Bronx suspect in NYPD cop assault nabbed in wild Connecticut police chase
A Bronx man suspected of assaulting an off-duty NYPD officer and a Bronx woman who was with him as he fled were arrested in Connecticut following a wild police chase that left a state trooper injured and multiple vehicles damaged.
At approximately 2:18 p.m. Wednesday, Connecticut State Police were alerted that Jonser Hernandez-Mota was traveling toward to Connecticut on Interstate 95 in a black BMW X3.
The 27-year-old suspect was wanted for assaulting and robbing a New York City police officer and participating in another strong-armed robbery earlier that day. A trooper spotted the BMW traveling the wrong way down an exit ramp in Stamford and attempted to make a traffic stop.
'The operator failed to stop and engaged Troopers in a pursuit,' Connecticut State Police said in a media release Thursday. 'During the pursuit, a State Police Cruiser and other vehicles were struck resulting in non-life-threatening injuries.'
The BMW continued to elude law enforcement before crashing into a wooded area, after which witnesses told police they saw a man and woman fleeing the vehicle on foot.
Local police pursued on foot and eventually caught Hernandez-Mota and Betsy Bermudez, also 27. They were taken into custody and booked by Connecticut State Police in Bridgeport.
Bermudez has been charged with interfering with an officer and reckless pedestrian use of a highway. She was released on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear at Stamford Superior Court on July 16.
Hernandez-Mota, meanwhile, faces 16 different charges in Connecticut, including reckless endangerment, engaging police in pursuit and operating a motor vehicle without a license. Cops also said he has 'multiple warrants in five different states, including several fully-extraditable warrants.'
Hernandez-Mota was being held on a held on a $150,000 bond and is expected to face justice after being released from a Connecticut hospital, where he's being treated for undisclosed injuries, according to the Stamford Advocate. A photo release by state troopers show the suspect conscious and shirtless in a hospital bed.
No information about the NYPD officer Hernandez-Mota is accused of robbing had been provided as of Thursday.

Cal Poly Pomona graduate released after immigration arrest in downtown L.A.
Federal authorities on Thursday released the Cal Poly Pomona graduate who was arrested during an immigration enforcement operation downtown Los Angeles earlier this week. Andrea Guadalupe Velez, who is a U.S. citizen, expressed her relief after spending the past two days in a federal detention facility. "It's been hard," Velez said. "I didn't know all this media coverage was happening and I'm just relieved that I'm outside." Velez's mother and sister recorded federal agents carrying Velez away during an immigration enforcement operation. Her family had just dropped her off at the shoe store and had barely even driven a block before the arrest began. Velez said she remembered masked men suddenly surrounding her. "It was just a day of work and everything happened so fast," Velez said. "They didn't identify themselves, so I was kind of scared. I was like 'what's going on?' ... I wasn't doing anything crazy. I was just going to follow orders, and they decided to pick me up, and that was kind of shocking." On Wednesday, Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said Velez "was arrested for assaulting an ICE enforcement officer." In the criminal complaint against Velez, a federal agent said, "he saw a woman (later identified as Velez) step into his path and extend one of her arms in an apparent effort to prevent him from apprehending the male subject he was chasing." Velez denied the claim. She added that she did not know the man and believes she was profiled. "When I was already in the car, arrested, they asked for my ID, and they were kind of questioning whether I was a U.S. citizen or not," she said. "I'm Latina, so I'm pretty sure I was probably racially profiled." CBS News Los Angeles contacted DHS for a comment on Velez's claims. They did not respond as of Thursday night.

Four and a half months after Super Bowl LIX took place at New Orleans' Caesars Superdome, police have arrested the performer responsible for a Gaza protest during Kendrick Lamar's halftime show. On Thursday (June 26), Louisiana State Police announced that they arrested 41-year-old performer Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu for 'resisting an officer' and 'disturbing the peace by interruption of a lawful assembly' during the 2025 Super Bowl. According to a press release from police superintendent Col. Robert Hughes, Nantambu 'surrendered himself through coordination with his attorney' and has been booked. He was then chased and tackled by security personnel and apprehended by New Orleans police. After he was initially arrested, Nantambu was released without charges, but was banned for life from all NFL stadiums and events. A spokesperson for the Super Bowl Halftime Show at the time said that 'no one involved with the production was aware of the individual's intent.' In a statement given to Billboard, Louisiana State Police public affairs supervisor Sgt. Katharine Stegall confirmed that the department 'assumed investigative responsibility' into Nantambu's on-field protest after he was released by New Orleans police. 'Our agency's continued investigation ensured a comprehensive review of all security protocols and actions taken, in coordination with the NFL, and other stakeholders,' she said. The NFL released their own statement following the announcement, thanking the LSP for 'its diligence and professionalism in this matter,' while maintaining its lifetime ban on Nantambu. 'We take any attempt to disrupt any part of an NFL game, including the halftime show, very seriously and are pleased this individual will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,' the statement read. In an interview with NBC News following the halftime show, Nantambu said he wanted to use his performance to 'highlight the human suffering' occurring in Gaza as a result of the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, as well as in the Sudanese civil war. During the interview, Nantambu called on President Donald Trump to 'be empathetic and compassionate to those who are suffering in Palestine' and to 'do what is right by the Palestinians … and if he can, help the Sudanese.'
