Unity in Community to honor correction officers

ELMIRA, N.Y. (WETM) – Community leaders are hosting an event this weekend to let correction officers know how grateful the community is for them.
This event is the seventh Unity in Community event. Hosted by Elmira Mayor Daniel Mandell and Dr. Stephen Coleman, the event has previously focused on law enforcement but is focusing on correction officers. Over the winter, officers went on strike for better working conditions, and many were fired for not going back to work.
'They have a dangerous job. They have to maintain the safety and security of the facility as well as maintain the safety of inmates, civilians and themselves. So, this is a way for us to let the community know that we are grateful for everything they do,' said Mayor Mandell.
The statewide 22-day strike saw over two thousand officers fired. Organizers say this event isn't just about local recognition. It is about showing support for all correction officers.
'When we talk about honoring corrections officers you talk about honoring the corrections officers that work in Elmira, but also throughout the state of New York and also those that work in corrections in Pennsylvania,' said Dr. Coleman.
Organizers say they hope those in attendance walk away with a better understanding and appreciation for correction officers.
'The dangerous job of a correction officer and the fact that they go out there every day, and sometimes they don't know what time they're going home, sometimes they get stuck over on what we call a double. Just the hard work they do and the hard job they have. I hope they get that and understand that, ' added Mayor Mandell.
The rally is on May 17th at 1 p.m. at the Empire Sports Complex in downtown Elmira. Admission is free.

15-year-old boy sitting at bus stop killed in Long Beach crash

A 15-year-old boy sitting at a bus stop was killed after being struck by a car in Long Beach. On June 11, Long Beach police responded to a crash at Palo Verde Avenue and Carson Street shortly before 3 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that a driver in an Infiniti G37 sedan was traveling westbound on Carson Street when it ran a red light at the Palo Verde Avenue intersection. The Infiniti struck a Toyota Prius that was traveling southbound on Palo Verde Avenue. The impact caused the Infiniti sedan to overturn. The car skidded onto a sidewalk and struck the 15-year-old boy who was sitting at the bus stop. The boy was rushed to the hospital where he died from his injuries. The Infiniti driver was taken to the hospital in stable condition and the Prius driver was uninjured. 'At this time, speed appears to be a factor in the collision,' police said. The 15-year-old boy's identity was not released. The fatal crash remains under investigation. Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call LBPD Detective Ashley Van Holland at 562-570-7355. Anonymous tips can be provided to L.A. Loveland police arrest street racer who fled by car and foot: ‘A dangerous problem'

DENVER (KDVR) — The Loveland Police Department reported the arrest of a street racer in a Facebook post, assuring residents that the agency is cracking down on dangerous road behaviors. The agency shared details from an incident that occurred 'a few weeks ago' that started when a traffic team saw two vehicles racing in the 3000 block of South Lincoln Avenue. Police officers initiated traffic stops, and one of the vehicles pulled off the road. Driver with suspended license clocks over 100 mph on I-70: police The second driver sped from the scene, ran a red light and turned off the vehicle's lights before crashing. The driver didn't stop there, police said, fleeing the scene on foot where he was ultimately hit with a stun gun and arrested. Police said the suspect smelled of alcohol and found that his driver's license had been revoked. 'Needless to say, the subject was placed under arrest and transported to the Larimer County Jail,' the department shared. The agency said that the community has voiced concerns about street racing, saying it has 'become a dangerous problem throughout Loveland,' and said officers completed over 8,000 traffic stops in 2024. 'The LPD is often described as not taking these types of incidents seriously, but we want to assure the community that we do and they are being worked,' the agency said. The police department also said that it sees social media posts that alert drivers to their locations while working traffic details. 'We respect the free speech communication of doing such, but please know it can be counterproductive in our efforts, especially in smaller, residential areas,' the agency said. Champaign woman to host event for gun violence, drug abuse awareness

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A Champaign woman is helping the community come together to honor gun violence and drug abuse victims. It's personal for organizer Shanna McGuire, whose brother died of drug use and her nephew was shot and killed. 'Went all out for everything'; Remembering Trooper Corey Thompsen through running She's held an event, the Hill Celebration, in their honor since 2022, but said it's especially important this year in light of recent gun violence. Two teenagers were shot near Oakwood Trace Townhomes on Sunday. Back in March 31-year-old Anthony Miller was killed in the same area. Wesley Park sits right alongside the Champaign home complex — which will be the backdrop for McGuire's event. 'There's a saying it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to come together and to combat gun violence, combat even the drug use, so coming together there's unity and power in numbers,' McGuire said. The man arrested for shooting Miller was found guilty of murder on Wednesday. This comes after he was acquitted of a 2023 murder this past summer. There are a few weeks until McGuire's event on June 28. She hopes people resonate with the stories of older community members and families who have experienced gun violence like herself.
