Ballybrophy becomes second 'Age Friendly' train station in Ireland
Ballybrophy train station in Co Laois has become the second train station in the country to be awarded Age Friendly status.
The station underwent a comprehensive World Health Organization four-stage process to secure its Age Friendly status.
The process included a walkability study, examining station areas and roadways.
Accessible toilets, age-friendly car parking spaces and wheelchair accessible spaces are some of the improvements that were made.
The initiative was led by Age Friendly Ireland in collaboration with the Laois Age Friendly Programme, Laois County Council and Iarnród Éireann.
Ballybrophy Train Station now joins Kilkenny's MacDonagh Train Station and a growing number of public services and buildings across the country that have gone through the process.
"Making public transport more accessible and age-friendly is part of the toolkit to ensure older people can age well and remain connected and integrated in their communities," said Minister for Older People Kieran O'Donnell.
Iarnród Éireann said it wants all 146 train stations across the country to attain Age Friendly status.
"Our vision for rail in Ireland is to be the backbone of an integrated, sustainable, and accessible public transport network, connecting and serving all of Ireland's communities," said Chief Executive of Iarnród Éireann Jim Meade.
"Today, with the recognition of Ballybrophy as an Age Friendly Station, we're delighted to launch of the first phase of our Age Friendly Stations Initiative - an initiative which ultimately intends for each of our 146 stations to attain Age Friendly Status," he said.
"We're investing in infrastructure upgrades across the network to enhance accessibility and facilitate safe, independent access for more of our customers, while also providing our staff with Accessibility and Disability Awareness training," Mr Meade added.
Initiatives like these are helping us to provide a better, more inclusive service to customers," he said.
Other stations including Dublin's Heuston, Kildare, Limerick Colbert, Tullamore, Carrick-on-Shannon, Dalkey, Wicklow, Carlow, Killarney are going through the audit and reporting phases to attain the Age Friendly status.

Cork commuter rail services suspended for weekend upgrades
Rail services on the busy Cork commuter routes to Cobh and Midleton will be suspended this weekend to facilitate upgrades designed to treble capacity on the routes. All rail services from the city to Cobh and to Midleton on Saturday and Sunday will be cancelled, with limited bus transfers operating instead. The bus transfer service, running to a revised timetable, will operate between Cork and Cobh, and Cork and Midleton, across the weekend, with direct bus transfers between Cork and Fota during Fota Wildlife Park's opening hours of 9am to 6pm on both days. Customers are advised to check times before travel at or on the Iarnród Éireann app. Iarnród Éireann is shutting down the city's commuter rail services for the weekend so that it can carry out major upgrades on the routes as part of the Cork Area Commuter Rail investment programme. Engineers will complete signalling works as part of the investment, which seeks to treble the capacity of the commuter rail network. They will also work on track renewal to facilitate the twin-tracking of the line between Glounthaune and Midleton. The Cork Area Commuter Rail Programme is a series of interrelated projects that will ultimately enable train services every 10 minutes across the Cork rail network. It is funded by the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility and the National Transport Authority. The recently opened Platform 6 at Kent Station, together with the Glounthaune-to-Midleton twin-track project and Cork area signalling and communications upgrades – both set for completion in 2026 – will deliver the network capacity to support 10-minute frequencies on each of Cork's three commuter lines, to Cobh, Midleton, and Mallow. The upgraded commuter rail network also includes proposals for several new stations, including at Blackpool and Monard, as outlined in the 2010 Cork Metropolitan Area Transport Strategy (CMATS). Disruption to rail services on busy bank holiday weekends ‘must be reviewed'
Social Democrats TD Jennifer Whitmore has called on Iarnród Éireann to take major public events into account when scheduling essential works. 'The May Bank Holiday Weekend saw major disruption to south Dublin and Wicklow services, causing major inconvenience for those attending the Leinster game in the Aviva and the Bray Jazz Festival,' Deputy Whitmore, who is the party's transport spokesperson, said. 'Irish Rail has now announced there will be no train services between Connolly Station and Dún Laoghaire for the duration of the June Bank Holiday weekend due to engineering works. 'This will directly impact thousands of participants in the VHI Women's Mini Marathon, which takes place on Sunday, June 1. 'This pattern of poor planning by Irish Rail is undermining local tourism during busy holiday weekends, as well as important community and charity events. 'It is not acceptable to see this ongoing disruption at times when there is peak demand for public transport. 'No one takes issue with the need for the line to be closed for essential works. "However, I am calling on the Minister for Transport and Irish Rail to review the planning process and ensure that future works are scheduled with public convenience and major events in mind. 'Irish Rail's tendency to curtail Dart and commuter services on bank holiday weekends to facilitate works on the line urgently needs to be reviewed.' A spokesperson from Irish Rail said 'maintaining a safe railway is our number one priority'. ADVERTISEMENT 'Every night, right across our network, we carry out essential maintenance to our track and signaling systems. 'In the most part, we cannot start work until after midnight and we must be clear of the track by 5.30am to allow for first services. 'That is not a lot of time, so we utilise bank holiday weekends from time to time to undertake more extensive maintenance and renewal works. 'For example, on the southside last weekend, we carried out track renewal, bridge upgrade, overhead line renewal and maintenance, Woodbrook Station and NTCC systems works at multiple sites from Grand Canal Dock to Wicklow. 'Traditionally bank holiday Saturday, Sundays and Mondays are quieter for us, particularly in the Dart area, as there are less people travelling for appointments, work or education. 'Whilst we acknowledge that not everyone is off at a bank holiday weekend, it is quieter than other weekends. 'We would not do this type of work on a normal working/school day. Dublin Bus and Go Ahead do honour rail tickets during these periods of essential works.'

Going to the rugby? The Dart line will be closed between Grand Canal Dock and Wicklow this weekend
THE DART WON'T run between Grand Canal Dock and Wicklow this weekend as part of pared-back public transport services over the Bank Holiday. They will however operate between Malahide/Howth and Grand Canal Dock. Supporters attending the Leinster v Northampton rugby match on Saturday from the Northside will have to get off at Grand Canal. Those coming from the Southside will have to find alternative transport to the Aviva Stadium. Rail tickets are valid on Dublin Bus and GoAhead services to and from areas affected. The closed tracks will allow for works such as track renewal, bridge upgrades, overhead line renewal and other maintenance. Advertisement For those going to Rosslare, there will be bus transfers between Dublin Connolly and Wicklow. Irish Rail also reminded passengers that DART and Commuter services will operate on a Sunday schedule on Monday, 5 May. Cork On Saturday and Sunday, there will be works carried out on the Cork Tunnel. Bus transfers will be put on for Cork to Mallow Commuter services and Cork to Dublin Intercity services to facilitate the works. The revised timetable can be found on or the Iarnród Éireann app. Iarnród Éireann apologised for the inconvenience caused. Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone...
