Teenage girl footballer banned by FA for asking transgender opponent 'are you a man?' demands apology after sport's bosses dropped the case
A teenage footballer who received a match ban from the FA for asking a transgender opponent 'are you a man?' has demanded an apology after the case was dropped.
Last year Cerys Vaughan, then 17, was sanctioned by a disciplinary panel for improper conduct after she made the comment while playing a friendly game in Lancashire.
Having been told the player was transgender Vaughan says she then raised the matter with the referee over concerns she had about fairness and safety.
According to The Telegraph, Vaughan admitted to asking a player who reportedly had a beard if they were a man.
Following a complaint she was charged for breaching the FA Code of Conduct, Improper Conduct and for Improper Conduct aggravated by Gender Reassignment.
The complaint was made via Kick It Out, an England-based anti-discrimination watchdog, and included a statement from the trans player and the opposing team's captain, who accused her of transphobia.
Vaughan denied the charges but was found guilty by a National Serious Case Panel and banned for six games – four of which were suspended for 12 months.
The ruling sparked fury from women's rights campaigners who protested against the Football Association's transgender inclusion policy outside Wembley in November 2024.
Vaughan appealed the verdict and in February an FA appeal board found that she had received an 'unfair' hearing, quashed the original ruling, and ordered a new process to take place.
The case has since been dropped after the complainant withdrew from the process.
Vaughan, now 18, has chosen to reveal her identity and in her first broadcast interview told BBC Sport: 'It was stressful. It's definitely impacted my normal life a lot.
'In the end it was pointless, and there was no reason for the FA to put me through all this.
'They said I wasn't guilty anymore and they dropped my charges and cleared my record.'
In a statement, the FA said: 'We can confirm that this disciplinary case has now been closed, as the complainant has chosen to withdraw from the process due to personal reasons.
'All relevant parties have been informed of this outcome and no further action will be taken.
'To protect the players involved, and to respect the confidential details included, we are not in a position to publish further details about this case.'
Vaughan has denied being transphobic.
She is currently on the assessment pathway for autism, and it is common for autistic people to struggle to express their feelings regarding gender.
After her case began, in July 2024, she said in a written statement: 'The moment the player clarified they were transgender (which I previously hadn't considered), I respected their answer fully, dropped the situation and immediately shifted my focus back to the game before seeking guidance from the referee.
'At no point was my question meant to be hurtful or malicious as I only intended to seek clarity in an unfamiliar situation.
'Knowing now that the player was transgender, I understand that there were better ways to approach this question.'

Tottenham ask Bournemouth about Antoine Semenyo then immediately stop transfer pursuit
TOTTENHAM reportedly launched an enquiry for Antoine Semenyo before immediately halting their pursuit of the Bournemouth star. New Spurs boss Thomas Frank is eager to add a dazzling attacker to his forward line this summer. 1 And Semenyo, 25, emerged as a target after Tottenham also put Brentford's Bryan Mbeumo on their shortlist. The Bees' French forward netted 20 Premier League goals last term. But despite the opportunity to reunite with Frank in north London, Mbeumo reportedly favours a £60m move to Manchester United. Semenyo then became the clear alternative after also proving himself to be a goal menace when cutting inside on his left foot. The Athletic claims Tottenham even went so far as to contact Bournemouth over a move for their Ghanaian winger, who netted 13 goals and bagged seven assists in 42 games this term. However, the Cherries have already seen their squad ravaged by big sides this summer. Dean Huijsen joined Real Madrid for £50million last month, while fellow defender Illya Zabarnyi could be off to Paris Saint-Germain for around £60m. Milos Kerkez has also agreed a £40m switch to Premier League champs Liverpool. And with forwards always carrying a premium, it's claimed that Bournemouth told Tottenham to pay £70m for Semenyo. The mind-blowing fee was immediately rebuffed Spurs, who have decided to not pursue a deal for now. They will continue to scour the market for a new right-sided forward at a better price. But should Tottenham fail to secure an alternative, they could come back for Semenyo later in the transfer window. The former Bristol City and Sunderland man still has four years to run on his Cherries contract. And Semenyo is also on the shortlist at Man United, who could move should they end up losing Mbeumo to Spurs.

Bill Belichick faces fresh humiliation after UNC emails about girlfriend Jordon Hudson, 24, are revealed
Despite Bill Belichick 's celebrated arrival at the University of North Carolina and the uproar surrounding his relationship with 24-year-old Jordon Hudson, the new Tar Heels football coach's name was continuously misspelled by school officials in internal emails. Raleigh's WRAL News published a bombshell report Friday after receiving those internal emails in response to a public records request. Much of the discussion centers on the fallout from Belichick's disastrous CBS interview, in which he and Hudson refused to discuss the origin of their widely discussed romance. However, the public records request also revealed an exchange between media relations staffer Brigitta Shouppe and senior associate vice chancellor in the Office of University Communications Beth Keith in which they discussed criticism from an alum. 'Never did I think UNC would become a laughing stock in the sports world because of his young girlfriend,' the UNC grad wrote in an email, as reported by WRAL. Shouppe responded to Keith hours later with a proposed response, albeit one that misspelled Belichick as 'Belichik' throughout. 'Thank you for reaching out, for sharing your views, and for your continued engagement and interest in Carolina,' read the proposed statement. 'Coach Belichik [sic] brings a wealth of experience in coaching and football at the highest levels. The news media has demonstrated an ongoing interest in those previous experiences and activities outside of Kenan Stadium.' Those uncovered emails also lay bare Belichick's attempts to contain negative reaction to that CBS interview, much of which centered on Hudson's role with the team. The school has since clarified that Hudson is not employed at UNC, but remains welcome in the athletic department. 'Jordon and I have both a personal & professional relationship,' Belichick wrote to Keith. 'This is not a secret... Jordon assists me with my personal media, which is why I asked UNC to forward media requests (E.G. CBS 60 Minutes) to her. 'Jordon has zero involvement in the UNC football program, beyond the degree that my personal media intersects with it.' Belichick also explained why his young girlfriend was at the interview, which was organized to promote his new book: 'The Art of Winning: Lessons from My Life in Football.' 'Jordon was present at the CBS interview because David Kass, the Simon & Schuster publicist, was not there,' Belichick claimed. 'I included Jordon in the book acknowledgments because she was a creative contributor to the book, including having the idea for formatting the 4 special pages in the book.'
