Slot takes pride in Liverpool's display after Champions League exit to PSG

The Guardian12-03-2025

While Liverpool boss Arne Slot called the team's exit from the Champions League a shock, he took solace in losing to an excellent Paris Saint‑Germain team in a wildly entertaining two-legged tie that needed a penalty shootout to decide the outcome. In what Slot labelled 'the best game of football I've ever been involved in', PSG beat Liverpool 4-1 in a shootout to advance to the quarter-finals, winning Tuesday's second leg at Anfield 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ousmane Dembélé.

Chelsea's 'next Eden Hazard' retires aged just 28 after being 'killed' by exit

Former Chelsea wonderkid Charly Musonda left Stamford Bridge in 2022 and just three years down the line, has decided to hang up his boots in an emotional announcement Ex- Chelsea starlet Charly Musonda has decided to retire at just 28 three years after leaving West London. The Belgian winger joined the Blues from Anderlecht in 2012, moving through the Blues' youth system until his eventual breakthrough. He made his first-team debut for Chelsea in 2017 and went on to make seven senior appearances for the club. Big things were expected of Musonda and he was even tipped to be the successor to club icon and compatriot Eden Hazard. But things then went downhill for Musonda in West London after loan spells with Real Betis, Celtic and Vitesse Arnhem. He eventually left the club for nothing in 2022 at the end of his contract, with Levante and Cypriot side Anorthosis Famagusta then making moves for him. But he left the latter last summer and has been without a club since. Musonda has now decided to hang up his boots despite having only 63 appearances under his belt. Speaking on the Rising Ballers podcast, he said: "I've got a big announcement today. It's not easy but it's something I've been thinking about for a long time. After reflecting on my experiences and who I am, I've realised I want to live with purpose to inspire and motivate others." Opening up on his time with Chelsea - and eventual exit - Musonda has revealed that his departure from the club was the catalyst behind his downturn in form. He added: "The exit killed me. It killed me mentally. It was the worst thing. 'I was obviously with the reserves at that time so the plan was to pick up with the reserves, get some training in and if there were a few games where I could fit in toward the back end of the season, that was the plan. "Because I literally had just gotten better. I came back in December-January and was training with the reserves. Feeling amazing, happy to be back—obviously it was a long way for me to be fully fit, but just being able to train was amazing. "The first team was doing really well. It was COVID, so the buildings were split and you wouldn't really see the first team. Then toward the back end of the season in the car park I ran into Thomas Tuchel, the manager. "They were getting ready for the semi-final of the Champions League and he just said, 'How are you feeling? How are things going?. "It was my first time meeting him. He said, 'I'm looking forward to seeing you back and I said, 'Don't worry, I'll be back for pre-season. "Because in my mind, it was always pre-season and I'd be back with the first team and we'd see from there. So I came back for pre-season and that's where things got tricky. That was the end of my time at Chelsea." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Liverpool's three-man striker shortlist as star made to wait for dream move

Liverpool are keen on adding a new striker to their squad this summer with Darwin Nunez linked with a move away and have a number of forwards in mind to add to their lucrative spend Liverpool have added Victor Osimhen to their striker shortlist with moves for Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike hitting the buffers. The Reds are keen to add a new forward to their squad this summer with Darwin Nunez 's future looking uncertain. The Uruguayan has been linked with a move to Serie A giants Napoli. And should he leave, a replacement is right at the top of Liverpool 's agenda. ‌ Despite the Premier League champions' huge outlay this summer, their PSR figures have been positive over the last few seasons, meaning that a move for a forward is not as prohibitive as first thought over the coming months. A number of strikers have already been identified as potential recruits. ‌ Eintracht Frankfurt star Ekitike is chief among those having caught the eye in Germany. But according to Sky Sport Germany, he would have to wait until later in the window to seal a move to Anfield. That is because Liverpool need to sell players first in order to put together the funds for a move. It is expected that Frankfurt will demand around £85m for the Frenchman if they are to sell, with Frankfurt chief Markus Krosche having already made clear they will not undersell their star asset. He said: 'If the price isn't right, then he'll simply stay with us. We don't have to sell Hugo.' "He's one of the most interesting strikers on the European market. Hugo has to decide that," he added at the end of the season. "I'm glad we have him. If he decides otherwise, that's our motto: If a player develops faster than us, we let him go." And in the meantime, Liverpool also have alternatives. Newcastle hitman Alexander Isak has long-term admirers at Anfield, with Magpies chiefs concerned that a big-money bid could be on the way later in the window. ‌ Which striker do you think Liverpool should sign? Share your thoughts in the comments below They have already attempted to fight off that interest by offering him a new deal that would see Isak become the highest-paid player in the history of the club. Elsewhere, Osimhen would represent a slightly more affordable option. The Nigerian appears to have little future at Napoli having spent last season on loan with Turkish giants Galatasaray. The 26-year-old still scored 37 goals in all competitions last term. Osimhen reportedly has a €75m (£63m) release clause written into his contract with parent side Napoli. Away from a new striker, Liverpool are also chasing a new centre-back. They are closing in on the signing of Crystal Palace 's Marc Guehi, with Jarell Quansah on the verge of a move to Bayer Leverkusen.
