seven gains for Pulse as they prepared for Friday's major final against Loughborough Lightning in good form. Thunder take down Mavericks Manchester Thunder beat London Mavericks 67-45 at the OVO Arena, ahead of the sides' minor semi-final on Friday. The two clubs will meet again in a winner-takes-all clash in Manchester, and Karen Greig's side landed the first blow in London to end the regular season in style. Advertisement Elmere van der Berg top-scored for Thunder, with the South African picking up strong connections with the returning Paige Reed and Lois Pearson. 'It was a really tough game,' said Van der Berg. 'We still didn't give our best that we can put out our best on court, but I am glad we could grind through and take the win.' Pearson was making her first appearance of the season after returning from injury, while Mavericks welcomed George Inger back to the Netball Super League after a lengthy lay-off and a four-year spell in New Zealand. A youthful Mavericks side also gave a debut to goalkeeper Neve Wright, while NXT Gen player Cerys Finn started in the defensive circle and Camilla Buchanan believes there is more to come from her side next week. Advertisement She said: 'The debuts that we managed to get out there were brilliant. There were moments we really stuck to task, our first and second phase defence was really strong. We slowed Thunder down. 'It will be a different game next week, the score at this point is irrelevant.' Panthers end on a high Birmingham Panthers closed out their inaugural season with a 67-58 victory over semi-finalists Loughborough Lightning. Lightning will face London Pulse in the major semi-final next Friday, but their preparations were dealt a blow as they were beaten by an in-form Panthers side at the Utilita Arena. NXT Gen player Antonia Mitchell top-scored in the circle with 42 goals, as Panthers' shooting success rate ultimately proved key. Michelle Magee and Jasmine Brown shone in the circle as Panthers pulled clear in the second quarter and held onto their lead to give departing head coach Jo Trip a winning send off. Advertisement Magee earned four gains and three rebounds, while Brown produced three gains, two intercepts and five rebounds in a stellar defensive display. Rhinos can't cut Forest down Nottingham Forest ended their first-ever campaign with a come-from-behind 80-61 win over NIC Leeds Rhinos in the final round of the regular season. The result sees Forest finish fifth in the table while Rhinos end the campaign in seventh. The side from West Yorkshire ended the first quarter leading 18-13 with Joyce Mvula looking good early on in the circle. But the home side fought back brilliantly during the second quarter through some fine finishing from Rolene Streutker. Advertisement Forest where then able to create a sizable buffer during the next two quarters as they capped off what ultimately proved a comfortable victory. Streutker was the top scorer for Forest with 35 goals and their win can largely be attributed down to their dominance in the Soft & Gentle Super Shot department, outscoring Rhinos 18-8. It was also Geva Mentor's last-ever game of netball before her retirement. The 40-year-old called an end to her illustrious career, which includes a Commonwealth Games gold medal, a Netball World Cup silver medal and two Netball Super League titles in 2006 and 2007 with Team Bath, after over two decades on court. Father-son duos and the U.S. men's team: World Cups, Hall of Fame legacies, and a future coach?

The U.S. men's national soccer team has its own storied history of father-son duos. The last names may not be as recognizable as Griffey, Bonds, or Manning -- but these duos have impacted soccer in the U.S. since the first-ever World Cup was held. So to honor Father's Day, we're celebrating those great fathers and sons throughout the history of the U.S. men's program, both at the player and coach level. Gregg and Sebastian Berhalter The newest father-son duo to join the list and the only one that features a USMNT player-turned-manager. Gregg was part of three World Cup squads — two as a player (2002, 2006) and one as the team's manager in 2022. In a Bay Area connection, Sebastian's first competitive cap came in the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup match against Trinidad & Tobago on June 15, 2025 in San Jose. Gregg's competitive debut came in the same tournament against Cuba on Feb. 1, 1998 in nearby Oakland. Bob and Michael Bradley While Bob never played for the USMNT, he left his mark as its coach at the 2010 World Cup. That squad included Michael, a key player on the run to the Round of 16 in South Africa. Now following in his father's managerial footsteps, Michael was named coach at MLS reserve side New York Red Bulls II last week. Might we even see the first father-son duo to coach the USMNT a few years down the line? James Brown and George Brown The earliest USMNT father-son duo has its roots in the team's nascent days, including the squad that played at first ever World Cup in 1930. James, a Scotland native, scored at the inaugural edition in Uruguay and later became one of soccer's pioneers in the United States. His son George had just one USMNT appearance (against Mexico in 1970) but was also a key figure in developing the game. The Browns are inducted in the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Phillip and Joe Gyau The Gyaus are actually three generations of international players (Phillip's father Joseph 'Nana' Gyau played for Ghana in the 1960s). That lineage allowed Phillip to represent the USMNT from 1989-91 – he later played and coached the U.S. Beach Soccer team for several years. Phillip's son, Joe, last played for the USMNT in 2019 and also had stints at several German clubs, including Borussia Dortmund. Harry and Ty Keough The Keoughs have a soccer story that revolves around both the World Cup and the Olympics. Harry was a member of the famed 1950 World Cup squad that upset England, and then captained the USA Olympic teams in 1952 and 1956. Ty was seemingly Olympic-bound in 1980 before the U.S. boycotted the Moscow Games. He did have eight appearances overall for the U.S. men's national team. Joe and Alain Maca Joe, a Belgium native, was also part of the 1950 World Cup squad that shocked England. A fruitful career in the NASL made him a National Hall of Fame inductee in 1976. Alain made five appearances for the U.S. men's national team between 1973-1975, before turning to a career that literally took off. He worked for KLM Airlines and was the president of one of the terminals at JFK Airport. Claudio and Gio Reyna Not only is the resemblance between Gio Reyna and his father Claudio uncanny, but their playing careers have also mirrored each other. Like Gio, Claudio started his club career in Germany, and they both play in the central midfield, though Gio (6'1") has a four-inch advantage on his pops (5'9"). Where Claudio has an advantage is his number of World Cup appearances. Claudio played in four World Cups with the United States before retiring after the 2006 edition. He has 112 caps to Gio's 30, but Gio only needs two goals to equal his dad's total. Tim and Taylor Twellman Taylor might be the more famous of the Twellmans due to his successful international and club career, but Taylor's dad Tim also made a single appearance for the U.S. men's national team in 1982. In fact, Tim's dad and two of his uncles — Mike and Steve Twellman — played professionally. Taylor's career has since taken him from the pitch to the broadcast booth.
