Wellington Tuesday previews: Awesome foursome looms for Bob Slack-Smith's galloper Cumboogle

Wellington Tuesday previews: Awesome foursome looms for Bob Slack-Smith's galloper Cumboogle

News.com.au12-05-2025

One of the Central West's most in-form horses can chalk up another win for one of the region's most famous and longstanding industry figures when racing comes to Wellington on Tuesday.
The Brett Thompson -trained Cumboogle is aiming for his eighth career win today and what would be his fourth in a row this preparation.
Cumboogle is owned by Dr Bob Slack-Smith who earned his respect and reputation as a 'studmaster' in the now by-gone era when they existed.
One look at Cumboogle's own heritage is like looking back in time to when Slack-Smith's Lucernvale Stud at Dubbo was a popular location for broodmare owners eager to tap into the Stud's prolific bread and better resident sires, Vain Karioi and Pacific Prince.
They, by the way, are the respective sires of Cumboogle's third and fourth dams.

Cumboogle's winning stretch is a far cry from his debut at Dubbo in May 2022, when beaten 15 lengths.
Even so, Thompson knew he was better than that.
'He used to be a horse that we always knew could gallop but he used to over-do and was going too hard when you didn't want him to be and not finishing his races off fully because he wasn't breathing properly through the run,'' the Gulgong based trainer explained.
'We said from day one when he was a two-year-old, I told Bob that he had a nice horse but he just didn't want to relax and for some reason, with a five or six weeks spell, he just went out and decided to come back a different horse.''
Fast forward to the present and Cumboogle's hat-trick were emphatic in nature with a combined winning margin in excess of five-lengths and a very slick sub 57-seconds at Quirindi two weeks ago.

Cumboogle's mission on Tuesday is the Wellington Soldiers Memorial Club Benchmark 66 Handicap (1100m) with a 61kg steadier after the claim for apprentice Zoe Hunt.
'He's been really running through the line and that's why we are looking forward to getting out to the 1100m (on Tuesday),'' Thompson says.
'I am sure he will run 1200m this prep so I think the 1100m will really suit him.
'He can carry weight. You saw what he carried the other day at Quirindi, he won with 63 kilos.''
Thompson has a strong hand to play at Tuesday's Wellington meeting, notably with the lightly-raced and reliable mare The Git Up, who will have her share of admirers in the Federal Hotel Maiden Handicap (1100m).
'She was first-up the other day and it was a really, really good run,'' says Thompson.
'She just got spat out the back, there was carnage coming across from outside early in the race after the jump.
'I am not saying she would have won but she would have been very close in the finish.
'She's going really well and I expect her to run a very strong race on Tuesday.'
Interestingly, all three placegetters from The Git Up's last start will be present at Wellington, namely (the winner) Pressnell and the third placed I'm Independent who also happens to be trained at Gulgong by Thompson.
'I think she'll be very hard to beat too,'' he said.
'She has really thrived since her run the other day. She's eating well and bouncing off her head.'
Thompson meanwhile is forecasting a strong showing from stable pair Dupenny and Tropicana's Cube when they face off in the Grand Hotel Country Boosted Benchmark 58 Handicap (1400m).

Trainer Mack Griffith is prepared to play the long game with the exciting – and hulking – galloper Pressnell who is off to Wellington on Tuesday to enhance both his bank balance and reputation.
While the prizemoney is always welcome, Griffith, is just as eager to add some seasoning and racecraft to Pressnell's box of tricks as his career only begins to take shape.
The gelding, who is named in honour of living legend Max Presnell, resumed at Dubbo nine-days ago, running right up to his Winx-like odds to win by three lengths.
'He has got plenty of ability but he still doesn't know what it is all about so we don't want to throw him in the deep-end too quickly and lose the plot,'' Griffith said.
'We just want to take him steady for now and put him in the easiest possible races so he can learn while he is winning hopefully.'
Pressnell will carry 59kg in the KFC Wellington Class 1 Handicap (1100m) on Tuesday.
'He is weighted up to his best for a horse that is coming out of maiden company but he has drawn well whereas a lot of the chances have drawn wide so that brings him right into the race,'' Griffith said.
'It's his first go past 1000m but Wellington will suit his style of racing.'
Pressnell has been ridden twice by Aaron Bullock and once by Nick Heywood in his career total of three starts.
He will have another of Australia's most reliable riders on board this time with Chad Lever gladly taking up Griffith's offer.
'We went for a more experienced jockey, because like I say, the horse is still very green and he'll need a bit of help and you don't lose anything with Chad on a horse that's for sure,'' the recent Wagga Town Plate -winning trainer said.
Griffith, who will be at Scone on Friday with said Town Plate winner Compelling Truth, is forecasting a better effort at Wellington from the well-bred Crown Legend in the OTL Over The Line Class 1 & Maiden Plate (1700m).
'It was a really wet track the other day and he just didn't handle it at all,'' Griffith explained.
'As soon as it was time to quicken at the end, his legs went everywhere.
'On a drier surface on Tuesday, I am hoping for a much improved run.'

Australia's Liam Adcock wins men's long jump at Rome Diamond League meet

Australia's Liam Adcock has claimed victory in the men's long jump at the prestigious Rome Diamond League meet. Sitting in third place after five rounds, Adcock leapt a personal best of 8.34 metres with his final attempt. He finished ahead of Italy's Mattia Furlani (8.13m) and Greece's two-time Olympic champion Miltiádis Tentóglou (8.1m). Adcock won bronze behind Furlani at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Nanjing three months ago. "I reckon I have a bit of clutch factor so it was great to be able to express that and jump a PB," said Adcock, who finished second at April's Diamond League leg in Xiamen. "I wasn't feeling that great leading into it, but Furlani got the crowd fired up, obviously a home crowd for him, and it got me going too." Fellow Australians Sarah Billings and Abbey Caldwell also impressed in Rome. The middle-distance duo both registered career-best times in the women's 1,500m, with Billings taking second in 3:59.24 followed by Caldwell in third (3:59.32). Ireland's Sarah Healy won in 3:49.17. "I wanted to be in striking distance in the last lap tonight. I felt really good with 200 metres to go and just told myself to go for it," Billings said. National record holder Oliver Hoare qualified for Tokyo's World Championships in September, clocking 3:31.15 in the men's 1,500m to finish ninth. France's Azeddine Habz was victorious via a time of 3:29.72. AAP/ABC

Socceroos midfielder Connor Metcalfe expecting plenty of mind games from Saudi Arabia

Socceroos midfielder Connor Metcalfe is ready to run the full gamut of gamesmanship from Saudi Arabia and weather the elements as their rivals look to thwart Australia's World Cup qualification hopes. Only a five-goal thrashing by Saudi Arabia in Jeddah on Wednesday morning Perth-time would see Australia denied direct qualification to the 2026 event in North America. Given the Saudis have scored just six times in nine games and Australia have only conceded four in their past seven, the scoreline they seek is a long-shot. But Metcalfe is expecting mind games aplenty from the hosts. Australia have been left frustrated and antangonised previously by Asian underdogs, who have been known to time-waste, feign injury and get under the skin of the Socceroos. Metcalfe, who started in the 1-0 win over Japan, said they were wary the mental warfare might start before a ball is even kicked. 'I'm expecting delays at the airport, I'm expecting a really bad pitch to train on, expecting bus delays before the game,' he said. 'They're probably just going to throw everything at us because they know what we need to do. 'I think we're going to have to play a little bit of their game as well, waste time and delay the game as much as we can, because it's going to be like that; there's going to be a lot of diving, a lot of acting.' The heat is also going to pose problems, with a top of 36 degrees predicted for the day of the game and Metcalfe hopes Australia's 10-day training camp in Abu Dhabi prior to the Japan game will help in that regard. 'It's probably going to be close to 40 degrees, with 50,000 fans screaming, so it's going to be difficult, but I think we're all mentally prepared for it,' he said. 'It honestly is horrible playing in that heat. I'm going to be honest. 'Especially when you're up against these teams that are used to it, I don't even know if they feel it. It's just another little factor that makes it that one per cent harder.' Metcalfe said the Socceroos would need to show togetherness to overcome what the Saudis throw at them. 'You can't get affected by any of it, because if you get affected by any of their little games or noise, or whatever it is, then it's just going to affect the game, and they're gonna get that little advantage over you,' he said. 'The mentality comes from being together, beuing as one, being as strong as you can and go as hard as you can for as long as you can.'

Ray Thomas' horse racing tips for Saturday, June 7, 2025

Don't miss out on the headlines from Opinion. Followed categories will be added to My News. Joliestar, the outstanding sprinter, can secure the third Group 1 win of her career in the $1 million Kingsford Smith Cup (1300m) at Eagle Farm today. The Chris Waller-trained and James McDonald-ridden Joliestar will appreciate the drying track conditions with Eagle Farm bordering on a good 4. If Joliestar ($2.30 favourite) is successful, she will provide Waller with his 19th Group 1 winner of the season – a new Australian record for a trainer. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! McDonald has an outstanding book of seven rides at Eagle Farm including Belle Detelle in the Group 1 $1 million Queensland Derby (2400m) and Movin Out in the Group 1 $700,000 Queensland Oaks (2200m), both for the Waller stable. The champion jockey also links with Godolphin trainer James Cummings on exciting sprinter Pisanello ($4.60 favourite) in the Listed $160,000 Lightning Handicap (1000m). In Flight, who ran second to Pisanello at Canterbury before winning a stakes race last start, is chasing another feature race success in the Listed $200,000 Bob Charley Stakes (1100m) at Royal Randwick. The Joe Pride-trained In Flight is renowned as a superior wet-tracker and the heavy 8 Randwick track rating is ideal for the $3.40 favourite. There has also been a significant betting move for promising two-year-old Hidden Motive in the Randwick opener, the Precise Air Handicap (1100m). Hidden Motive has been heavily backed with Ladbrokes, firming from $2.60 to $2.45 with some big bets of $2,000 at $2.60, $2000 at $2.50 and $1379 at $2.45. • EXPERT TIPS: Professional punter James Molony's race-by-race tips and analysis for Royal Randwick on Saturday ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ROYAL RANDWICK Weather: Cool, mostly sunny day and a forecast top temperature of 19c. Track: Heavy (8). Rail: True. EAGLE FARM Weather: Warm, sunny day with light winds and a forecast top temperature of 25c. Track: Soft (5). Rail: 2m out. FLEMINGTON Weather: Cold, cloudy day with a high chance of showers and a forecast top temperature of 15c. Track: Soft (5). Rail: 8m out. MORPHETTVILLE Weather: Cold, cloudy and windy day with the high chance of showers and a forecast top temperature of 16c. Track: Soft (6). Rail: 8m out from 1000m to the winning post. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ BE WARY: Royal Randwick is rated a heavy 8 with some chance of an upgrade today. The rail is back in the true position after being out 10m two weeks ago when Randwick was extremely heavy. Eagle Farm's final five races were washed out last week when heavy rain swept the course but, remarkably, the track has improved this week and is officially a soft is a likelihood the track will be upgraded to a good 4 during Super Saturday which boasts three Group 1 races. Flemington is also a soft 5 but showers are forecast today and the rail is out 8m. • LAURIE'S LONGSHOTS: Laurie Sainsbury's best value bets for Saturday, including $34 import ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ ROYAL RANDWICK TIPS BEST BET: Race 1 No.1 HIDDEN MOTIVE came off minor placings in strong two-year-old form races – including a close second to Aerodrome – with a dominant win at Hawkesbury last start. Hidden Motive settled on speed but was kept under a tight hold before he cruised to the front at the 300m and raced away to win by nearly four lengths. His winning margin could have been doubled if his rider put the colt under more pressure. Promising two-year-old who handled soft 7 conditions well last start, he is drawn to get all the favours and should be too good for his rivals. THE NEXT BEST: Race 7 No.9 COOL JAKEY is very effective on wet tracks and has raced very consistently over an extended campaign including his wins at Warwick Farm and the Hawkesbury stand-alone before he stepped out to 1600m for the first time when a game second to Hollywood Hero on this track two weeks ago. The track conditions were extremely heavy that day and Cool Jakey fought hard to the line. He drops to 5.5kg to 52kg after the claim, looks likely to get complete control in front and will be very hard to run down. VALUE BET: Race 2 No.10 CONVERGENT is a rising five-year-old who only made his debut on Anzac Day where he settled a clear last in a small field, went wide on the turn, and reeled in his rivals to score an impressive win. He has had a barrier trial between runs but has been kept fresh for this 1500m race. Emerging stayer and although he is eligible for easier races, he's good each way value at $12. THE WHISPER: Race 8 No.4 IN FLIGHT broke through for a deserved stakes win in Brisbane last start but trainer Joe Pride has brought the mare back to Sydney specifically for the Bob Charley Stakes. She's effective on all types of going but particularly heavy tracks where she has won four of her six attempts. Class mare and nicely weighted just 2kg over the limit. She can win again. • RAY & DUFF: Tips, race-by-race analysis for Randwick on Saturday PLUS tips and Eagle Farm's three Group 1s ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ EAGLE FARM TIPS BEST BET: Race 2 No.2 PISANELLO is a brilliant sprinter with impressive acceleration which he demonstrated when sprinting clear of In Flight and Barber at Canterbury two starts back. The form from that race has been franked with In Flight and Barber both winning stakes races at their next starts. Trained by Godolphin's James Cummings, Pisanello went to Scone last start where he got strung up at the rear of the field in the Ortensia Stakes until well into the straight but was charging through the pack to finish a close fifth. Pisanello has to drop back to 1000m but the speed will be frenetic and the long Eagle Farm straight gives him the chance to unleash his tremendous closing speed. This will be exciting to watch. NEXT BEST: Race 10 No.6 KIN is a talented Godolphin mare improved by two runs from a spell including her closing second to In Flight in the Bright Shadow at Doomben two weeks ago. She's peaking now and did win a stakes race at Caulfield third-up last spring. The improving soft 5 conditions are ideal, James McDonald stays with the mare, she's well drawn and looks to have found her right race. VALUE BET: Race 9 No.15 EXISTENTIAL BOB is at $34 for the Queensland Derby but he's a good each way gamble. I really liked Existential Bob on the heavy track last week but the meeting was called off before the Derby. I'm going to stay with Existential Bog because he is just starting to learn what racing is all about and has struck form at the right time leading throughout to win at Wyong and Ipswich. Existential Bob makes his own luck racing on speed and he can stay. THE WHISPER: Race 7 No.10 JOLIESTAR is a dual Group 1 winner and one of the best sprinters in training. She won the Newmarket Handicap earlier this year and hasn't raced since her second in the All Aged Stakes in April but she has had a barrier trial leading into the Kingsford Smith Cup. With the scratchings, Joliestar comes into barrier 9, the improving track conditions are ideal, and she is the one to beat. • EXPERT TIPS: Graeme Carey's best bets, race-by-race tips, analysis and
