GUAYAQUIL : Carlo Ancelotti got off to a disappointing start as Brazil coach in today's South American World Cup qualifiers, drawing 0-0 against runners-up Ecuador, putting the Italian manager under considerable pressure.
Brazil were unable to break down Ecuador's organised defence and had few chances in the first half, the clearest coming from a Vinicius Junior attempt assisted by Gerson that was saved by goalkeeper Gonzalo Valle.
Ecuador threatened in the second half when John Yeboah attempted a through ball, but striker Nilson Angulo was caught offside.
Ancelotti's side created more chances, but failed to capitalise, with Richarlison squandering a well-placed pass from Vinicius Junior in the box and Casemiro's powerful long-range shot being saved by Valle.
The result leaves Ecuador closer to qualifying as they remain in second place with 24 points.
The top six qualify directly for next year's World Cup in the US, Mexico, and Canada.
They face ninth-placed Peru on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Brazil remain in fourth place with 22 points; they face next third-placed Paraguay, who won 2–0 against Uruguay earlier.

Brazil-born Figueiredo thrilled by reception from Malaysian fans
KUALA LUMPUR: The man from the Western Hemisphere will never forget his Malaysia debut. Joao Figueiredo scored a goal against Vietnam and was named Man of the Match in an Asian Cup qualifier at the National Stadium yesterday. The 29-year-old proved to be a life wire for Malaysia upfront with his tremendous work-rate, and sparked a 4-0 win over Vietnam in their Group F match. The Brazil-born striker, who currently plays for Turkish club, Istanbul Basakşehir, was delighted with the reception from Malaysian fans at Bukit Jalil. He described it as "unforgettable". "I'm very happy, I've dreamt of this moment for a long time, but the most important thing was not my goal, it was to win, to follow our target. Our team performance was very good, but we can improve. I'm very happy to be here, I'm very proud," said Figueiredo. "From day one, I've been warmly welcomed by everyone here. Playing in front of more than 60,000 fans at the stadium was an incredible experience. Bukit Jalil will always be in my memory. "We've only been together for two weeks, but I believe we'll grow stronger from here. This is only the first step," added Figueiredo, who helped Malaysia end a 11-year winless run against Vietnam.

Arif Aiman turns provider for 'heritage teammates'
KUALA LUMPUR: While the spotlight was on new heritage players, the Brazil-born Joao Figueiredo and Argentina-born Rodrigo Holgado, local boy Arif Aiman Hanapi shone just as much in Malaysia's sensational 4-0 victory over Vietnam in an Asian Cup qualifier last night. The nippy 23-year-old winger became an all important provider — with two assists that led to two of Harimau Malaya's goals. More than 50,000 fans at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil saw Arif set up the scoring chances for Holgado and the England-born La'Vere Corbin Ong in the second half, with maturity and skill on par with heritage or naturalised players. The energetic Arif was a constant thorn in the side of the Vietnamese defense, as he added another dimension to Malaysia's frontline. Arif's agility created space while his vision and composure in delivering the ball to his teammates make him a key player in Harimau Malaya. While Figueiredo and Holgado have added bite to the Malaysia attack, their dynamic link with Arif proves that the blend of local talent and heritage players can work well in the national team.

Soccer-Gareca steps down as Chile coach after failure to qualify for World Cup
FILE PHOTO: Soccer Football - World Cup - CONMEBOL Qualifiers - Paraguay v Chile - Estadio Defensores del Chaco, Asuncion, Paraguay - March 20, 2025, Chile coach Ricardo Gareca reacts during the match REUTERS/Cesar Olmedo/File Photo SANTIAGO, Jun 10 (Reuters) -Ricardo Gareca confirmed he has stepped down as Chile head coach after their hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup ended with a 2-0 away loss to Bolivia on Tuesday. "We made a decision, with the coaching staff (...) with the entire delegation. We told them that we want to ease the situation," said Gareca during a brief press conference after the match in El Alto, where he did not take questions. "The results never went with us, at any time. We did not produce results, Chile is in a situation that no one would have wished for." The defeat left Chile bottom of the South American table with only 10 points and two games remaining in the qualifying round. "La Roja" will miss out on the World Cup for the third time in a row, after failing to qualify for Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022 following a historic era that saw them win the Copa America in 2015 and 2016. Under Argentine manager Gareca, who was appointed in 2024, Chile only managed one win in 13 official games.
